I came back to this forum after years to check out the discourse around the new Superman, and unsurprisingly, people are still stuck debating Zack Snyder. Great art will always provoke discussion—this was true 10 years ago, it was true 5 years ago, and it will still be true 5 years from now. Many will claim its because Snyder’s movies were bad (subjective of-course), but we’ve seen a string of 8-9 DC films actually flop since then—like lose money flop—and they’ve had zero cultural impact, zero discourse. Snyder’s movies, for all the debates, actually made money and turned a profit. Could they have made more? Sure. But these days, DC would probably bite your arm off for a film grossing $875M.
I see people talking about "toxic" Snyder fans not supporting the new DCU, but whenever I open any DCU-related discussion, all I see is people slagging the Snyder-verse. What does that say? A lot of it comes down to fans having a fixed idea of what they want and not accepting anything that deviates from it. In 2016, people criticised Snyder because they wanted a classic Superman. Now, the shoe is on the other foot. It’s just fandom wars. It’s silly.
Every time a new DC movie is about to drop, there’s the same narrative: This time, they’ve finally got it right. There’s talk of “hope and optimism” and how the latest entry is proof of exactly where big bad Snyder went wrong. Yet, despite all this, the movies keep flopping. At what point does it stop being about “owning” Snyder fans online and start being about making films that truly connect with audiences?
Bringing this back to Superman, I can see James Gunn is under tremendous pressure. This has to be a huge hit; otherwise, the DCU goes up in flames. Considering the movie likely has a $250M+ budget(minimum), it needs to make $750M-$800M just to break even. I can't see that happening, especially since it’s sandwiched between Jurassic World and Fantastic Four. The best-case scenario I see is ~$500M-$600M with good reviews. At that point, I think Gunn might return to the MCU, and DC will probably focus entirely on Reeves’ Batman universe.
BTW nice to see some familiar faces still around, like our beloved bald bastah BN.
