The Daily Planet - Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

Considering how close this came out to the super girl news I can't help but wonder if they're connected. I don’t think it's a guarantee that we get Calvin Ellis, if we do great. But I expect a traditional superman.
I just wanna point out so far there's really no guarantee that Supergirl is Kara.

I know we’re already fancasting with big names, but what about an unknown Black actor? In the tradition of Christopher Reeve, an unknown sells Superman much more than a name like Michael B Jordan. Abrams is also known to cast, maybe not always unknown, but certainly not names at the time, in the leads. Chris Pine, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega etc...

I think that's why Stephan James would be a good get. He's not a household name, but he's no slouch either.

If there is one thing Abrams is good at is casting, I look forward to his Superman pick.

After Abrams made that pile of **** called Rise of Palpatine Skywalker I have zero faith in him. He'll probably just remake his favorite moments from previous superman films and string those moments together with an undercooked safe plot.

Kind of conflicted on this. I don't know if a Black Clark Kent or Calvin Ellis superman would be better...

If it's Clark Kent I just hope they don't completely change who the character is just because they're casting a black actor, like keep the core elements of who he is. I want the journalist, I want the "mild mannered" alter ego, I want the midwestern roots... that's just who Clark Kent is, and I hope those elements aren't lost in this attempt to "modernize" the character...

Superman is one of my top 3 favorite characters and I just want the essence of it to be adapted well.

Superman & Lois so far seems like a great balance of old and new, hopefully this follows suit.

Bridgerton actor Regé-Jean Page has been getting alot of buzz for Bond and Black Panther lately.

He'd be a name to consider, though, at 30 , he's on a bit of the older end than I would want to start a franchise, and he's only 5'11 as opposed to 6' or more. That's if he's playing Clark.

Black Superman is a compelling story waiting to be told (especially if they keep Lex white), but I'd be lying to say part of me wasn't upset that it's happening long before a long-list of canonically established black DC heroes.

I'm like, simultaneously annoyed about both MOS2/Cavill and WB sticking to Batman/Superman instead of branching out like Marvel has and making $1 billion blockbusters out of D list heroes.

Sounds like a great new idea and I’m glad DC are trying something new. I do think it’s interesting though to tackle race with potentially a black superman as opposed to a more recent immigrant experience like middle eastern, Latino or Asian immigrant superman.

of course there are still recent black immigrants but I assume this talk about America’s long relationship with its black community not just most recently which I think doesn’t quite gel with a new kryptonian immigrant as well as Latino or whatever but I’m sure it will be an amazing story

The guy that broke the story (and got the direct statement from JJ Abrams, Coates and Emmerich) says that it's Kal-El.

I have NO problem with a black superman, nor with a gay superman ( if they wanted that) AS long as they don't write it in way that says look at me I'm black, or look at me I'm gay.
I don't want to be preached at, I want to be entertained.

I'm just ready for Superman to get done somekind of justice within the DC Universe. I am very open to the idea of a black superman as long as they get a quality actor for the role, but it just wouldn't feel right IMO if this new iteration was anyone other than Clark Kent/Kal-El himself.

That version of the character still hasn't had a satisfying portrayl yet in the DCEU and I'm hoping they take a note from Matt Reeves The Batman and focus more on establishing and building the character up first before worrying about shared universes or any other superheroes showing up.

I will never understand WB’s fascination with this hack. This will be the third beloved IP that he’ll ruin. And, as you said, it’s Abrams...he has no originality or ability to tell a story so he’ll just end up rehashing the Donner film.

Basically do something with the character. I'm sick of him getting nothing.

Yup. The article specifically mentions Kal-El. It does look like we're getting black Clark Kent..
