The combination of the trailers and reviews gave me no reason to go.

Maybe, like with DC, people will show up to movies that look bad and get bad reviews and if so maybe it doesn't matter what people like me think. They'd be foolish to put an effort into pleasing people like me when they can make money by ignoring people like me, but I think the long term is highly questionable.

Venom certainly has better name recognition than Morbius or Kraven, and I suspect some people just showed up out of curiosity, and that curiosity only goes so far.

Did Venom set up or lead into Morbius or Kraven in any noticeable way? That's one thing that has worked very well for Marvel. They set up future films so that people want to see the next film in line. If Sony really wants to make something out of this, Venom should me making people want to see Morbius.

Venom was pretty self-contained within itself and it's own eventual movies. Nothing about Morbius, but I think adding in a Morbius easter egg into Venom would have been hard. what does alien symbiote have to do with vampire? I'm sure Morbius will throw something in now that Venom was a hit, but I can see why there was nothing in there for it.

If I were attempting a goofy Spider-verse like this, I think I'd map it all out ahead of time. Presumably these characters are going to have some connections and run into each other over the coming years. I would create a broad character map and note all the intersections and find ways to introduce and bring them together as something of a priority.

If I remember correctly, Michael Morbius was some sort of biologist, right? A biologist might have some interest in/connection to an alien symbiote, right? I would have at least made an effort to give him a brief appearance if it had been up to me.

I guess that could be difficult since Leto was only recently cast, etc., but with enough effort and planning, that casting could have been done sooner and the characters put together in some way.

Leto was cast well after filming. They also may not have decided Morbius was next in line. Remember, Silver & Black was supposed to be the 2nd film in this universe before that died. When it comes to easter eggs, you want them organic and not in your face. Throwing in Jared Leto like that in a movie that is only establishing its own world may have been distracting. But now that Venom is successful and you have a world to reference people have seen, you can play with it more. Expand it more organically without random cameos seeming distracting. Marvel could build more easily because they had the Avengers to build to and an easier goal. What Sony is building to is less clear, so while say Nick Fury furthers the Avengers cause, what cause does Morbius in the Venom movie advance for this universe (outside of simply being in it)? That's why I wouldn't have done it. Now, maybe Morbius worked at the Life Foundation at some point, and they reference it in his movie. We can do that now that Venom succeeded.

Venom is already a hit. I agree with much of what you're saying, though. If Sony makes good movies, I will accept this universe they're making. But, I don't want every film to be Venom. Even though I liked Venom overall, it's barely acceptable for me. These movies have to keep getting better.
I meant a HUGE hit. Not just "number one for the week that's it wasn't competing against much" hit but a "this is the next big thing" hit. I don't have much hope that future films will be better, out of all the current films in production Venom is the easiest, most marketable character to base a film around.

Having no connections is better than pulling a dark universe by throwing everything and kitchen sink at it.

Venom 2 I can easily see being better given it will involve Carnage. I think it will be easier to make a good movie with a villain with better history. Both Carlton Drake and Riot exactly didn't light up the world in their comics versions, so I am not surprised they had little to mine them for. But how much better is a different question. It's like for a 1st Spider-Man film they decided to use Hammerhead and the Rose. Not as easy to make that amazing. Even if Venom 2 is like, a 60% on RT type movie, it's better...but still not the greatest thing since sliced bread.

I agree with your other points.

Venom is definitely the easiest and most marketable. A sleeper though could be Silk, especially in this era where the audience is flocking to movies where representation is key. She is both a woman and person of color, and if Sony got the right people attached could become a big thing out of nowhere. I don't have faith behind Sony to pull it off well, but it has reasonable potential.

They also may not have decided Morbius was next in line. Remember, Silver & Black was supposed to be the 2nd film in this universe before that died.

So what you're basically saying is that they didn't sit down and create a solid, long-range master plan, which I'm sure is true. But that's their mistake. If I had anything to say about it, I wouldn't let anything start until I had a very solid 3-5 film plan with another 5 films penciled in beyond that with all the key characters defined and integrated with rough stories and key character arcs clearly defined over that rough 10 film plan.

When literally billions of dollars are at stake, I don't think that's too much to ask.

But at the same time, my lack in faith in Sony is based on my belief that they're not putting that thought and effort and work into it, and they're just flying blind.

Don't want to be a debbie downer. Just something to take note of and keep in mind.

According to sources present in the meeting, Rice reiterated that the deal is still on track to close sometime in the first half of 2019, either in the first or second quarter. But he said that structure of New Fox — down to elements such as human resources and payroll — will be ready to go by Jan. 1. Regulatory processes will likely drag the ultimate closure beyond that date.

My interpretation of that is: "As of Jan 1, they'll close and begin operating as one company. Because some foreign entities might still need to approve aspects of the deal, the new entity may be limited regarding what commerce they can engage in within countries (China) that haven't yet approved the deal.

If that were Simon Kinberg, 3 months are no way enough even for that. He has to keep reshooting Dark Phoenix for months on end.
He just doesn't want to let go. 2 days before release he'll pull it for "tweaking" (adding a new fully CGI 3rd act bringing back Wolverine, Romijn, Stewart and McKellen).
