The Rebooted "Keep Hope Alive" (that the rights can revert back to Marvel) Thread - Part 7

I'm sure we'll find out (this weekend?) that the game will not feature any X-Men or FF characters and we'll be right back where we started.

But I'll be at least intrigued if we find out Doom and/or other FF characters are in the game but no X-Men characters are.

But I also think Marvel is savvy enough to know what we're all hoping for (we see it with any little bit of information such as when the Russo brothers mentioned Galactus or took down a photo of a castle location). So if we do get FF characters, Marvel will get questions, and they are likely prepared for that... in the very slim likelihood the FF aren't black-balled.

Bottom line: We can only wait and hope. No matter what else happens that may or may not add weight to thoughts a deal has been or might be done, I won't beleive Marvel have the FF back until it is officially confirmed.

Yup.

Yeah, I wouldn't put any weight on what characters are chosen. I'm willing to bet that X-men would be pushed aside because they can only have so many characters ad would out more priority on characters with toy lines and tv shows. It's more about getting the most out of character exposure. So Guardians of the Galaxy would get higher priority than the x-men. Still, I'd be surprise if Wolverine and Deadpool aren't included.

They could save the X-men for a dlc pack.

I think that would simply give too much away and intrigue other fans. I don't think Marvel would want to play their hand at this moment.

Don't know if this is an indicator of anything but Contest of Champions is the most popular Marvel mobile game around and they just introduced over the past several months a ton of X-characters that weren't there before including Nightcrawler, Beast, Rogue, Gambit, Phoenix, X-23, Old Man Logan - not to mention characters already in the game like Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm, Magneto, Juggernaut, Colossus, Magik, etc.

Conspicuously absent are any Fantastic Four characters but it does feature Kang prominently as well.

No idea what to make of this but thought it would be fun to add to all the conspiracy theories.

:argh: :cmad:

I miss Avengers Alliance. It still sucks that they had to end that game. It was hugely popular too.

Usually you don't know the whole roster for a fighting game until release. They trickle characters over time to keep interest. This weekend we'll know for sure if the game exists and probably a couple of characters from both sides.

If Fant4stic had been successful, we would've had Tranked-up, trickle-down characters. :o

Pet peeve: Does it bug anyone else when you see someone say that Fox "Owns" the FF?

Fox doesn't own s***. They have limited rights to produce and distribute films based on the FF characters as outlined by a licensing agreement.

I know, I know, nobody's going to type all that out, but I'd rather people say Fox "has control of" the FF rights or something instead of saying they own them.:sbr:

You ain't the only one. Even folks who should know better like James Gunn throw the word "ownership" around when they actually mean "rental".

But, as well all know, Constantin is the true owner of everything Fantastic Four. All hail Constantin! May your glorious presence grant us good fortune in the year of our lord Two Thousand and Seventeen!

Contest of Champions were launched before the ban, so they could include mutants. The newer games like Future Fight and Avengers Academy will not feature any X-Men/FF characters.

To me, there's nothing absolute about this so-called ban

Hasbro is still making X-Men figures and entire waves dedicated to X-Men. Also a Fantastic Four Marvel Legends wave is in the works.

Games and merchandise started before the ban can continue to use X-Men/FF chars. Those that start after the ban cannot do so.

Simple as that.

When exactly are you backdating this ban man?

Like the Hasbro Marvel team just revealed one figure for the new Legends Fantastic Four last July. I feel like I've been hearing about this ban for years now. Some of these Legends figures couldn't have been planned before this so called ban started.

I remember when there were all those rumors that Marvel canceled Fantastic Four comic to sabotage the Fant4stic film. When while that movie was in theater the F4 were front and center in a huge company wide crossover event called Secret Wars. Marvel is just shifting focus to other characters. Not the first time it's happened and won't be the last. Theres no ban, just different priority levels.

Undoubtedly there are some politics at play here, but I think the so-called "ban" gets overstated. I don't think it's absolute when it comes to the toys and games. Clearly they can do X-Men and Fantastic Four toys if they want. I doubt Marvel can say "No mutants or X-Men or fantastic four at all in MvC4." I could be wrong, so we shall see.

The ban is pretty recent. Marvel Legend figures have been around for more than 10 years.

What I mean is that games or toy brands that have around BEFORE the ban can use X-Men/FF characters.

If there is a new Ultimate Marvel Alliance game I'm pretty sure we will see mutants and FF.

Then that just proves it's a pretty loose ban and it's not absolute.

That's why we see them in Contest of Champions and not Future Fight.

Kinda sad for MVC4 cuz my mains were Iron Man/War Machine, Cable/Deadpool and Cyclops. 2/3 of them are gone. I grew up with X-Men vs Street Fighter so its a huge pity.

And post Secret Wars Reed & Sue have not been seen since (all we know is they, the kids & Reece are off busily recreating the Multiverse). Johnny is hanging with the Inhumans, Ben with the Guardians of the Galaxy, and Peter Parker owns the Baxter Building. Doom (with a healed face) was hanging around the Iron-man books and I understand has or will be taking over his own version of IM armor as Tony is
killed in civil war 2

And I think the FF book being out of print is a first for them. Afaik they had been in print since the 60's with no significant breaks.

Whether the comic book being canned and the team break up is part of a strategy against Fox's efforts, or simply because the books were not selling well enough is up for debate, but around the same time artists working on trading cards and the like were certainly being told not to make anything with any FF characters, and we were seeing the FF and X-men being removed from merch using comic art that had originally included them.

Licensing agreements with Video game makers or toys may well work differently (especially deals that have been in place for some time), but as far as direct movie tie in merchandising goes (toys in the likeness of the movie versions for example) I don't think there has been anything worth noting for Fox's efforts since around 2009 (Last one having notable merch support was 'Wolverine: Origins').

While I can understand not wanting to produce any new artwork with the FF featured on it, what is sad is that they even remove the FF from old classic artwork, like the Secret Wars #1 cover from the 1980s. It is a historical thing. If they were there before, they should be left there.

I bet even Fantastic Four #1 doesn't feature the FF on the cover now. :o

LOL. Marvel's pettiness knows no limit. It truly is something special and beyond embarrassing.

Hey, I've seen people argue in their favor that it's all a business decision. Wouldn't the folks who want the film rights of Fantastic Four in Marvel Studios' hands be on board with Marvel, and by extension, Disney, making moves as to not give any attention to characters that are in the hands, movie-speaking, of their competitors?

I mean, I personally find it petty, but I've heard a few say something along the lines of 'Hey, it's a business.'

A lot of business decisions can be perceived as being petty but when it comes to money and getting one over the competition, all is fair in the proverbial.
