The Dark Knight Rises The TDKR General Discussion Thread - - - - - - - Part 156

Well, think I've finally left the r/Batman subreddit for good.

It's kinda a negative space, generally. Unless you love The Batman, only.

And it's gotten to the point where ranking The Dark Knight Rises lower than Batman & Robin is often the norm there and considered 'based'. I'll never get this weird, bandwagon-y effort to paint this film as the worst thing in Batman history.

Holy **** Page 97 you guys went in on why Batman fandom has the good the bad and the ugly , particularly in the modern climate , I relate to all of it. The weird obsessions, nit picking, the shiny toy syndrome etc i blame it mostly on Social media as some of you have said. I generally watch vids on the tube on the phenomena that is " Social Media " and the effects it has on the mind. It should be labelled a epidemic at this point but thats a whole other discussion.

Ironically i came back into this thread off the Batman subreddit going in on TDKR and by my surprise OnLeatherWings mentions the same thing, Shame really as its pretty much a cesspit when it comes to talking about Nolan's Trilogy (more so TDKR). ive never really got this definitive take BS, I just look at these films and view them as comics i would take from the store. Different artwork, mythos, lore. Yes some are better than others but they all have a unique stamp on me.

As for the current cinema dynamic, This has been talked about on numerous threads the biggest one lately being Furiosa. Numerous examples why the common cinema goer is not going anymore.

To be fair…it can always be worse. For instance, I think a large chunk of Star Wars fandom is in something approaching a mental health crisis at the moment where I think they’ve just about destroyed their own ability to enjoy anything due to hive mind negativity led on by on constant stream of ragebait. That’s become clear to me with how out of proportion the reaction to The Acolyte has been to what the show actually is. It’s just become hatewatching at this point for many of them and it’s genuinely sad to me. This is not to say that I think everything Disney has done with the franchise is good or there aren’t plenty of legitimate criticisms to make...there's an adult discussion to be had there. I just think at this point it’s become a cautionary tale of what can happen to you if you allow fandom…or specifically, that sort of “purist” fandom to play too big of a role in your identity. It inevitably seems to lead to this perpetually resentful place. You always have the choice to just not watch it, but people are too addicted to the drama rollercoaster.

Batman fans, for whatever reason seem to just have the need to bash one thing in the same breath as praising another thing. It’s annoying, and I think it's definitely more exaggerated in the social media age, but I guess it makes some sense when you have a character who’s been reinterpreted with so many different creative visions and people naturally have different tastes and preferences. I also think most of the people commenting on a Batman Reddit who are that invested in The Batman are probably skewing younger. Again, with Star Wars fans, you’ve got all ages jumping on the toxicity train. You’ve got a lot more culture war seeping into it. It’s a much uglier thing overall that dominates the narrative.

Someone uploaded the original IMAX scan of the prologue in 4K

and the original Bane audio

I think I still have that leak with the original voice somewhere...

I was so used to it that, to this day, the final version still sounds a bit off to me. 😅
Especially how they finally cut that part : "...we had to find out what he told you about us."

I prefer the final "Of course!" though. Way funnier/maniac.

I'm not bothered at this final fight at all. Sure Nolan isn't the best at the fight scenes, but I love the overall mood and desesperate situation of this. Like is the very final battle for Gotham, with Bats at daylight and an epic score. How can this be bad? haha

I've come to like the second fight more and more.

Especially the parallels to the first fight. Bane catching Batman's fist again, only for Batman to power out of it, an ascending Bane approaching Batman again, only this time Batman isn't fighting from a place of desperation, etc...

I missed some interesting discussion here, like DC having Variant covers for various Batmen, but not Bale. I definitely thought WB was snubbing TDKT due to the fall out with Nolan, but turns out, there is one, by Dan Mora no less:

Every time I go there, there some variation of who the best Batman is, and their takes on the Nolan trilogy are consistently bad.

In general, when it comes to characters like Batman, it's hard to find interesting discussions. When I do find them, they're usually old discussions. Batman social media frequently devolves into comparisons between incarnations.

Always loved that extra punch. It's an important character beat. Total reverse of the first fight, this time Batman is poised and in control and Bane is being consumed by pure animal rage which is further giving Batman the advantage. So satisfying.

What a great film.

I wish people didn't nipticked so much about the fight scenes. I admit they aren't that great, both BvS warehouse fight and Battinson's ones are better, but there's so much gravitas here, is a really great payoff. Unfortunately Rises keeps being the more underrated of the trilogy, and it bugs me that some people calls it one of the worst cbms evere made.

Reddit kills brain cells, Batsy. Scientific fact.

I think it just bummed me out that r/Batman has kinda just become a The Batman '22 circle-youknowwhat. Apologies for the term - but I'm not sure how else to put it.

I saw a hugely upvoted comment that said "I've not any seen legitimate criticism of The Batman." That was enough for me.

The Dark Knight Trilogy is the punching bag, and I'm over it.
