I’ll go to bat that Cage as Superman really, really could have worked because he’s an incredible and deeply sincere performer who loves the character.

However, the Lives scripts were uniformly terrible. Burton had already entered his vapid hack era and all the concept art just looks like his by then already hackneyed and run into the ground visual style.

I am not super hot on or interested in this movie but it already looks more competent and visually nicer than prior modern Superman films. They all look like goofy children’s movie heroes! Superman looks like Buck Rogers with a cape! It’s great! Exactly what I’d want from Gunn on this.
Nic Cage looked as much like Superman as I look like George Clooney!

(I look closer to George Costanza)

Darkseid worked as a Superman villain in STAS because of the epic build up to his character and the personal stakes he brought, especially after he killed Dan Turpin on screen, which was not a common occurrence on kids cartoons. They kept his connection to the New Gods, they didn't change any of that.

If they adapt him for the DCU, I hope they use the Grant Morrison JL: Rock Of Ages storyline.

I have no interest in Darkseid in a Superman film.

And I’m not particularly interested in a Morrison-inspired New Gods on film.

Give me Kirby Fourth World or give me nothing.

Yeah I find Morrisons New Gods pretty mediocre. Either go all in or just stay away.

Although I won't lie...The Great Darkness Saga would be crazy to watch as a feature length cartoon done right.

My favorite takes on the New Gods have been King’s Mister Miracle and Walt Simonson’s Orion, so those are the ones I’d most want to see adapted or inspiration taken from. Kirby’s art was amazing but his writing leaves me cold. That era of comics in general just ain’t for me.

Amazing that I feel you and I share a lot of sensibilities, especially when it comes to Superman comics, but we totally diverge when it comes to the Bronze Age, which is my favorite period of comics. But I think that it primarily has to do with that being the age that I first started reading comics. I’m a Kirby guy through and through. I also feel like Tom King is a Kirby guy. I find his Mister Miracle to be a love letter to Kirby in many ways. Even to the point where Oberon is basically Kirby. He also recognizes that Kirby wrote Barda basically as an homage to his own wife, as in he put her personality into Barda. That’s why. I think, King writes Barda with such strength and tenderness as he does. He’s paying his respect to Kirby in that as well.

It’s the beauty of this forum, though. Different perspectives, agreeing more than we disagree, yet respecting when we diverge. Because we ultimately all share the same passions.

I love it.

Never knew @flickchick85 isnt a Darkseid fan.

I like him in Fourth World but…he’s not a Superman villain!

He absolutely is! Now whether people like the character or not is one thing but Darkseid is one of Superman's core villains and this is largely due to John Byrne and not STAS.

Byrne seemed to relegate Mongul (who happens to be a copy OF A copy of Darkseid) to B-villain level status and have Darkseid take his place as Superman's rightful cosmic arch villain. Timm and co. followed suit and the rest is DCAU history.

Byrne's 3 parter (Action#386, Superman#3 and AOS#426) is an amazing story arc where Darkseid uses Superman's own symbolism against him and it would make for an amazing, dark, emotionally charged Superman film if done right.

With all that being said I would rather see Brainiac, Parasite and Manchester Black go one on one with Superman before Darkseid.
Brainiac is long overdue and if one mixes some aspects of Geoff Johns's "Brainiac" arc with Millar's "red son" take on the character we could end up with something poignant. Also with all the hoopla about AI, the character can be quite topical in today's environment.
Parasite is a very underrated villain who has been downgraded to B-level henchman when (during the Bronze age) he was one of Superman's most dangerous characters.
I recommend you all check out Action#369, where Parasite targets CK instead of Superman, to see how cool Parasite can be when done right

And lastly Manchester Black who is basically the love child of Punisher and Jean Grey with Pheonix level power. The character is an anti hero that challenges Superman morally and physically and he's been in a number of good stories including Action#775, Ending battle, rebirth and Kennedy Johnson's warworld saga.

At the end of the day though, the identity of a villain matters little if Superman himself isn't done right. Give me a Superman movie where he's shown in all of his charismatic, optimistic, intelligent glory and I wouldn't even care if the opponent is a giant island made of kryptonite.......well, maybe not that.......but getting Superman right is the ultimate prize for me.
