I seem to be the only one facepalming at this.
Back when the DC Cinematic Universe was first announced, there was one fear I had. My biggest fear was that WB would make the same mistake Marvel did and turn their solo films into JL promos/setups as opposed to letting them stand on their own as good solo films. I really hoped WB would not go that route. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of putting my faith in WB once again.
What some people seem to misinterpret is that this is not a World's Finest film. From what we've just heard from Snyder and WB, it is a Superman film with Batman appearing in it (or Superman: featuring Batman, as I like to call it). Maybe it is meant to be a WF film and Snyder/WB will clarify that in the future but for now, it is a Superman film with Batman in it to our knowledge. In other words, WB just made the same mistake Marvel did. This film might end up being the Iron Man 2 of the Superman franchise. Instead of coming up with a good Superman story to stand on its own, we have to devote precious screen time to throwing in other DC characters on the side.
I also do not trust Snyder and Goyer by themselves. As much as I loved MoS, it had a lot of problems when it came to pacing, certain parts of the story, execution of certain scenes/ideas, and its color palette. The main strengths of the film were its acting, its spot on characterization of the characters, messages/themes, and its action. The former things I listed are by no means major problems to the film but that is because it was the first movie and it was more acceptable to get away with such problems, especially since the first film was more of a setup film. The second film and onward simply cannot have those problems be there to the same extent or they will get far more criticism than MOS even got, and I fear this will happen if Goyer and Snyder are given complete freedom over the story with no other writers involved.
At the very least, the acting and characterizations for Batman and Superman and the dynamic between them should be great. Cavill was an excellent Superman and the way they characterized him was near-perfect. I have faith they will do the same thing with Batman. Maybe this will be the first Batman in live-action to not be watered down and be THE Batman in all his might and glory. I'm hoping the new actor will end up being the Christopher Reeve/RDJ of Batman as well (in other words, the definitive Batman actor).
