Indeed. It's pretty ironic that some fans misrepresent the overall criticism from the critics when the complaints these fans have are about the critics disliking the movie for the wrong reasons.

That in addition to that the critics have actually seen the movie, most of us fans haven't.

There's also been criticism for having stupid short blurbs in connection to a bad review, yet no one cares when a positive review has "Cavill looks great in the key outfit. Maybe that's enough." as the short version. It's pretty obvious that anything negative will be shunned and everything positive will be eaten up. These fans have less credibility than what they criticize.

But these critics, some of them still pine for S:TM. Go look at their reviews of SR which was pretty much a tribute to CR and a sequel to that universe. Tell me, how many Marvel films had to compete with their own legacy? This is just an example and not a bashing towards Marvel.

Batman, yet another that had to compete with its own legacy (Batman 89) but that film was followed up with terrible sequels. BUT, Batman didn't have a film like SR before Batman Begins.

With that said, much of the reviews are attributed to complaints such as pacing, lack of character development, and too much action. For a runtime MoS has, the film does go by pretty quick but too much action?? Hah! I only wish it had more action.

Wait, have you seen it?

Yeah this could very easily get a 'rotten' overall score...

To me, the implication here is that by going in the opposite way of SR it took the fun out...therefore, SR was fun. Maybe that's a stretch, but I don't know how else to interpret it.
Even though they invoked SR, I believe they were referencing the fun of the donner movies. Either way, many reviews have stated the humorless tone of the film regardless of what movies came before. This has long been a concern of mine with MOS.

I get the sense that this movie has a lot in common with Batman Begins from a thematic and tone perspective. The "Cream of the Crop" top critics on RT weren't too high on Begins either. I'm hopeful that MOS can salvage a good RT score on the strength of fan/blogger reviews.

Sounds like you have a cool family. Hopefully this speaks for the wider audience as well. I think enough time has passed where we can leave what's been done in the past and embrace a new vision for a new age, while still keeping the essentials intact. But again, some of the reviews are transparent in their downright unwillingness to do so.

I do, thanks. :yay:

I don't think there was ever a moment where any of us wanted to see Superman retired because we'd 'had our movies'. With the resurgence in superhero movies in the past decade, it's been more like, "When's Superman coming back?"

Christopher Reeve will always be my Superman. I grew up with him as the character, he was one of my favorite episodes of The Muppet Show when I was a kid. Then he went through all of these terrible things in later years and just became an even bigger superhero in real life than he was on screen. I was heartbroken when he died.

But I welcome a new Superman. It's long overdue. Henry Cavill looks fantastic as Superman from everything I've seen. That shot in the trailer of his fist in the ground, ready to take off? Omg, that was brilliant. You're wary, because you want it to be true to what you loved about the character, but you're not so stubborn that you're going to fall to pieces because they took the character forward.

In fact, when we saw the trailer in front of Star Trek, my mom and I were both joking about how the special effects have gotten just a little better since the previous movies. :oldrazz:

Why, Goyer, why? And of course I'm gonna blame Zack for the editing, and the studios for forcing the movie to be cut, and Nolan for not "reigning" in David. :/

Let's stifle the blame until it's actually rotten, huh? Which it won't be.

Can't believe some of you are monitoring these Critics review as an elections. Go see the movie this weekend and judge it for yourself. If you come out loving it or hate it you'll know where this movie is. Word of mouth is what got Avatar to the highest grossing film all-time.

Well, it's just something worth noting. I don't think most of our opinions will actually be affected, it's just jarring to have all this positive pre-release reception and now a more mixed reception from critics.

Wait, have you seen it?

Yes and a lot of the reviews baffle me. What moviegoers need to keep in mind -- this is a movie about SUPERMAN who goes by the name of Clark/Kal-El. As far as I'm concerned, they nailed it. I was one who was opposed to Henry Cavill from before he was selected until I saw the film. You forget he's an actor and you simply see SUPERMAN.

Well, that's good to hear. How's the story? Is it really glossed over for action? Or is that an invalid complaint, you think?

Bulleye!

I can easily see it getting a Rotten Score at this point. Not really rotten but like I said earlier, somewhere in the 55 - 69% range. First I was hoping for a final score in the later eighties and nineties. Then yesterday I lowered my expectations and had to hope for the low to mid seventies. But at this point i'm hoping it just stays fresh.

Thank you... your comment here just prove what I'm expecting... The focus of this movie is to make it feel like you were watching Superman in real life. I cannot wait to see this movie. The wait is killing me...

I get the feeling it'll definitely at least stay fresh.

Some do but I think the criticism has overall been specific to the traits of MOS. And even if it was more common I'd say the fans have their preconceived opinions on what MOS should be as well.

As for Marvel competing with it's legacy, that's pretty much because Marvel hasn't had any hugely successful movies in the past (TIH was compared to Ang Lee's movie though). They'll have to deal with it when they reboot something but right now they are in the process of creating something new, with heroes that haven't been exposed a lot before in this medium. One way it's a shame that Green Lantern failed is that it was something new and not a new attempt at something that's already done (which Hollywood does too often in general).

And in the end, if you make a good movie you'll survive the comparisons (talking generally as what's a good movie is decided on individual basis of course). Batman Begins got very good reviews (85% on RT). Some critics are saying that MOS is the best Superman movie yet, and they are then doing exactly the same, comparing it to the legacy.

When it comes to action, I want the amount of action that the rest of the movie can carry.

Avatar received incredibly positive reviews that surely played into its insanely strong WOM. It was an Oscar contender even. MOS isn't even approaching Fast 6 levels of acclaim according to critics.
