The Orville is an excellent show.
No it’s not. I watched the entire first season to see what the big deal is and it’s terrible. Are there genuinely people out there who think it’s better than Discovery? Really? From the same man who thinks animal cruelty and pedophilia is funny? If Disney can fire Gunn for those kinda jokes, then they can do us a favor and fire the man who really doesn’t deserve the success he’s gotten.

Sorry for the rant. I just had to get that off my chest.

Don't give a damn about Discovery because I'm never going to pay for the CBS subscription access, so I can't speak to that.

Not surprisingly your rant did nothing to dissuade me. It's an excellent show.

Brazil is the one I’m most curious about since according to ADollarADay one organization there is trying to fight it. That’s the one that I think is going to be a bit up in the air for a while. I do think the deal will ultimately get approval there but you never know....

I think that the deal is happening with or without the approval of Brazil. In the words of Walter White: "Nothing stops this train."

So the EU approval doesn't apply to the UK? I thought Brexit hadn't been approved yet? Until that's approved isnt the UK technically part of the EU approval?

I'd have thought so but the uk does have it's own monopolies and mergers comittee. Also might have to do with sky.

RIP to the many who will lose their jobs for consumerism.
Murdoch was gonna sell anyway, so really it is a matter of plain old capitalism...
I don't like it, but whoever works inside that system (almost everyone nowadays, I know) is subject to the rules of the market.
It is ridiculous that people expect somehow Disney to behave differently than any other corporation, no more or less.

Is anyone a little nervous about the rumors that....

Avengers 4 will apparently have a huge time jump and Tony will have daughter? I’m not sure how they’ll handle those elements

Generally speaking, I've never been a fan of the logistical problems that come with
time travel
, but it's been a fixture of the Marvel universe since Fantastic Four #5, so it's likely to come one way or another.

Agreed, on both counts.

So you watched it, and it's actual merits were dependent on your opinion? And now your opinion is fact after you have spoken for everyone else?

Shhh. Don't point that out, Raven. Then someone might point that out when I declare Discovery a flaming dumpster fire for its terrible writing.

Honestly though, if I were to compare Orville to Trek (Trek, not Drek), then I would say the Orville has produced better episodes than some of the first season of TNG. Some of TNG's earliest efforts were quite bad and even the cast ssy they wouldn't have blamed anyone for dropping the show.

I think Orville is the better Trek show by far because it strives to be Trek and explore similar themes. Discovery on the other hand is an autopsy waiting to happen.

Amazon are reported to be joining the bidding for Disney's sports networks. (from CNBC)

That's interesting not just from our selfish fixation on getting the deal done, but It's interesting to see and imagine how programming will shift and look in the coming years.

If they're already bidding on the RSNs then that must mean Disney are expecting things to close really soon. Didn't the DOJ rule that Disney would have to sell them off shortly after the deal is finalized?

I think they had a 90 day window after the deal closes (with possible extensions beyond that). But I tend to think the primary issue currently is foreign approvals. I think there's a very good chance this will be closed before the end of February, and I wouldn't be surprised if we get an announcement of a closing date soon.

Discovery is doing something new for the franchise. Orville doesn’t even know if it’s a parody or an earnest homage. If it’s the latter, you can’t be stuck in the past. You need to embrace change if it’s good.

Man, if it weren’t for the Disney/Fox deal Fox would without question fastrack/greenlit that Noah Hawley Doom film after Venom made serious bank. It’s a moot point now since Fox won’t be make anymore Fantastic Four films anymore but man it gets you wondering.

And even if it would have been great- even if it would have righted all of the wrongs of previous portrayals- I still wouldn't have found it that exciting. As I've mentioned before, what engrosses me in this world more than the individual characters singularly is the dynamic that existing in this same space creates. And without this deal, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men would never have gotten that opportunity.

I've read worse than "parody" & "homage". Whatever Orville is, it's still the better show because it's "good".

I really hope so. Things are moving sooo fast, it's amazing.

True, I hadn't suspected that Amazon would be moving into that area.

I'm curious if Amazon wants the RSNs just for sports or for something approximating the network affilate model - news, sports & weather alongside local programming and Amazon original shows.

It would be a dramatic shift in terms of offering live content that so far has been reserved for more traditional broadcasting. But I can imagine this leading to other offerings. Sports channels, news channels, music channels etc. that people can turn on and let run like more traditional channels.
