Excellent post Irony Man, I agree with everything you said.

I too watched Batman Returns on blu ray last night and I've found that the older I've got the more I've appreciated it. A couple years ago I preferred Batman Forever to Returns but there's no way today thats true.

He can bend his neck there... So why didn't they use that thinner cowl material all of the time?

That's actually kind of a misconception about all of the Batfilm cowls--you actually do have a degree of movement (except maybe the cowl from B89), it just doesn't look good if you move your head around because the cowl isn't designed to do it--the mouth area and eyeholes (etc..) will stay in place even though you're turning your head.

If you watch through a lot of Returns, Forever and even Batman & Robin you can see moments where the actors are turning their heads (about 45 degrees) or looking up/down. On Blu-ray you can even sometimes see creases in the necks of the suits caused by moving the head in them.

In Returns especially in the street fight and whatnot, Batman turns his head often. The best example I can think of is what he throws the remote control Batarang.

Yeah, not a lot of movement... but more than stereotypes of those films will admit to.

It's just like in BF when he does that flip off of the fountain at the Nygmatech party the cowl gets all wrinkled and warped when he does the double kick to the goons.

21 years later... still blowing **** up after delivering a badass line.

Beware it's 95% negative and making fun of it. He says about three positive things about it in the whole two hours.

Weird how he goes back and forth on it.

He seems to like every Batman/Bruce Wayne moment, like every one. That seems to be the only praise he gives it.

True, it doesn't open with Batman but I think the lead up to him brooding in his mansion is as good a first appearance as any.

I've only listen to a two part podcast where he interviewed composer Christopher Drake (TDKReturns). And that was only b/c somebody ran it across my attention on another forum. I like Drake as a composer and found his TDKR score impressive. Otherwise I'd have never heard about it. It was mostly F-bombs galore and butt kissing going on with Smith. And nothing against Affleck, but Smith should just stick to having orgasms & joygasms over his boytoy playing the next Batman. I know he is.

I have always cared less what Smith had to say about Burton's Batman films.

Smith was only good as FATMAN when he did the DINI & TIMM & HAMILL interviews
