The Rebooted "Keep Hope Alive" (that the rights can revert back to Marvel) Thread - - - - - - Part 15

If they're only taking selected properties, then it's not really owning 20th Century Fox at all. It would be just like if Fox sold them all their Marvel stuff and their Star Wars stuff and just continued. How would Disney have actually acquired Fox?
I think part of the authors assertion is that the properties being acquired are worth considerably more in Disney's hands that it would justify the relinquishment of the studio itself if the DOJ required that as a condition for approval. There are other assets that are absolutely more valuable than the Fox movie studio in this deal.

That being said, I don't see them as having to spin it off.

Yeah, Disney certainly doesn't have any need for the hard studio assets since they have their own. If they get the whole package, they'll likely sell off the studio assets one way or another and it probably has more value as a working studio than broken up as land, lights, cameras office furniture etc. - if they can find a buyer interested in keeping it running.

And the only reason the studio is included in the deal is that's probably a condition Fox wanted. They want to make one big deal and get rid of everything rather than trying to find a separate buyer for the studio, so they'd rather let Disney deal with that as long as the DOJ approves.
They also aren't getting the fabled studio lot itself as well, so any land holdings that would have gone with the studios are already much smaller in contrast to the company before the deal. There already was some chatter about moving 20th Century to one of the Disney lots as possible outcome after the 7 year lease agreement expires with the owner of the lots (i.e. what remains of Fox).

Right now, I'm more interested in seeing how they will use the Sky & Star assets especially now that net neutrality is dead. Those parts alone change the game up considerably with the US ISP's. In anticipation of this situation, I can see why the deal makes so much financial sense to both parties now.

Hmmmm.....I hadn't really considered that angle. Thanks.

Wasn't the talk about leasing out the Fox studio lot in Century City? Who will control the lease?

Yes. The left over parts Murdoch is spinning off and keeping is staying as the owner as the lot and leasing it back to the studio being acquired by Disney for 7 years after deal closes.

Here is to wishing that 2018 is the year we can make the motion to close this thread in joy of success...

Happy New Beer, and may it be shared with all our Marvel Heroes at some point in the year to come.

This thread should never be closed!

Well its been one heckuva year. While it had some minor downs (the Fantastikids film rumor, the Doctor Doom movie, etc.), it ended with one of the biggest, greatest surprises this board has ever seen (Disney buying out FOX and regaining the X-Men and FF film rights!) Its a good thing Disney bought Marvel a few years back, 'cause what would've happened if Disney bought FOX while Marvel was still at Paramount or Universal or whatnot? What would've happened to the film rights?

Anyway, Happy New Year to all! With the FOX/Disney deal official, this would make next year's Comic-Con a lot more interesting...

OK, so 7 years after the deal becomes official, the lot ownership will transfer to Disney?

No, the lot stays with Fox. After 7 years they can extend the lease. My guess right now is that they went with a shorter term to give them time to figure out what they want to do, including relocating to one of Disney's lots.

Thanks Big Bang. Last question, when you say Fox, you mean the NewsCorp. assets still owned by the Murdochs, correct?

Yes, sorry. Not easy to be very clear. :P

The "remains" of 21st Century Fox are likely to be merged back with News Corp, so think of them as a placeholder for whatever name they give it for the time being.

Yeah the next few years are going to be crazy with speculation. So much potential has been unlocked, things that seemed so far away.

I don't see how net neutrality being dead in the US affects Sky and Star that much. Maybe I'm missing something here?

In an alternate timeline, this would have been the Avengers, can you imagine?

How about Toby Kebbell as Reed and a chance to redeem himself in the MCU?

Sky is also a European ISP, which would give the Mouse additional leverage if Comcast or AT&T tried to throttle Disney's streaming services in favor of NBC/Universal or Time Warner content providers. Disney could consider extending Sky's reach to North America.

Exactly. The mere threat of being able to bring Sky to NA defangs the content delivery and ISP companies and keeps them from trying to hardball their OTT service once it goes live.

If Disney ever decided to bring Sky over, they don't even have to become the top service. They just have to take away enough subscribers to make the competition feel the heat.

Actually I imagine Ben Affeck, if he was a little younger plus he looks good with gray hair on his temples.

With the movie The Accountant Affleck portrayed a serious-minded genius pretty convincingly. The character he was playing in that was autistic like Reed is in the comics and I felt he brought a level of authenticity to that role that was believable.

And even though some people thought his performance was bordering somnambulistic I felt in the better parts of Affleck's Justice League performance projected a fatherly aura to the Justice League team which complimented Gadot's motherly presence that she brought to her Wonder Woman.
