Thor's box office competition - Part 1

It's probably because they realized the mind-boggling awesomeness of Depp's performance is what people really wanted to see, so they just phoned in the story around it. The goal became less about telling a good story overall and more about just throwing as much Jack Sparrow at the audience in any given scene as it could bear. If they do a PotC 5, they'll probably just dispense with the story altogether and have Depp monologing for 2 hours. :D

Damn, you've inspired me to write fanfic retelling the sequels as Sparrow would tell it. You know he has a habit of making up stuff to enlargen his own reputation.

"But alas, I realized I ought to save the crew for it was my own fault and chained myself to the Pearl and went down with her."

Thor was ok and all (I rated it a 6/10) but I'm content to wait for the DVD. lol If I see any film multiple times this year it'll probably be Super 8.

I'm all about Super 8 right now it has that vibe..... just have to see it.

Yeah I'm a bit curious about Super 8.
Tho when I get the Thor dvd, I KNOW I'll have the WHOLE thing looping for a day or two. lol

Super 8 has Steven Spielberg already written all over it. I am expecting the following themes to pop up

- Family Issues
- Evil government authority (in the eyes of children)
- Child connecting with something preternatural/alien

I got that ET vibe. I expect the children to try and help whatever was on the train, once they get their video camera back. I expect the government to try and act in what they believe is in the better interest of the public and for the children to perceive them as evil. And I expect to see some kind of single parent home or broken home of some sort. This movie just reeks of frequent Spielberg themes. At least based on the trailer.

Anyways, I am not entirely surprised by a lot of the average reviews that are coming in regarding Thor. It had a pretty solid setup and amazing performances from just about everyone on the cast, but the ending left a lot to be desired. I think the director wanted to avoid the Superman Returns effect, by having a powerful hero that doesn't really show how powerful they are. In doing so, Thor is made out to be too powerful and the final fight just sort of stops short. Hopefully they do better next time around.

I'm surprised BOM hasn't updated with Tuesday's numbers yet.

I haven't gotten any vibe off of it. I'll see it sure(which is more than I can say for most non-comic book films this summer) but I'd not bet on me seeing it more than once in theaters at this point.

I saw Thor 3X in theaters and expect to probably do the same for the other CBM's this summer(as long as their worth it). In fact, I think Super 8 is the only non-CBM that I'm sure I'll see this summer. The rest just depend on how they play out.

Big names and all, I'm getting a "The Happening" vibe from Super 8 to be honest. While I'm sure it won't be that bad, I think it will land in "Cloverfield" territory. Something to watch but more hype than substance.

I'm very excited about Super 8. I have no idea why, but I kind of get a feeling like it'll be a live-action version of The Iron Giant.

Now THAT would be cool!
I know Spielberg had said he was tired of alien movies, but that would be cool.

Wouldn't have to be an alien. There's clearly a "government experiment gone wrong" component to it, so maybe the experiment is a super-powerful but confused thingamawhat'sit with a heart of gold that the kids can bond with or something.

:D I still haven't seen WALLIE. In an odd sort of way I want to see that.

11M for the weekdays and 130M by end of thursday is happening now. Yes!

It's only got to make $4,597,974 between today and tomorrow to get the 130M. Just under $2.3M a day average. Friday it beats TIH's domestic take.

Pirates of the Caribbean : On Stranger Tides has garnered a paltry 36% on Rottentomatoes.com, could that mean it's not going to hit Thor as hard as some may think?

Maybe not but it'll still be probably the biggest OW of the year so far.

Ya know, I love the series, but it just seems they're reaching with this last PotC. I'll see it eventually and even get the DVD since it's part of the series, but this I fear will be the last PotC.

I personally dislike the POTC because they should have ened the series after the last movie (which I thought was the worse of the series). IBut the really reason I hate POTC is because of all the cheesy wannabe Jake Sparrows and pirates I see at SCA wars!! I just want to slap them all for being tready fanboys and fangirls!

I haven't seen Fast Five, but considering what stinkers all the other ones are I am so amazed to see it have such a high rating on RT... They must of really gotten their **** together!
That being said, being on a budget as I am, I'd go so Thor again rather then take a chance on it.
That franchise is another in a seemingly endless list of current franchises that I just do not "get". (POTC, Transformers, Shrek, Jackass, Hangover) I'm so far removed from the mainstream right now that I don't even understand the explosion of things like Avatar and TDK. They were good....but...really...everyone had to go see them 10 times?

I saw the first FF movie and honestly can't remember much about it. No idea why it's so appealing. I will admit The Rock's charisma makes me want to rent it at least. And why anyone would line up to see the next POTC movie after that last one is beyond me. I thought bad movies effected the next one? Wasn't that supposed to be a "rule" somewhere? The first one was great...but how far can that good will last?

If Thor is anything, it's something I didn't feel like I'd seen it before. If FF is that unique, it didn't show in the trailer. Looked like the same old same old.

Fast Five is entertaining in sort of a heist flick with fast cars kind of way but it is still pretty silly. And I have no interest in a Justin Lin directed Terminator 5 starring 65 year old Arnold.

Also, Fast Five gets a huge ethnic demographic with its diverse cast. I imagine the Rio setting helped it do huge business in South America.

IF I want to see a hiest movie then I'd watch the Italian Job or Ocean's Eleven! IMO The F&F franchise sucks rocky mt oasters!
