I thought Nolan offered Batman to Heath.

He did. Well, not sure if the full-blown offer was made, but I think Nolan was definitely interested in having him audition but Heath had 0 interest in playing a superhero.

Also, Chris Cooper was the initial choice for Gordon but he turned it down.

I'm pretty sure Nolan said somewhere that Bale was his first choice (I assume this was hot air, considering he said it after he cast him). Maybe it was one of the DVD features?

I also remember reading something about Nolan backing Christian Bale and David Goyer backing Jake Gyllenhaal in the end.

Yeah, in terms of the people that actually auditioned I'm quite sure Bale was his first choice. I heard the same thing about Goyer initially liking Jake too...so glad that one didn't pan out.

Nothing against Jake, I just don't see him as Batman and never did.

Jake would have been an awesome Nightwing.

I remember reading that Pacino and Gandolfini were in talks for Maroni. But i think Gandolfini himself may have wanted it and that was it. It's possible that Pacino was going to be asked to be Maroni in TDK due to Heat's influence. Nolan always does that type of nod to a major film that influenced the Batman films. Rutger Hauer was his way of giving a nod to Bladerunner. So maybe Al was to be his little nod. The italian gangster who is now the big fish in Gotham. My God imagine that!? He originally wanted Dwight Yokem as the bank manager in TDK but he couldn't due to scheduling. He then cast Fichtner (who was also in Heat) in the role of bank manager. I read that he offered Treat Williams the role of Foley in TDKR, again because Prince Of The City was apparently a big influence.

I never would have seen Ben Affleck as Batman but I sure as hell see it now.

Bruce/Batman is a role I could never "fan cast", nor have I ever tried.

For fun.

He offered Guy Pierce the Ducard/Ra's role, too. He pictured it as more of a brotherly relationship before going to the surrogate father angle... at which time I think Daniel Day-Lewis was asked?

Nolan revealed in the documentary that Gary Oldman was seeked for Ras but Gary turned it down because he was sick of playing villains. I believe Chris Cooper was offered Gordon around this time. Anthony Hopkins-Alfred (this one im not sure about). Then he came to Oldman with the idea of Gordon. I do think that Guy Pearce and that age range was the original idea for Ducard/Ras before he decided it's best to keep him older. I think it was Pearce himself who didn't like the younger idea. After Gary passed on the villain, Daniel Day Lewis and Viggo Mortensen were approached for Ras. Both turned it down. DDL would have made a great comic book Ras but Liam was perfect for Ducard and has what it takes to be a villain as well.

As much as i liked Gough as Alfred, if they ever did a more serious take on Batman back in the 90's..

I would cast Hopkins for Alfred, Hoskins for Penguin, Gibson or Liotta for Two-Face, Jim Carrey for Riddler but in a more sinister way.

Dat Trailer 3 tho...

Love the Nokia trailers, but i find they're always a little too action-packed and spoiler heavy. The music was incredible though.

Trailer 3= theShape's gif reaction all the way haha.

At the time, i was down with the first full-length trailer for TDKR but now i find it super dull. It incorporates a couple of GREAT shots of Bruce Wayne walking into the party + walking out of his cell, that didn't make it into the final cut. Im thankful for those rare shots. But the trailer as a whole is very bland. I do still enjoy the teaser though.

As for fan trailers...I'd go with this.

Trailer #3 and the Nokia trailers were my faves. Mr. Waaayne... Chills!

Ugh at the teaser. I still don't like it. :funny:

The editing is not good in the teaser, when it comes to the new footage. So i get why you dont like it. And the CG buildings do nothing for me. But i like the build up with the Begins/Knight footage, with Liam's voiceover. Just a cool vibe that made me feel like this was really a closing chapter.

I think im gonna watch trailer 3 now. It's a shame they didn't use that theme in the movie towards the end or something. That music gives me goosebumps.

Wasn't Katie a studio mandate? So, it's more like Nolan had zero say on it. :hehe:

I heard that the studio demanded there be a romance element to the script, but Nolan selected Holmes quite happily.

Chinese whispers. :hehe:

I have to say, I really enjoyed all TDKR trailers, but the overall marketing wasn't a patch on The Dark Knight.

^ Oh, that's right. I think Harvey Dent was originally going to be his childhood friend, but was soon changed to Rachel.

I just have to say I always thought the white title card for the trailers was a pretty genius idea. It suited the both the wintery bleakness of the film as well as the aspect of Bruce rising into the light (which also could hint at death). But on a subconscious level I think it was a great way to plant the seed that it was going to be a totally different beast than TDK despite having "The Dark Knight" in the title.

The end of the teaser with the white title card reveal and the chant, followed by the tease of Bane lumbering towards Batman was so ominous. Loved that.

Supposedly, only Bale and Holmes were Nolan's first choices.

Wasn't Reese Witherspoon the first choice ? So much Nolan told her the studio didnt allow him to cast her . I read this just a few weeks ago somewhere.

It's highly possible.

Like I said, it's all chinese whispers at this stage. I do remember reading somewhere that Holmes was Nolan's first choice, or (at least) most liked at the audition stage.

I read that too but I think it was for Swank's role in Insomnia.
