There’s not a third option where he’s, you know, Superman?

I mean, the realistic interpretation is that a real life Superman would be Homelander. That's not up for debate. If anything, Invincible, The Boys, Dark Knight Returns, and Kill Bill are the only works to truly understand how a real life Superman would behave.

The issue with Snyder's Superman is that it's poorly written.

It's fantasy. Myths and fables on what we can and should strive towards.

It is a literal children's story for children. The entire point is the fantasy of someone having absolute power but being uncorrupted by it in a world where even the tiniest, most insignificant bit of power turns people into rabid authoritarian beasts. I also suspect a real life Superman would have a statistically high chance of being ****ed but this is entirely irrelevant because that is not what the story of Superman is about. A real life Batman would also be an absolute nightmare but there's really nothing to be gleamed from leaning into that - Oh, geez, you managed to poke holes in the concept of an inherently unreal fantasy hero designed to amuse kids in 1939? Wow you're so smart.

Lots of great drama to be mined from deconstructing Superman as a concept. Homelander is one of the best villains in any piece of superhero media, but none of those issues are really relevant to Superman himself.

If they'd given him a "Damaged" head tatoo, I'd probably also feel the push to shrug and go, "I guess it'll fit with the vision".

I still barely understand why I mostly really like a suit that if you'd described it to me all the colour would have drained from my face and I'd have started aging up some vegetables to a nice rot in order to hurl them at Gunn's face.
