The Rebooted "Keep Hope Alive" (that the rights can revert back to Marvel) Thread - - - - - - - - - - Part 19

Instead of having Kevin Feige produce the X-Men we'll continue with Director/Writer/Producer Simon Kinberg's interpretation. You're happy about that part of it?

As a whole I really don't like the franchise to begin with.

I wouldn't expect much backlash towards Disney/Marvel if things don't go their way because it won't be for a lack of trying. Massive disappointment from all us fans if anything. But should Foxcast start announcing a slate of unrelated FF films and spinoffs thats where the rejection and backlash will spread. The huge buzz for these films start with the fans and the GA picks up on it. Those projects would likely be DOA. And they better be prepared to give it a proper budget to give it any shred of a chance.

Disney have done what can be expected of them. Can’t exowct them to overpay massively for the same sssets just because the guy they’re competing with is more interested in winning after a number of notable takeover defeats, than his own company’s interests.

All it would be a missed opportunity. You started the same where you were a couple of months ago.

Question - Lets say Comcast wins, what do they do with Fox? Do they still keep 21st century fox up and running? Don't they have Universal Studios making their movies? What Im getting at is if they dissolve 21 century fox, don't the rights to these charters go back to Disney?

Meh me personally the mcu always felt incomplete without xmen, ff and spidey. Just felt hollow. Idk just me I guess. Doesn’t feel as huge. Also if your an xmen fan then Disney will try and bury this franchise like they tried to before. Killing half the mutants and also wolverine. The xmen haven’t been in cartoons in years. If Comcast wins say goodbye to xmen ever in media except movies. Disney will even separate them from the universe probably. FF just recently came back to comics

Eh. I have a hard time feeling bad about that when it’s Disney’s fault. Nothing is stopping them from putting the X-Men in cartoons and video games other than childish spite. They wanna keep doing dumb **** like the last Marvel vs Capcom, that’s on them.

Agreed. I won't be mad at Marvel if this doesn't happen. Any rational fan won't be. The irrational ones are a small minority and no one cares. Avengers 4 will make 2 billion either way. As long as Marvel keeps making good movies, no one will care if the X-Men or FF are coming. It would be nice, for sure. But the MCU will be successful regardless.

There is a difference in not being disappointed with Marvel for not getting this done and the fact that as a life-long Marvel fan, when you have had one character get butchered over and over cinematically and you have never been closer to seeing him done justice only for it probably fail, yeah you have every right to thrown an insane tantrum lol Doom deserves his day in the sun and I won't stop hoping that day wil come...if its not with Marvel, it won't get done...I am pretty sure of that...

I feel Iger would not have mentioned the integration of X-Men and Fantastic 4 into the MCU without a plan in place for their rights regardless of the Fox deal.

The rights deal is with Fox so if the company was dissolved and absorbed by other Comcast assets then the rights deal would end and return to Marvel. And they couldn't transfer the rights without Disney/Marvel approval, which they won't get.

We'd need to see the contracts to know that. My best guess would be that dissolving 20th Century Fox would void the contracts. They are, after all, NOT between Marvel Entertainment and Universal.
So of course they won't dissolve it.

I always had this feeling that Disney has the rights to FF and even xmen they just are keeping it under wraps. But it could be wishful thinking. Man I just hope we get the xmen soon

Comcast would likely do the same as Disney and keep the Fox studios entity going as 'New Fox'.

I think they have at least a couple of subsidiary studios already in Focus Features and Working Title.

Disney have several. Marvel Studios, Pixar, Lucasfilm etc.

Assuming Comcast were to keep Fox going any licences they hold now, like the FF and X-Men, would remain valid.

Disney’s stock bid has already gained $3 billion dollars in value in six months?! The shareholders would be foolish to turn down Disney’s next offer.
There is certainly a valid argument to be had there for the value in Disney's offer.

I could see Universal absorbing quite a few of Fox's franchises, and things like the Marvel rights being left in place there, just to maintain those contracts. Not that I'd want to see that.

I can't blame them for that. It only makes good business sense to focus on those rights they have free and clear. That includes Spider-Man where the only thing they don't have is the film rights, but do control 100% of the merchandising.

It is similar situation with the comics. Why would they even think of creating a whole bunch of new X-Men characters that they could never use in their own films when they can create a bunch of new Avengers or other characters that they can? If anything I'd be even more restrictive than Disney is. It sucks for the fanbase, but business is business.

If that's what it takes, that's what they would do. Anyone thinking otherwise is kidding themselves. From a business perspective it makes sense.

If the FF come back in the comics and then Universal get the FF rights, expect another bomb to hit the Baxter Building again and destroy it.

Yea but it sucks. These characters are iconic and lead marvel to success. If we don’t get this deal say bye bye to anything xmen other than movies. I’m just happy spidey didn’t get the treatment. Man I pray this deal goes through!

But that's assuming the rights aren't transferable. Given the the desperate state of Marvel at the time they made those deals in the 90's then it would not surprise me if the rights are in fact transferable.

I'm pretty sure they get all the merchandise sales for the X-Men franchise barring the ones based specifically on the films. In fact even Marvel themselves seem to have cottoned onto how needlessly stupid that was, as they have slowly started releasing more X-Men merchandise the last couple of years.

So at this point they're only cutting off a potential revenue stream for themselves. Seriously. Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite was one of the most easily-avoidable PR disasters I've ever witnessed. Had they relented in even put in a token few X-Men characters like Wolverine, Storm and Magneto, things probably would've been fine. Now it looks like that series is on life support.

However, it's not an entirely sound long term business plan. Not when there is very real potential for losses, like we saw with Fanf4stic. Money is much better spent on leveraging the assets that they'd be able to take full marketable advantage of. Such as in the parks, merchandise, and so on.

I believe this is where Comcast's real focus is with the Fox assets, and the Marvel properties being tied up with Fox is just gravy. In either case, I think there is room for additional transactions whomever ends up with Fox. Especially in Comcast's case, with the massive amount of debt they would have on their books. It would certainly ease concerns if they sold off some property to decrease that debt load. Obviously so long as the transactions made sense.

It's sort of depressing that this seems to have shifted from the "Keep Hope Alive" thread to the "Who cares, it's only the Fantastic Four" thread.

The thought of Comcast getting the property is depressing. Nothing in their recent history of handling a major franchise lends me any hope of seeing a good FF film under them should it happen.

I still think Iger could/might pull this off. At the very least, I hope he does. I think it has been draining on people to go from the euphoria from a few months ago, anticipating that it is happening, to now so much uncertainty. It is quite draining.

I thought FF was the main thing everyone wanted to get back.
