Thor's box office competition - Part 1

Hey we don't need any of that, she's pretty cool man, different strokes for different folks :word:

I actually liked Fast Five, I'd give it a 7.5 but I think Thor was better hence the 9/10 in my signature.

OK maybe you like Fast Five, but please admit wasn't the safe thing the most incredibly stupid thing you've ever seen in a movie? I mean it was so stupid the MythBuster guys wouldn't touch it, because it would be a 30 sec episode.

I thought it was an awesome scene, but it certainly didn't belong in a film set in the real world, it wasn't believable AT ALL.

It's very well possible that Thor could have done better without the 3D. I have a feeling with the 2011 box office doing so terrible until the last few weeks, they may do away with 3D if GL and Cap don't do well.

The real litmus test will be Cars 2, if that doesn't do well it's over for 3D. 3D is already on the fritz after the huge lack of sales in 3D TV's, and the miserable sales of the Nintendo 3DS.

Honestly, even without the economic roller coaster due to a collapsed housing market, high energy prices, high food prices and fewer jobs, 3D was still ill-timed. HDTV saturation was still too low to try and spring a new technology on the public (I believe currently hovering around 65%). Many consumers only recently acquired an HDTV. Now, studios and electronics manufacturers want consumers to reinvest in costly televisions.

Post processing 3D doesn't help when it comes to films and television shows. Lastly, there is nothing dynamic about 3D. This is why Blu Ray adoption has been so slow even though it has been on the market for six years or so. The technology has to be compelling and that is usually based on content. DVDs were such a revolution because it meant no more having to rewind, you could instantly jump to a scene and there were things like special features. 3D does little to improve the experience, be it gaming or watching. Glasses certainly don't help. 3D seems pretty much dead in the water.

I haven't seen Fast Five, but considering what stinkers all the other ones are I am so amazed to see it have such a high rating on RT... They must of really gotten their **** together!
That being said, being on a budget as I am, I'd go so Thor again rather then take a chance on it.

I've seen Thor three times while I've only seen Fast Five once.

3 to 1, good, because I bet Thor is at least 3 times better!

Now that I think about it, I'm gonna change my rating of Fast Five to a 7/10.

I was only ever able to get halfway through the original F&F movie before shutting it off due to complete boredom. I'm just not interested in cars or car racing and can see hot women at home on my PC(just a mouse click away). And that's all I've ever seen or will see of the series.

I'm not really a big fan of racing either, but Fast Five had alot more fighting and stealing than actual racing and The Rock and Vin Diesel 's fight was awesome.

If we get a superhuman version of a fight like that between Thor and Hulk in the Avengers or possibly Thor and Skurge in Thor 2, my jaw will drop in amazement.

I saw something on Jimmy Fallen last night with a clip from a movie I don't recall the Actress right now but the Trailer ripped off the Chase scene of Banner in Incredible Hulk in Brazil.

EDIT wasn't Fallen it was Leno, with Jordana Brewster and Fast Five

That's just a scene or set piece though. I can get stuff like that divorced from the rest of the film shortly on youtube and skip all the rest of the junk in the movie.

Also, other than the 1st 2/3rds of The Rundown and Pitch Black, I've never seen either of these two guys do anything that made me want to keep watching them. Too bad, because both those initial outings of the two were quite good(except for the last 1/3 of the Rundown when it just loses all it's charm and becomes just a mediocre 'splode-fest).

I think that it will make over 200mil. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. Thor is doing fine but I personally still feel that Fast Five's run is more impressive because it doesn't have the 3D boost and it's a fifth in a franchise. Alot of people usually runaway from franchises when they get to this point but Fast Five is poised to be the biggest one yet (money wise atleast, I doubt it will sell more tickets than the first one)

And no I'm not trying to pit the two movies up against eachother, I'm just commenting on the boxoffice numbers.

That's because they were/are selling Rock vs Vin Diesel aka the poor man's Stallone vs Schwarzenegger. Take those two out and you have another mediocre (which in all reality it is) movie with laughable action sequences. Take those two out and it would make as much as 2F2F and Tokyo Drift.

In reality it's probably being viewed as the third of the franchise by most since no one bothered with two and three.

Impressive? Not in the very least.

Just saw POTC: On Strangers Tides......seriously might have been the worst movie I've actually finished without turning it off/leaving the theater. That said, it will still dominate opening weekend which is just sad.

Oh, cool. I was on the fence about watching it but I guess I'll just watch Thor again this weekend instead. :)

I mean I was never a fan of the sequels, I just liked the original, so if you like the whole series, you might want to check it out on DVD or something, but I highly suggest seeing Thor again this weekend. My best friend is the manager at the local theater so he manages to get me into the employee screenings and stuff, so I get to see most movies a few days before opening day and I get to see almost all of them for free, so I try and check everything out, but POTC was not even worth the social event of watching it at midnight in an empty theater with all of my old college buddies.

Ya know, I love the series, but it just seems they're reaching with this last PotC. I'll see it eventually and even get the DVD since it's part of the series, but this I fear will be the last PotC.

I didn't like the second and I never even bothered to watch the third, so I'm cool skipping this one too.

Well most of the people I saw it with were like me, the liked the first and didn't care for the sequels. These people didn't like it. The two people at the screening who liked the whole series enjoyed this one. They didn't love it, but they both said it was entertaining, so if you loved the series chances are you'll find some kind of entertainment in it.

I do have to admit Corpy, the Sword fights themselves get better with every film, but it seems the better the fight's get the stories seem to suffer in turn.

I'll probably fall in that category too since I love renaissance faires, and movies of the era.
On an average I've loved to look of all the films to date.

It's probably because they realized the mind-boggling awesomeness of Depp's performance is what people really wanted to see, so they just phoned in the story around it. The goal became less about telling a good story overall and more about just throwing as much Jack Sparrow at the audience in any given scene as it could bear. If they do a PotC 5, they'll probably just dispense with the story altogether and have Depp monologing for 2 hours. :D

Thor was ok and all (I rated it a 6/10) but I'm content to wait for the DVD. lol If I see any film multiple times this year it'll probably be Super 8.
