The Xbox One - Part 8

I have had some bull **** with Gamestop.

A few months back, they tried to sell me an opened copy of Dishonored (Game of the Year Edition) as new. When I asked the guy how they could sell an opened copy as new, he said it made no difference. I asked him if I brought it in like that if it would be considered new, he suddenly got very quiet.

They sell you a game for 60 bucks, you take off the plastic, it's automatically worth 35 dollars, even if you never use the game, or any of the DLC. Then they sell it to you for 55.

The open copy was also the store copy that every employee got to check out and play. So not only is it open but it's often also very used, lol.

I only buy used from trade in shops.
Something similar recently happened with the PS3 version of Nier (another JRPG).

Nier for PS3 was going for about 40 bucks used on eBay, when Gamestop, suddenly restocked all its stores with used, but like-new copies of the game, for about 20 bucks, so again, more than it would have cost new (new it would cost 14.99).

Needless to say, people on eBay were livid. And people who wanted the game, but didn't want to pay 40 bucks had... mixed feelings.

Gamestop was still ripping us off, yet saving us 20 bucks.
Haha. Can be annoying when games and other things I want suddeny skyrocket in price due to rarity. Aside from comics where that's normal for very old issues I ended up paying more than £100 for a book to complete a collection of books I used to read as a kid. I didn't know at the time that it was never published in the US which made demand 100 times greater than supply.

Fortunately, I put it on the desk, and walked out.

And I might have yelled some obscenities on my way out.

Then I got it on Amazon for two dollars less. Sealed.

My personal experiences trump what someone anonymously says on the internet.

There's a reason I ****ing loathe Gamestop.

Eh you're lying about any "personal experience". GameStop rather you buy used. They don't want u buying new anything. So they aren't going to take in a trade and turn around and sell it for new.

Okay, Pat, I'm making it all up. They didn't try to sell me an opened game as new. In fact, all the people posting similar stories online are lying.

We just have a baseless hatred for Gamestop.

GS sold me an opened Forza 4 as new, and they even told me it was an opened game, but they were selling it to me new, cause they were out of their other copies. I did it, cause Target was sold out, and I didn't feel like wasting more time by going to another store. The disc was mint, and I looked at it before buying. This was on launch day of that game.

But yes, GS sold me an opened game as new, for full price.

No, no, no. Im not saying that at all, I know thats a fact.

I was referring to you making the claim they would take in a game for trade, then sell it new. If they were gonna try any shady tactics, it would be them getting you to buy a used copy without you knowing, meaning that they take in 100% of the profits. They don't want you buying new at all. For example, on a new game that costs 59.99 GameStop makes like 4 bux, on a used game that costs 54.99 they make the full 54.99 thats why when you go in to buy a game they'll push you towards the preowned. In fact there is a GIANT message that pops up on the POS that says something along the lines of "SELL THE CUSTOMER THE USED COPY WE HAVE IN STOCK!!!!"

I remember when Gamestop tried to do this to me with the original LBP. That's when I started to stop shopping there. It was absolutely stupid and made no sense how they were trying to sell an opened copy as new. Most other stores, if they try and sell you an opened product, they would at least do it with a discount, but not GS. Full new price, for something that's opened

I never buy full price unless it's GTA or Zelda. Pretty much every other game franchise I just wait.

I don't shop at Gamestop much, but yeah, I never take an open game and buy it as new. I don't care how good it looks or anything, it doesn't make any sense to me to do that.

Now that I have very limited time (probably for a couple of years :csad:) and a huge backlog there will be very few games I can justify buying on Day One, and probably no totally single player games at all. Mass Effect, Gears of War and maybe Halo 5.

Lol, yeah.. That stupid message. Like I said the only thing GS does that I believe is shady is the open game as new. Now it's not every time because sometimes that case is legit the last one and it was gutted as display.. But 9 times out of 10 that game was also played by associates. I even told my bosses when I worked there that we should sell those games at 10-15% off.. The district leaders just lol'd.

that's about the only time I'll accept an unsealed new copy.

if it's launch day of a popular game and they have only one left and I really want the game and don't want to go somewhere else.

basically when I'm in the "Give It To Me Now!!" mood. :o

I still go to Gamestop on occasion, like if they have a pre-order bonus (like for Arkham Knight, for instance), or if I'm doing a midnight launch for something (like I'll be doing for Smash U next month), but I'm pretty insistent about getting a sealed copy. They try to talk me out of it from time to time, but I've been lucky in that they usually have a sealed copy and cave. Most of the employees at my local store seem to "get it" as far as why I want it sealed and not get on my case.

Well to be honest, I think its kinda dumb that gamers whine over a game being opened. Does that game being opened all of a sudden make it not play as well? No, its the same f'ing game. The code thats imprinted on the disc is the same, it hasn't diminished in any way shape or form. You aren't buying a car, there is no "mileage" to a video game.

But, on the other hand, its an opened product, Gamestop wont return it as thus, so why should the consumer pay the same price as a sealed game. I mean if you go to Best Buy or Target and they have to open a TV to place out for display, even if that TV isn't ever turned on, by the virtue of it being opened, gives the consumer a discount. Not sure why GS doesnt do that. Id have to guess its because they already make such pitiful profits on a new game sale they don't want to have that slashed.

So i see both sides. Gamers whine because, well thats what they do and Gamestop clinches its fist around its money, because well thats what they do. Its a headache being caught between the two.

I don't know why they would talk you out of a sealed game. If you grab a game from the wall and place it on the counter, then they go to the drawer to grab the "guts" from that game, then that means theyre going to have to take another new game, open it, remove the disc then place it on the wall. All that does is create more work for them, so why they would do that is odd. GS employees have enough bs work they have to do, so adding more to that pile isn't something anyone that works in that store would want to do.

A sealed copy is guaranteed to not have been used (well, sure, not 100%, since they can be resealed, but it's very unlikely). An opened case, you really don't know. Sure, anyone can say that it's just been gutted for display, but there's no way for you to know 100% that it hasn't been taken out and used, thus making it a used copy. I could tell anyone that I never actually played my copy of "insert game here", I just opened it for ****s and giggles, but then still play and use it accordingly. Pretty valid criticism, actually.

^well, by seeing both sides, you should see what's wrong there. There's a thing in business called standards and practices, and it seems GS goes against that with recently opened games. They won't give me a full return on a game I paid full price on if I brought them an opened case. Cool, I get it, that's the rules. But somehow, they can go around and sell me an opened game as new, which breaks their return policy. They're kinda breaking their own standards, and for what? Why are we as a consumer held to a stricter standard than how they're continually operating their business? It doesn't make sense to me.
