Not only is the character Jewish, but the names "Benjamin Grimm" and "Erik Lehnsherr" are only coherent for a narrow range of ethnicities: Ashkenazi Jewish and German/American Christian.

There are millions of children around the world who have to deal with watching white people (usually straight) onscreen and feel alienated because Hollywood decided to prioritize a race that did not deserve special treatment and abandon “the other”. These characters were created in a time where nearly every single comic book character was white because they didn’t want to offend the south, among other reasons. Nothing changes about the 4 if Sue was black or if Ben was a Muslim. Either you need to stop using the “reflecting the source material” excuse or accept you need to grow up and realize America doesn’t look like it did 50 years ago.

Those kids will just have to DEAL with it. Plain and simple. Being white has never stopped me from liking john stewart or blade or black panther. The opinion that people cant relate to superheroes if they dont share their skin color is just silly and desperately looking for something to be offended by.

if anyone in the FF should stay the same race-wise it's the ever loving blue-eyed Thing. He's one of the few Jewish superheroes and he should stay Jewish.
I have no problem with Reed being different and think Oscar Isaac would be great for him.
I'd also be ok with Sue and Johnny getting a race swap as long as both are changed and they are still blood siblings. Thar was my main problem with Fant4stic's change, it pointlessly made Sue adopted and they felt like strangers.

Just to clarify, i wouldnt mind if the best actor for the role ended up being non white. I am, however, against the mindset that racebending is a must for these movies.

Sprayberry actually is a good choice for Johnny imo. Alden would make a better Logan

Disney isn't going to hire Ehrenreich for anything after his flameout in Solo. He will be lucky if he doesn't join Taylor Kitsch on Hollywood's discard pile.

At least the Solo guy isn't saddled with the most ominous name an actor could have. Tailored for Kitsch?

I actually see the point with Alden. I'm just trying to skew young. Maybe Richard Madden or Sam Claflin? I don't know.

Do we really need to crap up this thread with the endless 'diversity' debate?

This is a thread about the rights returning to Marvel. There's another thread http://forums.superherohype.com/showthread.php?t=543213&page=3 for the FF in the MCU.

Marvel doesn't even have the rights yet. Are we going to spend the next4-5 years debating the diversity of a cast that doesn't exist for a film that hasn't even been conceptualized by a studio that doesn't even have the rights?

I never understood the "best actor" for the part argument. The best actor would be white because the "best actor" would check off all of the boxes.

And vice-versa with me growing up black (half black, half asian) in America. It never stopped me from relating to Peter Parker or Scott Summers or any other because their skin color was different from mine. I understand the need for more representation - and I think the MCU X-Men really should represent this but I don't see the need for race swaps on the F4. Just do them faithfully.

But no one's going to tick off all those boxes because A) We're talking about real people portraying cartoon characters and B) Long time characters have had dozens of artists and look differently depending on who is pencilling and coloring the pages.

For example, my favorite for Ben Grimm is Terry Crews, who has expressed interest in the role. He's a bit older than most folks would prefer and a smidge darker. But he has the heart, the humor, the physicality and the big personality, which I think is going to be the hardest part of casting Ben.

I definitely agree skin tone should be a consideration, but not the only one.

Is Terry Crews going to have blue eyes if he plays the Thing? Because he's so often referred to as the ever-loving blue-eyed Thing. You can't change that.

Crews then becomes another black actor who ends up with the heavy make-up or vfx role. It's sorta like that redhead conspiracy.

I agree I like Crews, but I don't know if you want give more clout to that theory. It's already happened to Ray Fisher, Zoe Saldana, and Djimon Honsou.

Contact lenses. That'd literally be the cheapest special effect in the budget.
I think it's important to keep the character's religion and eye color, but that's no reason to narrow the actors you audition.

I personally think that debates around whether or not FF casting should have ethnicity/religion/gender changes to the characters, should be relegated to the FF fancasting threads. This thread should be something that brings together all those who love Marvel and the FF, and want all those characters under one roof. In short this thread should be uniting us. Not dividing us.

Years ago, Tom Hanks would’ve been the ideal Reed but that ship has obviously sailed(he’s too old).

In the early 2000’s, George Clooney would’ve also been a good pick: He’s shown he can easily nail the confident leader qualities(Ocean 11) and he’s played more darker, obsessive characters before. Also folks see the Descendants — he can also portray the patriarch quite well.

Let Colin Hanks give it a try? With Tom Hanks as another Reed, an older one, on the Council of Reeds?

I would like to see Claflin in a Marvel movie.

Claflin as Adam Waklock?

That's not the point. I'm not talking about how they would do it. I'm talking about whether they're going to have a black guy with blue eyes, because that would look extremely unusual.

Because it would suck to wait nearly 5 years after the deal is finalized to see the F4 in the MCU. 2022 is the latest they'd have to make the movie. If its done by December - Marvel could immediately begin development on a F4 film and make a 2021 release.

Besides that fact, they can and should introduce these characters in another character's film first. The F4 brand is highly toxic right now and the best way to rejuvenate the franchise is through the MCU brand.

November 2021... the 60th anniversary...

They've been telegraphing their intent for a while at Marvel Studios...

That would be really cool and make a lot of sense.

But what are the doing to telegraph it?

That's fair. I'm definitely not feeling the Terry Crews idea. A black Jew with blue eyes could make people wonder if Reed created his best friend in a transporter accident involving Sammy Davis Jr. and Sinatra.
