The Dark Knight Rises The TDKR Box Office Thread V

I saw it this past Saturday night in IMAX at the Smithsonian for my third, and possibly final time. I was pleased to see how full the showing was before mine (the late one). Even though I was at the late one, still a good crowd, not near full though. I'm surprised the movie has done as well as it has, considering the shootings. I heard so many people at work and in passing that said they weren't going because of it, and that they'd wait for the dvd. :csad:

The film is quite popular among UK youth: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/dark-knight-rises-christian-bale-anne-hathaway-364049
Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, starring Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway, leads the page views for U.K. youth-focused websites, according to research published Tuesday.

Youth web network w00t! Media said The Dark Knight Rises accounts for 44 percent of all film-related web pages viewed across a collection of youth sites here.

The data, collated over the first six months of 2012 from sites including Holymoly, The Shiznit and Blogomatic, also shows that Ridley Scott’s sci-fi actioner Prometheus followed with 18 percent of page views amongst youth-focused websites while The Avengers, directed and co-written by Joss Whedon, snagged 16 percent of the page views.

How about box office?

In 3rd week, more people went to TDKR compared to Avengers but Avengers got more money in Turkey. No wonder why studios crazy about 3D.

I'm sorry but to say it would have made $500m max is ridiculous. It was on track to blow out TDK in its opening week and suffered devastating declines on the second and third weeks because of the shootings. If it were to end up only $20-40m ahead of its current trajectory without the shooting then it would have been the biggest drop off for any record breaking blockbuster ever. If you look at any of the past films that blew BO charts away they didn't suddenly just bomb after the first week (yes, in this context the declines you are suggesting would be a bomb). The low would have been $560m easily, the high at $590.

Also, the idea that this wouldn't have generated extremely high WOM is just silly. As I said before, people were looking forward to seeing the conclusion of TDK, not see more of the Joker. Everyone knew the Joker wouldn't be in it and the film was still on track to crush TDK's opening. The film was marketed and pushed completely as the conclusion to the TDK Trilogy. That's what got people to go out and see it in the first place. It was a cultural phenomenon on the level of TDK in its own right; it was the conclusion to a legendary trilogy and thus the conclusion to an era basically. People who didn't even see TDK in theaters were going to go see this movie because it permeated in the culture so much. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree but you're selling the film extremely short if you think it wouldn't have blown past TDK even with increased ticket prices and inflation taken into account for the total number.

How are you so sure of this? TDKR dropped decently in the subsequent weeks, not as great as the TDK but it didn't bomb.

Somewhat deceptive considering TDK had really great legs. Pretty hard to get over 3.0 weekend multiplier from such a huge weekend. So the dropoff seems higher because of that.

You're talking as if TDKR dropped like Potter/Twilight. It hasn't.

Well Liam did a good job of covering a lot of what i would have said.

Listen, i was in the same league i really thought TDKR would break most or all of TDK's records. The reason i don't believe it would have now even without the tragedy is that i don't feel the general public have responded to it the same way they did to TDK. Not even counting the hype not the surrounding tragedy just the actual film itself.

Most ppl i talked too who saw the film and are not huge comic fans said they enjoyed it but not as much as TDK and i believe that's the reaction to a lot of ppl in the general audience. They liked it but it didn't impact them the same way TDK. That's what ive been hearing for a lot of public. That's not a knock against TDKR it's just that TDK was such an amazing movie.

I agree the opening took a blow to an extent but i feel TDKR's legs are pretty reflective of how it would be regardless.

There is nothing there that changed my view.

This pretty much says everthing. You could have just stopped typing after this sentence. No matter what anyone says or what facts are presented here, you will never look outside of your own box.

Not to mention, after the movie opened, people at Cinemascope rated it A. RT critics rated it 87% fresh and users 93%, and it´s currently rated 8,9 at IMDB, so clearly the movie was quite well-received.

Exactly.

The main reason some of the GA and fanboys didn't like the movie as much as TDK, it doesn't have a sympathetic/colorful villain.Bane is quite old school bad guy.Guys like Joker,Loki has been always fan favorite (even more than heroes) Bane is like bad guys in westerns and such. Tough, bad guy without visual appealing.

Hero is dark, villain is dark, story is darker than ever.:woot:

TDKR is probably most somber movie ever got such box office success in history. Don't you think?

I agree that the fanboys didn't enjot TDKR as much however I would disagree that the GA didn't enjoy it as much. TDKR was far more like your typical blockbuster than TDK.

The joker is far from sympathetic villain and before Thor and the avengers....Loki was an unknown villian to the*GA

Even characters like Lecter,Joker,Loki,Hans Landa etc. are quite sympathetic for audience because their dominance over other people based on intelligence, higher taste, humiliating jokes etc. They are more joyful than anyone around them despite they are the bad guys.

Loki was unknown for GA but just one of those villains created to be fan favorite. He is like cosmic version of Joker. What he does sick but he is such a fun to watch.

For example Green Goblin has huge potential to be fan favorite if it's written well. Mandarin has potential.

Look to an extent I think you're right that Rises was never going to match TDK in terms of appeal. Having said that the shooting affected not just this film but all films, and based on recent reports is still down. Rises was tracking huge numbers, and whilst it's not an exact science the numbers were indicating $20 million more than what it took in, so I think it's fair to say it really took a significant hit that it was never really going to recover from. Truth is we'll never know to what extent those events had on the film, but given other films were also affected the incident was a blow to proceedings.

This has already been discussed a few times here, about that studio report that the low performance of the watch, Total recall and bourne legacy had to with the tragedy which i already said i thought was total BS.

Those films were all bombs waiting to happen tragedy or not. I also didn't trust the report that came out a few days ago that 17% of viewers were still hesitant to go to theaters when i also read how this past weekend was actually 30% above of last years.

Unfortunately i feel the studios might be trying to scapegoat a lackluster summer release with the tragedy. As for TDKR yes we'll never know for certain what its total would have been but for my reasons given i just don't think it would have topped TDK regardless.

Either way the film is on route to $450m or near domestic, a billion ww, any complaining over this is ridiculous. The studio isn't complaining, nolans not complaining it is a damn great total for a 3rd film in a series and in general.

Bourne made fourth million dollars opening weekend and is ahead of the original. That's a bomb?

It was included in that article highlighting films this past summer that were supposedly affected by the tragedy. I think it is doing about as good as anyone should have hoped for.

Glad to see its still holding strong here in the UK!!

Yeah, I know. I just thought it was strange that you called it a bomb.

In some respects, I think TDK was a bit of an aberration. It was not just slightly more popular than its predecessor (comparable, for example, to X2 vs X-Men), it was hugely more popular. I remain surprised at this. TDK was complicated, intelligent and a bit of a downer. And those types of movies aren’t usually mega blockbusters. But Nolan seems to have a knack for balancing the artistic with the commercial (note Inception).

So while TDKR was guaranteed to be big, topping TDK was a long-shot. Except… BB and TDK were proportionately more popular domestically (compared to foreign markets). It seems it’ll be the other way around for TDKR. So with this new variable, it'll probably match TDK’s $1B anyway.

I can say that it is a positive sign that This time around the box office collections can be attributed to popularity of the protagonist, that is it is Batman himself who is drawing in people as Bane is relatively unknown villain.

Batman Begins was a moderate success and many people had said that huge response to TDK was due to Joker factor, some even questioned Batman's popularity saying that the sequel would earn significantly less amount but now it looks that in terms of worldwide collections it will come close to TDK's figures.

I hope people see this a 2nd time as for me it was so much better once I knew exactly what was going to happen.

Yeah... It gets even better in 2nd time and more. I think TDK was same too.

Does Bane get taller 2nd time? :woot:

I was disappointed after 1st showing after all the hype, missing a couple of plot points, not everything happening that I had wanted and seeing it on a ****** screen. 2nd time IMAX knowing exactly who was doing what it really surprised me how well it flowed & I liked it all the way through. Can say this is a triumphant superhero trilogy now, the 1st with 3 great films (with the disclaimer that you might need to watch TDK & TDKR twice before you can fully appreciate them).

Totally. In that sense, it was more like Begins. Bane and CW were great, but the great draw of the movie was to follow Bruce/Batman´s emotional arc. I was almost jumping out of my chair and cheering out loud when he finally climbed out of the pit.

I'd say all three of the films improve with age.

I love BB a lot more now than I did on the first couple of watches.

Now that you say it, BB is also one of those films that improve a lot every time you watch it. I rewatched it & TDk straight after my original TDKR disappointment & they were so good (BB was the best I've ever seen it for some reason) that it kind of compounded my disappointment. Seeing TDKR again this weekend was so great now that I know I have this superb trilogy to rewatch for the next 50 (hopefully :woot:) or so years!

I fully agree that TDKR is more blockbuster-ish and not as dark as TDK... but damn the 'beat down' scene is more disturbing/sad/emotional/WTF/holy crap than anything in the entire trilogy.

and feel free to edit this post and add your own '/' since I can think of about 900000 more :hehe:
