As far as I can remember, trailers are usually attached to in-house movies.

It's very common. Paramount's M:I-8 trailer is attached to Universal's Wicked right now. The studio just has to pay more to put their trailer on a movie that's not theirs, but that's generally not a deterrent. They're more interested in hitting the crowd/demo they want.

My takeaway from Collider is that the trailer will be released online before appearing in theaters alongside Mufasa. But we shall see.

That's exactly how I interpreted it as well. It seems like we will get it the week of Dec 11th-15th, and then it gets attached to Mufasa in theaters the following week.
