Man, some real hate out there for Keira Knightley. Actresses like Weisz or Cotillard may be a step above but girls like Portman and Knightley can more than hold their own.

Unfortunately they can't. Knightly was swept under the rug in the Pirates movies after the first one because she couldn't hold her own. She became a walking archetype. Even in her good films like Never Let Me Go, she didn't add much of anything. The only preformance i think she was fine in was The Dutchess, though like i said, put her in an ensemble and the house of cards will fall.

Portman to me is much the same, I wanted to like Closer, but her performance was mannered and forced. You can blame Lucas for the mess that was the Star Wars prequels, but at least guys like Liam Neeson could still bring conviction to his hammy dialogue, unlike Portman or Christianson. As good of a filmmaker Nolan is, he often has dialogue that requires good actors to be convincing.

You know, its not entirely out of the question that Bruce is dating a different Rachel in RISES. Rachel Caspian, daughter of Judson Caspian (aka The Reaper). They served as the basis for the characters in MASK OF THE PHANTASM.

She might not be as likely a candidate as Talia, or Catwoman, but you never know...

It's true. Sorry. Portman is average, Knightley is marginal at best. I've never seen a memorable performance from either, other than Portman in Closer. I've also never seen people go out of their way to praise Keira Knightley's talent (or lack thereof). It's strange to me.

Naomi Watts and Marion Cotillard are fine actresses though. 10 years later, I still believe Naomi Watts' turn in Mulholland Dr. was one for the ages, and one of my favorite performances of the decade. Also impressive to me is the way she carried The Ring and was pitch perfect in King Kong, proving she takes her craft seriously and wants to be great, no matter the genre. And Cotillard is just a natural. She may not have a long resume, but I think she has a long career when all is said and done.

Get used to it, because the more movies she's a part of, the more criticism you're going to hear.

I guess if you guys want to settle on 2nd tier talent, fine. It's not like Natalie Portman would be a horrible addition to the cast. But when I look at that list Watts, Cotillard, and (to some extent) Weisz, really stand out and make the rest of the list look weak by comparison.

That's why I couldn't buy into it. Some American actresses can really do a very believable british accent (Piper Perabo, Angelina Jolie, for example) others just sound too forced. It takes away from the overall performance.

I don't agree, infact that could be the point. Maybe it would give Bruce pause, which the audience would detect right away, like he can't escape the name. I'm not saying its gonna happen, but I wouldn't speak in absolutes.

You don't earn those kinds of accolades - even if she ultimately didn't win any of the awards she was nominated for - if you don't have some serious acting talent, so, quite frankly, anyone who's questioning her talent is clueless.

I'm not going to pursue the defense of Natalie Portman argument anymore, as I don't think either side is going to change the other's mind, so it's just going to be an endless:

"She sucks!"
"Nuh-uh! She's great!"
"Nuh-uh!"

But I will say this. I think a lot of people's minds are going to change once Black Swan is released. I've always liked Natalie Portman, but this really seems set to be the movie that really showcases what a talented actress she truly is.

But moving onto more positive discussion...

Totally agreed. As soon as I saw her name mentioned on the shortlist, I wanted to hunt down and post on this thread that brilliant scene where she's at the audition, and plays the same scene with the same dialogue two totally different ways, transforming the meaning of the scene. For a young, relatively inexperienced actress like Naomi Watts was at the time, to utterly hold the screen so you're mesmerised and you could hear a pin drop in the cinema... impressive stuff. But alas, I couldn't find the clip anywhere on Youtube.

We are clueless are we? Most film critics agree she is wooden. In fact, Mark Kermode, Britain's most famous film critic gave her the nick-name Akia Knightly (based on the furniture store) because she is so wooden.

As far as Oscars go... you are giving credit to an organization that just awarded Sandra Bullock with a Best Actress Oscar. An orginization that gave Jennifer Hudson an oscar for being able to sing, despite the fact that she holds about as much conviction in dialogue as a newscaster. Besides, studios can certainly buy their way into a actress nomination. It is an unfortunate truth. They have a hard time rounding up actress nominations the past decade because, frankly, most of the great actress performances each year are in small independent films (Winter's Boone, Frozen River) but those aren't "names", so of course they throw is the Meryl Streeps, the Judi Dench's and the popular kids (Portmans and Knightly's).

Piper Perabo had me fooled in "Imagine me and you" and I pride myself in spotting a fake British accent a mile off damn it - if a bit too posh. Didn't even realise it was Piper til the credits rolled. Jolie, meh.
