I think it is now that she did...she had too many irons in the fire. Sucks...

I think the moment passed. Which is fine. Plenty of great up-and-comers.

Hooray for it being Kal-El. Good choice, as anyone else would not be *the* Superman story, and that's the fun of it. Bring it.

Depending on how "The Marvels" performs, I wouldn't mind Nia DaCosta. But Antoine Fuqua or Steve McQueen would be my dream picks.

If it’s going to be a black Clark Kent, I definitely think period piece would be the much more compelling way to go. How would folks in the 30s/40s react to a black man flying in the sky? Yeah, that’s the direction I’d go in.

I’d love to see Regina King take a crack at it. Maybe she can bring Lindelof in for some nerd credibility too.

Yeah he did Judas and the black messiah for WB right? They love to stay in house with directors they’ve worked with before so he’s probably a top candidate for this.

I don't even think you have to go that far back. You want the film to resonate with a modern audience and have a message of hope. Showing a period where segregation will continue for decades, there's no good place to end the film since by the end of it, most would not accept a black Superman. You could easily start in the 70s/80s with a young Kal-El growing up in the midwest, and eventually showing him as an adult in the 90s. This would still allow the creators to explore the societal aspects of him while also leaving room for sequels that could be set closer to today.

I would love Shaka King directing this movie. Shaka was actually my best director for Judas and the Black Messiah.

Hope to read news confirming the director and who is playing Superman soon. I think it will end up being Michael B. Jordan which I’d be overjoyed with.

This project sounds more and more compelling.

1930s/1940s period sounds better than setting it in the 1990s. The 1990s setting just isn't that interesting IMO for something like this.

As for resonating with modern audiences, that didn't stop the first Wonder Woman taking place in the 1910s.

And I hope they go with an unknown. Superman shouldn't be an established movie star as Christopher Reeve showed us. Surround him with established stars, but not for Superman himself.

And I know he's not directing, but that seems the J.J. Abrams way with finding great unknowns as the leads.

Oh, and since he was rumoured to actually be Superman back in 2000s, Will Smith as Jor-El!

I don't know. I'm not sure that another Superman movie about a Superman in total conflict with society (this time due to racism along with being an alien) is the route they should take.

If it was set that far back in time, I could also see the film showing white people coming around to black people due to the black Superman's heroics by the end. "Black Superman solved racism" or anything like that would be a very cringey message.

Regardless of anyone's personal take on Kal-El being a POC, objectively this reeks of a PR move of one by WB and honestly this will likely backfire at the box office.

Whether anyone likes it or not, changing Kal-El is going to draw a big backlash. Some racist, some who are upset by changing the source material, some who feels it's pandering, and of course the Snyderverse/Cavill fans who are insanely loyal.

There is still a large generation of people who think of the traditional Superman. It's just that way. Given his iconic status, it's going to draw backlash. Even based on the stuff I've seen online, there is a segment of the African American community that do not like this and feel it's insulting to them.

It's not a big story right now because nothing is confirmed, but simply based on the initial reactions, I cannot see this going over well, which is why I think MBJ chose to distance himself from this.

If WB is going to insist on Superman being a POC, they are much better off using a an alternate character, which even then will have it's own unique response.

That in itself is a touchy subject to, particularly in today's climate. It's just opening an ugly can of worms. The writer himself is going to be politicized by pundits due to his own controversial statements and political views.

All of this is simply a questionable route by WB and Abrams.

It's unfortunate because Superman is the one character man fans still haven't felt like has been given his due on-screen. Singer was stuck on the Donnerverse, Snyder had no real love for the character and alienated many fans and casuals, and now WB is going in this direction.

Just amazing to me how poorly WB continues handle this property. All of their decisions since SR have been extremely reactionary.

Either WB doesn't know what they're doing or they want to ride out the franchises of the successful DCEU actors (Ezra/Gal/Jason/Margot) who were cast 7 or 8 years ago at this point, while doing "Superhero teamup stuff" in the form of Black Adam and the JSA, and in the mean time do Elseworlds Batman and Superman to keep them in the public conscious. THEN start completely clean in 10 years.

IMO they should just replace Affleck, make Cavill happy or replace him too, and move on to JL2 (with a new director) via the Flash movie.
