Finally put up my review after seeing it Tuesday. I feel like it is worth seeing in theaters and you will be entertained but it's almost like watching to different movies.

Goyer must have gotten the memo that most didn't appreciate his attempt at "humor" in the TDK trilogy so he didn't even bother with this one. Can't say I blame him.

Ha, yeah. I just came back from watching it and the only laugh all movie from the crowd was the "I just think he's kind of hot" line.

Hey showtime, where is the review

[BLACKOUT]
~~Truck in telephone pole
~~Young Clark heating door handle
~~He's Hot
~~Welcome to the planet
~~Done measuring *****

Got the laughs. Overall not a very humor filled film.

I just got back from the early 7:00 showing.

I didn't like it.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm opening my bottle of Johnny Walker Black and drink most of it.

The Joker character was "the fun" in TDK anytime he was on screen. He wasn't supposed to be amusing all the time but he was to me.

There was plenty of humour in the Dark Knight, but it was subtle and hidden within the dialogue. It was within the conversations and not really one-liners and sacrasm like Iron Man or somewhat slapstick like IM3.

The question is, can you make one of these videos with clips from Man of Steel?

I just got back from my 2nd viewing.

And now.... I've got some recanting to do from my original hatred spewed review....

And while wrapped in spoiler tags - it is still a non-spoiler review.

Man of Steel: The resolve of steel on a 2nd showing....

I sit here.... weird.

I'm just like the rotten tomatoes score on this damn movie. And no, it's not a flip-flop mentality on behalf of a notion to bend to public opinion, but rather........ idk it's just weird.

Tonight I saw MoS for a 2nd time and now that I've spent most of my day making 12 year olds cry via message board debates, I'm seeing the film in a different light.

And not a brighter one as this showing was in 3D as well. That stance has not changed. The 3D lends nothing. Pass on it if at all possible. I swear to you, that stance will not flip flop.

Anywho - most of the issues I debated today became heavily engrained in my mind because I got so riled up about them as I debated them. That being said - these viewpoints of mine have changed:

1) The side characters other than Lois and Jor-El. They do do more than I originally took in, but their roles are still limited. Credit should be given more to these performances. Christopher Meloni and Richard Schiff are the only two weak links in my honest opinion. And it's interesting that those two characters ended up sharing the same fate.

2) The fights and CGI Superman - This is the aspect that changed the most for me as I was watching with a much more keen eye than before. The graphics were much better than I remember from my first viewing. While still not perfect and still stand out as fake - they're more tolerable than I originally stated. The problem I have here isn't my usual ***** and moan about the lighting, but rather - no one can seem to figure out how to translate weight accurately in the digital realm.

3) It's better than Green Lantern. That was an unfair equivalent. The difference maker here is the lack of camp that GL had and the strong performances in the supporting realm in MoS.

4) The heart of this film is a little more evident but it's really little thumps here and there by side characters. But it's more than before.

Now -- all that said these issues remain and have been somewhat redefined and/or reenforced:

1) The entire build up to Superman centers on a quiet quiet Clark Kent. The problem I realized here is the very minimal dialogue he has AS Clark. As my friend pointed out, he's Superman the whole damn movie. He DOES Superman things but to me - there's more to him than just saving people and doing good. He should preach good as well. My problem is that Clark / Superman isn't so pronounced as he should be as a character. He's not bold, rich and outright in his conflicting with humanity. The Superman I want not only does good, but INSPIRES good. That's what was lacking for me. And no he doesn't have to be the boyscout scooping kittens out of the tree, but his character needs to do more than just do. He needs to inspire. He doesn't. That's the missing component from the character. And it's not a Donnerverse thing, or a Singer, or smallville - that's a comic book thing. And yes it's necessary and yes it can fit in this "real world." It's one of the best aspects of the character of Superman and right now it's missing. I can get over it because this is just the start and they do need things to keep it interesting. But I would have really loved just a taste of it.

2) The fights. Yes the action is awesome - but there's still a lack of emotion out of the fights. Mainly because there is nothing at stake. No characters that I care about are ever in any real jeopardy. Christopher Nolan knew this when he created Rachel Dawes in Batman Begins. The problem he encountered was that she was a boring character that no one gave a **** about and she had bad actresses portraying her. Here - there is nothing at stake during the fights. We all know he's going to save metropolis and Lois ain't dying. The threat of something detrimental happening needs to be done better. In all of the Nolan movies - there were things at stake. TDK had gordon's son, TDKR had Batman himself. MoS needs to grasp this aspect in the future.

3) Zod - I'm sorry. He does evil things. But up until a certain point of the movie - he's still not an evil enough character for me. A hero is best defined by his villain. And while it's leaps and bounds above former ones - the threat Zod presents against superman for a majority of the movie is quite out of proportion. It's odd that in a film the hero wins the first fight against his enemy... and then the 2nd. Zod is not booked correctly as a threat to Superman. Superman really needed to get his ass handed to him by Zod, not his henchwench or anyone else in the first fight. That's what creates drama and an investment in the final fight - which is why I didn't feel it last time. That said - by the end of the final fight - they get Zod and Supes where they need to be. My gripe is that it didn't happen sooner and expel more into interesting details on that conflict.

4) Zod in Superman's mind / Acid weed trip smoking sequence and the obvious cut scene involving Lois with the same. I'm not going into detail onto this one for spoiler reasons - but when you see it and are like "What the eff just happened?" You'll know what I'm talking about.

That's where we are. Steel holds up now that my expectations were adjusted properly. It's still not a perfect film. But it's better than I originally thought.

7.5 / 10 - It ain't no Batman Begins ;)

PS: it threw me that actor Alessandro Juliani who played Dr. Hamilton on multiple episodes of Smallville shows up here as a random army dude.

I need time to process it. To vaguely sum up: it feels like the other side of the coin of Superman Returns. All of the things Superman Returns got wrong, Man of Steel gets right. All of the things Man of Steel gets wrong, Superman Returns got right.

Thats actually one of the best and most accurate things I have seen said about this film.

oh. sorry. it's sad to hear that. but u can put your hope on the sequel. :D

Okay guys. Wow. Just got in 2 seconds ago. Going back up at the gates for a Mid-Night showing.

Lots going through my mind, so bare with me, it may be all over the place haha.

FRESH thoughts:

Henry Cavill: What an absolute TREAT Superman fans are in for. There were numerous times in the film where the small things mean BIG things. As Superman, he gives us a performance that made me smile in his demeanor and the direction he has takin is flawless. His interviews saying how he went to the source material is all TRUTH. He embodies everything Superman.

His Clark Kent is a very interesting motive for the sequel. More to be explored with Clark Kent and you'll see why.

Amy Adams: Outstanding. Loved her role and loved the way she interacted with Perry White first and foremost.

You really bought into her when it came to how snippy and close to the action Lois Lane could be. Adams was the right choice for the role and played it well.

Michael Shannon: Interesting. Not what I expected. Zod wasn't as menacing as I thought he was going to be. I thought he was going to literally be a horror character. Not the case. They gave him vision and and the determination as a General for his home world.

Critics were correct with the pacing issues. Though you could tell it was edited within the scope of the run-time, the imaginative story and new elements to the Superman mythos make you forget about it.

The way the action and visuals make you realize what's at stake and the very different imagining of the story, it puts you at the edge of your seat.

Off the top of my head, I thought of atleast 3-5 popular story arcs in the comics intertwined into Man of Steel. Refreshing to instantly connect with a story arc that you immediately think back to. Snyder does pull from the comics.

Overall, very happy. The characters are underdeveloped in their own right but that's all due to the overwhelming circumstance Superman is forced into and I feel it totally worked for a SUPERMAN MOVIE.

The big spoiler didn't bother me none at all and following Clark through this journey, he has no choice and only acted accordingly to this Superman being told in front of our eyes. The audience reacted to it in a positive manor and got claps at the end.

As a critic, I can see the holes. As a SUPERMAN MOVIE I've always wanted? Boy, does it deliver in a huge way. I'll be seeing it multiple times and all fans alike shouldn't be concerned. It is fun, huge and action packed.

Also, I didn't feel the Dark Knight Trilogy vibe to it. Nolan has his moments, but it's certainly not even CLOSE to being as grim as the Batman franchise. It's a whole level of destruction.

If I had to point out a negative, and it kind of bummed me out, is Hans Zimmer's soundtrack. It certainly didn't stick out the way I thought it would. It could be that the action and edge of your seat destruction lures you away from the score in many senses but the second viewing may tell another story.

That's it for now, guys. Off to the second viewing then I can get you a final grade when it all sinks in.

GO OUT AND SEE IT!

Wait a couple more days and watch it again. When I saw Batman Begins for the first time, I didnt like it. But when I understood what Nolan was trying to do, it was like a vail was taken off my face an I saw a great film for what its was.

I haven't seen the film yet but that is the vibe I have been getting based on the reviews.

In time iI verymuch expect this film to split the fanbase, in the same way SR did

Oh, and my audience got a few chuckles. Not laughs, chuckles in some points. Very few, as everyone has stated who seen it. You really have to connect on a different kind of humor and see Cavill pull off some movements or facial expressions that won't stick out, but it's there and people saw it. I got a quick chuckle in some of the performance.

The "He's kind of hot line" got a laugh.

wow

seems that critics are the only ones with issues in regards to MOS. seems like fans and the general audience will love it though.

gonna go see to the midnight showing in a few hours, so i'll let you know my thoughts

The pacing in the film is atrocious, and kills a lot of the films emotional moments.

I really enjoyed ur take on this. I just got back myself and I absolutely loved it. Its Snyders movie so I cant really compare to what Nolan did. I thought Cavill did an awesome job and he showed he cared for the people. The US army caused more damage than he did. I loved that it was more grounded in reality. I felt Lois was perfectly played by Adams and her helping Superman out was more than Kidder did in the donnerverse. She was feisty and smart just like Lois from Smallville. My rating is 9.5/10 with .5 missing because I wanted more Costner moments with Clark

Just got back from my advanced screening. Letting the movie marinate for awhile, I'm not ready to do a full review. I enjoyed it and thought it was good. I was concerned about some of the negative reviews calling it "humorless". But there's quite a bit of scenes the audiences laughed at.

Nice report Tra-El. Thanks!

I hope everyone enjoys the midnight showings tonight. I can't do midnight movies anymore, so I will be seeing it tomorrow around 12 noon. And I cannot wait! I read some Golden Age Superman comics today just to get myself in the mood.
