My expectations for MOS werd tamped down as soon as Snyder was announced as director. I liked his DAWN OF THE DEAD and I really love 300, but WATCHMEN and SUCKER PUNCH were not his best work IMHO. So before the trailers, especially that 3rd trailer with the Zimmer score hit, I decided that at best I was getting a live action DC animated movie, and there had'nt been any of the Superman one of those I have'nt liked. So that's why I believed before even seeing it I wouldprobably have a good time. The release of trailers 3,4 and the Nokia trailer raised my hopes that it would be a more in depth Superman film. If it aint, oh well. A film that establishes Supes as a being with power of biblical proportionsis still going to be good for the character, pop culture wise at any rate.

Trailer 4 actually started to concern me :(

At this point, if the movie is 1/3 as good as trailer 3 makes it out to be, I will be almost happy.

The thing is, it's the opposite. Weren't they sitting on MoS for a while? I can't see it being a rushed job. They had time for reshoots if needed. And then we hear that the sequel is being "fast tracked".

They always say that. They said that before Green Lantern was released, aswell. They do that to show the audience that they're confident in the movie (even in case they're not, but have shoved out lots of money for the production and marketing already).

So, summarising most of the RT reviews I've looked through, (including some of the positive ones):

A visually impressive (if not saturation-muted) blockbuster, without a great deal of soul.
Cavils superman is a bit bland without a lot of personality, and lane is a bit pointless, but Zod is mega awesome and steals all his scenes. (Costner+Crowe are good too).
The whole end hour is a relentless action extravaganza which may or may not get a big Transformerey depending on your patience or love for such things.

I'd imagine that it willl EASILY make enough for a sequel (and fingers crossed, a Justice Movie) but I think the early reviews may have hurt its final takings a lot, and the big spectacle of the end half may hinder its rewatchability. (Is it my imagination, or are people just going through negative reviews on RT and insulting all the reviewers in the review feedbacks?)

So, I saw the movie last night.

If anyone wants to know what I thought about certain aspects (without getting spoilerly), ask away.

What reassures me is that most of the geeks I follow loved it: Drew McWeeny from Hitfix, Collider Frosty from Collider, the guys at AICN (not just Knowles, because he tends to like a lot of things), etc

I don't think there's a consensus or even a majority regarding Henry's blandness.

How did you rate it? Where amongst your favourite CBMs?

I've heard a few negatives, but yeah, the vast majority was praising him, I think.

4/5

I was leaning towards a 3.5, but the last twenty minutes or so are nearly pitch perfect and instantly shot up. I'll say that the last scene in the film is probably one of my favorite last scenes in any comic book movie.

If I had to rank it amongst the rest though, for me it would probably come in towards the bottom of my top 10 CBMs.

I trust you because Taxi Driver and because Jesse Pinkman.

I have a feeling that a lot of people (critics mostly) are not down with the seriousness of a movie about a guy with red boots and a cape who can fly. Since Marvels movies, Avengers at the latest, they seem to want this tone for the whole genre, apart from maybe Batman. They look at it like "Its a silly funnybook film, so it should be funny and wink at the audience all 2 minutes". Its almost as if they want the director to say "Yeah, I know its stupid. Lets have some fun with it."

I, for one, am super happy about the serious and sombre tone DC embraces with Man Of Steel, which follows the Dark Knight Trilogy. For me, you loose a lot of tension and a lot of drama when you go too far in the Marvel direction. I like all Marvel movies, don't get me wrong, but since they are so funny and light, I NEVER feel fully immersed in the world of the movie. When I watch BB/TDK/TDKR/Watchmen, I am IN the movie and I feel everything so immediately.
No matter what people say about TDKR... it was the most intesne movie going experience in my life and I see a lot of movies in the theatre! That was exactly because they took it all super serious! I feared for every character in this movie, like I fear for a true person! Marvels funny take will never achieve that for me!

I seriously hope that MOS will be everything I hope it to be and that DC continues with that tone.

The thing is, aiming for a serious and sombre tone is all fine, but if you fail in the executions of those goals, your movie will become a parody.

Saying that the critic hates it becuase 'it doesn't wink at the audience every two minutes' is just silly. Almost all of them laid out a reasonable argument on what they thought are the flaws of the movie.

Hey it made your top 10 so that's good

It's encouraging hear you liked it. Do you feel this might be a film with a high rewatchability? I know you've only seen it one but do you feel you would pop it in again on blu ray alot?

how does snyder's watchmen have a better rt rating lol

while i loved watchmen i can understand why people didn't

mos by all the fans here who have seen it seems like it doesn't deserve the harsh criticism

The irony that this was supposed to be a new Snyder and it may actually end up being worst reviewed than both watchmen and 300.

^ To be fair people didn't go to 300 with skyhigh expectations or preconceptions, and Watchmen had the advantage of being ambitious. This isn't to say MOS isn't ambitious, it's just not an adaptation of the most highly acclaimed GN ever.

I find the criticism of the "transformey" action a bit strange. Didn't all of these critics love The Avengers? The last 40 minutes or so were quite transformey to me.
