Hugo Strange fits with the escalation theme, so does Catwoman, and even though I'm still not thrilled with the character, so does Black Mask. All three characters represent the duality theme, which has been left unexplored in Nolan's Bat-Films. Talia doesn't seem to be a natural fit like the others, but I suppose she could work very well in the hands of a director like Nolan. Personally, I'm still hoping to see Hugo Strange as the main villain, with Catwoman as the side villain and Deadshot in a minor role.

That's why I said "if at all". If he's to be watered down, then they shouldn't use him.

Nolan will use whatever Villians he wants to fit the ctory he is ognna tell. all this stuff about which villians fits based on a tone, of a movie about a guy fighting crime in a bat suit is silly. if thats the case a flying dog villians fits,cause the tone of TDK was a fictional character fighting crime a in a extrememely fictional city.

As does every villain fit with the theme of escalation. But that's not necessarily the theme of RISES. And it wasn't the theme of Begins. All they did was mention it in the last scene, setting up the next theme.

All three characters represent the duality theme, which has been left unexplored in Nolan's Bat-Films.

Overcoming your fear (like in Begins) -- That's a theme. Have my actions made matters worse or better (TDK), i.e. Escalation -- that's a theme.

Duality is not a theme. How is that an ultimate question posed by your story?

Yes, sure. But I wasn't talking about the retcon itself, merely the fact they brought back the robber. How they used him is another, irrelevant matter.

That has me confused, too. I don't even see the point of giving Gordon a new love interest. TDKR ought to be more focused on Batman.

See the whole thing with spiderman 3 and sandman really being the killer, seemed like a really random thing to bring up 2 movies later, it was like "oh by the way, it was a totally different dude..aaaaaand plot for a new movie..go." Just seemed like a really lame thing to build a movie on. It took away from two other possible stories, one that had been built up for the two preceeding movies, with the tensions with Harry, and one new threat that had a lot of wasted potential Venom.

My thing with Talia, coming back for revenge, or any other story you would want to tell with her, is that it'd be like if Harry Osbourne hadn't been in the first two spiderman films at all but then quite randomly showed up in spiderman three and was all

"Hello, my name is Harry Osbourne. You killed my father. PREPARE TO DIE!"

I agree with you on the Spiderman 3 point, but if Talia's in the story I don't think Nolan would go that route, he's just too smart of a director for that, and Jonah is too smart a writer. Talia's arc would be more about finishing what Rā's started, and with Batman's status at the end of TDK, perfect timing IMO. And you don't need Rā's for there to be a love/hate story, some of the greatest stories are when the hero falls for the villainess.

Frankly, I really hope they go for Catwoman and Black Mask if Hugo Strange is in this film as well. A hallmark of Batman films has always been the freakish, costumed villains. And after the Joker, just Talia and Hugo Strange would be too...tame and normal. Begins had the Scarecrow. TDK had the Joker. This film needs theatrical antagonists to liven things up a bit. It simply won't be a Batman film without it.
