The Xbox One

MS should focus on putting out a solid console in the Scorpio and then start consolidating for the future like Sony did after they realised they'd stuffed up with the PS3 launch. There's no burning need to try and win this gen (which looks impossible anyway), but they should be looking to win back trust to position themselves well for whatever comes next. Nintendo have released a totally new console rather than a mid-gen upgrade so I don't think they can be compared meaningfully to the other 2 for now.

Looks like Digital Foundry are doing it on Eurogamer at 2pm GMT / 6am Pacific / 9am Eastern.

I do think it's gonna become a constant upgrade thing from here on out instead of buying new consoles. I know the NVidia Shield is kind of doing that by just having new firmware installed in regards to the ability of the thing, and also just streaming PC quality games via GeForce Now.

Well then

Nice, Digital Foundry seem to love it and it meets or beats all the expected specs. Sounds like a massive difference to the base X1. And can do 4K at 60FPS with power to spare on some titles which is a good sign at least.

yeah, a lot of the tech stuff goes over my head.

but the gist of the articles seems to be that it is indeed an impressive, beastly machine that will provide benefits to existing X1 and 360 BC games as well as non-4K tvs.

plus, it looks like it does have a 4K UHD Blu-Ray drive, so that's a plus too!

it's a shame this won't come out until the Holidays cuz I'd really like to get this, provided it is priced reasonably, and get back into the Xbox family.

That's all well and good, but what are they going to do with it?

Nope because they have already confirmed this thing won't have games exclusive to it unless that has changed. Also if this did indeed become the case, you might as well just build a gaming rig. With the amount of money invested with purchasing each new iteration, you can have a PC that can do more. Sony and Microsoft have really forgotten the benefits of console gaming. The modern consoles really are midrange PC's with all the warts that come with it with the added frustration of connecting to incredibly slow services.

It's a beast for a console and I'm happy we can say goodbye to performance deficiencies on the current library of games.

Microsoft sows the seeds of future gaming.

Microsoft, known pretty much around the world for its technology, is launching something called Xbox Academy this week in its Microsoft Store in Sydney, Australia. Xbox Academy is a series of free game development classes made in collaboration with the Academy of Interactive Entertainment.
The AIE is a multi-national and non-profit college primarily focused on video game development, animation, and visual effects. This week also happens to be Australia's Easter school holiday. This is in an effort to get young minds interested in game design and give the opportunity to those who want to get a taste of the process.

The program features three different courses led by AIE tutors, covering game design, game programming and developing games specifically for the Xbox One. All the courses are similar to what is taught at the actual college, and the cost is covered by the Microsoft store. Each class is three hours long.
GameSpot recently got the chance to take a media session of these courses, in which they detailed their experience here.
"The emphasis is that students can easily continue to pursue the skills and programs they learn during the Xbox Academy courses at home. Unity is a free download, and every Xbox One can easily be turned into a development kit. Participants of the Xbox Academy program will be able to save any work done at the Microsoft Store onto a complimentary USB flash drive and continue working on their projects."
The courses may have a focus on Xbox, but the lessons learned are transferable to other formats as well, sowing the seeds of future game developers for sure. Xbox Academy classes will run from April 10 to April 22, 2017. Find more information on the workshops here.

There's images of the Scorpio Dev Kit (can't post right now) which shows a black and white box (white on the top half). Wonder if they'll go with that for the final design of the retail Scorpio.

just looked it up.

looks pretty similar to the S - which I like.

so hope the final product looks similar.

the Eurogamer article about the specs said Scorpio had essentially the same ports as the S, and I believe they described the console as "compact."

edit: Here's an article with pics.

Ugh, I hate the white color. I prefer my consoles black. My white 360 stood out like a sore thumb with all of my electronics.

Hopefully it doesn't look like that. Not a fan.

I prefer the white. but it would be nice if they released a black variant as well.

also, I really like the S controller, so hopefully the Scorpio's controller retains that overall design, too.

wonder if they will introduce any improvements/features to the Scorpio controller.....

I prefer black as well (even though I like the look of this outside of integrating with my current electronics which are 100% black). I hope the air vents stay at the back so I can stack this console.

The Nintendo Switch and PlayStation Vita almost had some extra competition.

Xbox-Handheld.jpg

With the Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation Vita, and, most recently, the Nintendo Switch, both Nintendo and Sony have their entries in the handheld market. Now, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has revealed that Microsoft has previously looked at joining that race, too—but held off because of the “power of a television.”
“Well,” Spencer said, speaking to Gamasutra, “let me say that the amount of times we’ve designed, roughly designed, an Xbox handheld, or a cheap Xbox kind of stick that you could plug in and stream from an Xbox in the home, or play low-powered games… We are always thinking and brainstorming on different scenarios of where the console could go. Or [where] the gaming experience, I guess, more specifically, could go.
“In terms of where console will go, I still believe in the power of a television in the home… I believe in that television experience, which I really believe console is docked to, in my mind. Console, let’s four of us grab controllers and try to go play Overcooked and yell and swear at each other… I think that experience is magical. And I think it’s something that—I know it’s something that we’re committed to, in the long run.”
Spencer also spoke about the handheld market back in February. At that time, he revealed that Microsoft also stayed out of the handheld market because of the emerging smartphone market.
“Our view was that phones would take almost all of the mobile gaming market, mostly,” he Tweeted at the time.
As a result, Microsoft has focused all of its efforts on the more traditional home console market. We’ll see the fruit of those efforts soon, when Microsoft fully unveils Project Scorpio.

another fairly lengthy article about the Scorpio.

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/..._Project_Scorpio_and_its_brandnew_dev_kit.php

the more I read about the Scorpio, the more exciting I'm getting.

In hindsight, my bad luck with the original X1 and S worked out for the best, cuz the Scorpio seems to be such a far superior product......lol.

if anything, the Scorpio should have been the console they released 4 years ago instead of the original X1 - though, I'm sure, the tech wasn't there yet.

More likely, the S should have been what they launched originally instead of the OG X1. And the Scorpio should have been what they released last year as the console refresh to compete with the Pro.

regardless, the current focus of the Xbox division, with Spencer in charge, should have been there at launch 4 years ago.

things might have turned out far different.

Different platforms are making them think like PC devs.

It seems we are truly entering a different age of console development. Instead of singular console generations, incremental upgrades appear to be the wave of the future. From the sound of things, Xbox's Project Scorpio is going to be quite the step-up from the standard Xbox One. In speaking with Gamasutra, The Coalition's Mike Raynor talked about his experiences with the platform and how things have improved.
He said:
"When I first started working with Xbox One, I was a little bit disappointed; it kind of felt like we'd really taken a step back. And I've seen that evolve, and improve constantly since we've launched, but with what we're doing with Scorpio, it's now very pleasurable to work with.
From a developer standpoint, when you think about Xbox One, Xbox One S (with HDR) and now with Scorpio, a lot of development for us is similar to PC. And we kind of think of PC as kind of the ultimate platform, in terms of scalability and all the different targets that we have."
It seems as though the Xbox platform is really pushing the idea of iterative consoles, which aren't that much different than higher and lower levels of PC builds. And from a developer's perspective, it would seem to make things easier on them.
In other Scorpio news, it has been confirmed that the console will get its official reveal at E3 2017, which is rumored to include Red Dead Redemption 2 and Forza 6. If you plan on pre-ordering the console, you can head over to Amazon right now, and sign up for notifications.
