I really enjoyed that interview with Bale, it was very intriguing. Perhaps the best interview I've ever read with an actor. Bale gets it.

I mean when you look at all of these actors who became celebrities, or are over exposed, and you seen them in performances you can't help but think thats Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp or Brad Pitt or whoever. Though when Bale gets lost in a role, and you don't really know that much of him: you can get lost in his performance. That's Patrick Bateman, thats Bruce Wayne, thats Batman. Hey that Dicky character, isn't that the guy from the Machinist? I mean, we as fans know very little about Bale as a man, but we know his performances.

Well, I have never read a Tom Cruise interview in my life, but when I see him in a movie, I just think "that's Tom Cruise". It has nothing to with how much you know of an actor, it's just how well they can disappear in a role. I think Bale is a good actor, and I like his movies, but I don't like his roles because I don't know much about him. That just seems like a silly excuse to say you hate doing interviews.

I see it as an interviewer interviewing, and Bale being a bit....dickish. An interviewers job is to ask questions, and a part of being an actor, is having to be interviewed. But, it seems Bale hates that part of his job, and starts complaining about it, putting the interviewer in an awkward position.

I have clients from my job that I absolutely hate, but I man up and do my job, instead of being a dick towards them. I just see Bale as being a bit bratty about it all. I understand that part of being an actor (interviewed) probably sucks, but he has a pretty cushy job that pays extremely well, and he's lucky to be where he's at. He just needs to man up, and do an interview, instead of being a dick about it.

Yeah, he is a private kind of guy and doesn't like interviewers that ask about his personal life, and would rather not give them at all if he had the choice, leaving the movie to speak for itself, David Lynch is like that too, but that is not what he was really griping about there.
What his main gripe was was when interviewers make stuff up and print lies about him in pursuit of a more interesting article that reflects better on them, at his expense.
I am guessing that your job, whatever it is, does not carry the risk of thousands of people turning against you, or thinking you're a weirdo if some jealous wannabe interviewer makes up lies about you. So in my book, he can moan about d***s like that all he wants. That's why he sticks to Q&A's , so these wannabe novelists can't make up anecdotes that pepper the article/interview, reflecting badly on him, but well on themselves.
I can see how a person would want to limit potential personal damage to his life through minimising contact with or access to ass****s like that, and would want to get that off his chest. After all, the interviewer asks him about his reasoning, and his reasoning comes back in the form of a moan, which is only natural, as he is not happy about that crap.

Actually the problem was that the interviewer, as many entertainment journalists do nowadays, wanted to write an 'impression' of Bale rather than go for the straight-ahead Q&A that I find far more interesting and informative. Bale was dead-on alluding to the notion of wannabe novelists. It's like journalists can't help themselves and all articles end up reading the same. That this didn't follow the format made it far better, so Bale's instincts were right in this case. It sounds like they got on in the end anyway.

I can't help but like Christian Bale. He seems wierd but I think he's a nice guy, just misunderstood.

He's misunderstood b/c he's an introverted celebrity. He doesn't want to be in the hollywood scene. Probably explains why he gets along with Nolan so well as Nolan appears to be an introvert as well.

I understand completely why he wants a Q&A, he explains himself pretty bluntly, and I can agree with him there. I'm just saying, he doesn't do a good job of being a bit more level-headed about it. He's a bit harsh, and too forward. But it's not that big of a deal to me. I just don't like Bale, personally. I like him as an actor, I just think he's a bit of a dick while not in character. I don't look at his roles any differently because of it, but I'm not going to suck up and act like I like him, just because he's a good actor.

First page is weird, but the rest of the interview is fine. That's just a bloke being himself rather than giving the answers "he's meant to give." Want that **** go to Will Smith or Tom Cruise.

What a great interview. I love Bale for exactly the reasons he takes a lot of flack. Love him, hate him or think he is a walking paradox, he keeps it real.

Heaven forbid that Bale replies to questions with his actual thoughts and opinions.

If 'dickish' means 'honest' then I guess Bale was indeed being 'dickish' in that interview. But I guess it's popular to criticise the man at the moment - I bet the folk who just dont like him were practically salivating and rubbing their hands with glee when they read that interview.

it sounds like the interviewer was enjoying the off kilter direction the interview was going.

The end of the interview was the best part:

He stands up and flicks his eyes across the scene before us, the balcony overlooking the Pacific with the rich men and their wives, and flashes a last charming smile — this time with a measure of mischief.

BALE: You know the reason I picked this place?

ESQUIRE:
Why?

BALE:
'Cause it has nothing to do with my life. I never come here, ever. It's as far removed from any place that I would ever go to. And that's exactly why I chose it. 'Cause it has nothing to do with me.

:funny::up:

Love that ^^^^. Makes me think if is was actually possible for Bale to meet Bruce Wayne in the flesh, he'd probably think he was an rich, self-absorbed and pretentious a$$hole.

It's another reason why I love this guy, instead of putting on a face like some celebrities he just tells it like it is.

I don't think he would somehow, he likes people who go against the grain and do not fit into the usual bs cliches, and BM/BW is exactly that. And it's a little strange that you think he would would hold the fact he was 'rich' against him, considering that, unlike most billionaires, Wayne does not give a crap either way about his fortune. He's not pretentious either, he's an original who finds his own way of doing things. Self absorbed? Only to the extent that he and Bale would have that in common. He seems the type who does a lot of thinking about himself and his life so that he does not lack self-awareness.

Batman-News was referenced as a source thanks to Garth Franklin and Dark Horizons. Pretty exciting! Franklin talks about all the news stories circulating The Dark Knight Rises lately and how most of them amounted to nothing.

Wow that's cool! Thanks for the heads up :) I'll be replying to your email a little later.

As far as the Bale interview goes...I need to re-read it, I thought it was a joke when I read it the 1st time (I didn't read realize it was real until I saw the Esquire source link).

Great interview!

I think the interviewer did a great job. Yeah, you don't usually see interviewers use that type of language, but you could tell he was comfortable and I'm sure he and Bale respected each other a lot more by being so honest and blunt with each other.

I respect the hell out of Bale as an actor and a human being. He's as real as they come. People aren't black and white; they are walking contradictions. The fact that he allows himself to be seen that way, and not under some carefully crafted image, is a breath of fresh air.

That's one of the most entertaining interviews I've ever read.

Funny inyerview more reasons to like christian Bale. The guy says what he thinks.

I would love to see Bale do a comedy. I think if the right movie came along with the right type of dark and cutting humor, it'd be right up Bale's alley.

Patick Bateman is 80% the greatest comedic performance of the 2000s. The other 20% being terrifying.

I think the Coen brothers could do something with him.
