I would almost go so far as to say that the mob conference scene is slightly anti-climatic after this, because The Joker appears as a much more hesitant, more vulnerable individual than in his first scene.

so he comes into a room full of mobsters, sarcastically laughing at them, insults them and then rams a pencil through the skull of one of them. this is before hes even sat down.

what scene are you talking about cos that does not appear to me as 'hesitant' or 'vunerable'! lol!

The part where the mob calls him a freak, laughs at his proposition for killing the Batman, even bigger laughter for his reward, and a hit put out on his head, followed by Joker promptly ending his speech and bouncing from the meeting.

Not to say that Joker was a weakling in that scene, but he was definitely outnumbered and outpowered. He wasn't being taken seriously until he pulled out a bunch of grenades. Even then, that was only a last resort because Gambol was about to pummel him.

Well, it would have stretched credulity for the assembled mob bosses to have been quaking in fear during their first meeting with Joker, as at that stage they had no idea what they were dealing with, and did regard him as just a freak in a cheap suit. His swiftly dealing with Gambol in the bodybag scene probably made them sit up and take notice. Yes, he was outnumbered, but in the end, he showed 'em.

He does this alone and with no protection, aside from the grenades he reveals at the last moment to secure his exit.

At the meeting, the Joker knows that he has the mob right where he wants him, even though they didn't know it yet. Also, when Gambol calls him a freak and crazy, to which he asserts "No, I'm not", the Joker shows great restraint. At the moment, he probably planned to murder Gambol, but to have tried anything in the meeting room was be too dangerous. He waits and exacts his revenge.

You mean try ... when right before that he physically owned Gamobl's BODYGUARD

Yes, the mob takes him more seriously after he pulls out the grenades. But Joker is not hesitant at all in that scene. He comes at them with force. He acts superior in several instances, knowing he's a higher breed of villain. He acts like a confidant business man the entire time.

Which means that the bank scene was the true introduction, although you may not think so.

I said, I could easiy go either way considering that as his introduction, or the mob scene.

Anyone who thinks Joker was hesitant or cowardly in that scene, just flat out has the wrong interpretation of the scene.

Luckily, no one has argued that that was the case, as will be apparent to anyone with English as a first language.

What was said was that The Joker appears more hesitant in that scene. Given his later character trajectory, and his introduction during the bank heist, we know that this is inconsistent behaviour, peculiar to that scene alone, and we conclude that it is a strategic affectation on his part.

Nvertheless, his introduction during the bank heist carries more impact, because the raw velocity of the character is not compromised, as it is in his second scene, with the mob.

I sorta agree with Regwec in that Jokers slightly restrained in the mob meeting. But he's only restrained because he chooses to be, its not because he afraid or anything. I think he is acting kinda coy because he doesn't want the mob to see what hes really like yet, hes playing his cards close to his chest. The only indication that he is actually going to take the mob out is that little gesture he does towards Gambol when the price is put on his head. He like points at him meaning "You'll be first!!" He probly wants to take him out there and then but realizes the smarter move would be to do it later when he has him on his own.

The Joker to the world is the guy who pushes the dominos. He pushes one and everything falls from that one push. That's what madness. The world is a domino line and the joker is the "push" it needs to make everything become chaos

Nolan has said that the movie was supposed to show the Joker's rise to power.

Of course he's not going to be taken seriously at first.

I am really happy that even though they went with the cut smile concept the final look of the Joker was nothing like Kakihara in Ichi the killer or Captain Vidal in Pan's labyrinth, I like both films but I also like the fact that TDK Joker was an original creation.

Nobody took the Joker serious in the beginning of the movie, not even Batman:

"One man or the whole mob...he can wait."

I also venture to guess that the only reason the Joker actually got the money and met with the chechen, is because he was the one who wanted to listen to him rather than mock him. Of course once he did mock him, we never saw the chechen again

Oh yeah, and as far as introductions go, at least in comic movies, I'm sorry, but Batman in B89 still makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck everytime, I think the music has alot to do with it though. I even think Batman's re-introduction in TDK is a pretty awesome scene I don't see alot of people on here talking about. It's really epic and powerful, once again the music when we finally see the real batman, how it just drops out to that low growl, its great. Also when Scarecrow knocks him off the side of the van, when he stands up, the music gets to the dramatic part of his theme right at the same time, it's pretty cool to me

I agree with you; The Joker is anything but weak or hesistent. He merely stepped into the room and demanded attention; no one took him seriously (pun not intended), so he had to get their attention. And later, too, with the grenades.
