From DarkHorizons-For all its strengths and weaknesses, this is a Superman film unlike any that have come before it. In fact, the name "Superman" is only referenced once in the entire film. While it's not the masterpiece many were no doubt hoping for, "Man of Steel" is a satisfying experience. It also succeeds at giving audiences something they haven't had in long time; a reason to be optimistic for Superman's cinematic future. "Man of Steel" didn't need to be perfect, it just needed to be good enough to start a franchise, which it is.

Off topic: I hate your avatar, I've been marathoning Person of Interest and now I can't picture anyone else playing Batman ever again

I wish Caviezel could play Batman, but I think he's too old. :csad:

I know your pain.

If I have the power to crush your hope with words on a message board - you seriously need to reevaluate you ability to think and hope independently.

I need to better at presenting myself. I am not your enemy. I enjoyed reading you review. I not cutting my wrist or anything like that. I am much stronger than that believe me. I am more concern on the movie's success than anything. I just want to see movie do well. That is all.

My favorite movie this year was Star Trek Into Darkness, which has had virtually every blogger in screaming-into-the-heavens conniptions for weeks now.

But screw them. I loved the movie. Saw it 3 times. Everyone I know outside internet-bizarro-world has loved it, and a few of them have been Star Trek fans since the original series first aired.

You make up your own mind. Worst thing you can do is let someone else decide that for you.

(my dad loved John Carter too)

Yup. That's how I feel about some of my favorite movies. You should never apologize for liking something, just like you should avoid berating someone else who may dislike it.

^ I read something about the writer getting ideas from the internet. Let's hope for MOS2 it's more personal. Though I might be wrong.

I still hold out hope (especially b/c of John Nolan and POI) for a Kingdom Come one-off movie with Caviezel as Bats, Jon Hamm as Supes and Bridget Regan as WW. God I love Alex Ross.

*internet high five*

:highfive:

I loved the latest Star Trek movie too...only been able to see it twice so far....and I was there in the 60's for the original run. I've yet to understand this obsession some have with Rotten Tomatoes.

Recently I've disagreed with RT on John Carter, on Star Trek Into Darkness, on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey... and over time I've come to disagree with TDKR's high rating. That's four recent major blockbusters. I find I often don't align with critics on superhero movies and fantasy movies, because I have totally different criteria for those movies than they do.

EDIT: Oh, and I liked "Oz the Great and Powerful" and "Jack Reacher" as well. I disagree with RT more than I thought I did!

I don't understand it completely either. The top 10 highest grossing films of all-time domestically, 9 out of 10 of those the audience disagreed with the critics by small and large margins... so there you have it.

As long as the audience loves it, whom this movie is made for anyway, who really cares what a paid movie critic thinks or says? But beloved fans will take the RT rating to heart instead of doing the film some real justice -- by going to the theater and seeing it regardless of what the reviews are like.

The realism is not the concern, the lack of character is. And no, I'm not talking about the big blue boyscout specifically (that is there in faint shades). What the problem is the very transparent weak amount of character within Clark / Supes alltogether.

I think this film main objective is to erase all other film incarnations of the character. That's why there's so much focus on the action. I hope characterizations and development gets better with sequels.

At least the little bits we've seen of it in the trailers take the character in the right direction, imo.

Still, I think the seed is there for something very special and great.

Well then you flatter my writing ability with it's percieved potential to bring down Box office.

Although -if anyone asked me - i'd tell them to spend their hard earned money on "This is the End" this weekend and go to Man of Steel on $5 Tuesday.

But even then it would be moot. The marketing for this movie and blind WOM has already did it's job.

From Almost Nerdy: It’s a script that does Superman right by showing us just how powerful he is but also balancing it well enough to let us know that he’s not without feeling, by bringing Superman down to a human level, allowing audiences to really feel for someone with that much power. Overall, the admiration they have for this iconic character is pretty obvious and that makes the movie that much more enjoyable. It’s definitely worth a watch in theatres and if you have the extra cash to dish out for 3D and/or IMAX, go for it. I’m not the largest proponent of either format, but they make very good use of it in this movie, but that’s just one man’s opinion.

And yet another filmblog/geek blog gives it high marks. Could this be made mainly for the existing fans?

Superman has been around for 75 years. He's a comic book adapted presence. There's been hundreds on top of hundreds of comic books ranging from each era to where it's impossible to know his entire back-story word for word. There isn't one take on Superman. There isn't one way. There's been plenty of character personalty shifts and each era has them with hundreds of different writers.

The fans simply remember their favorite incarnation of Superman, and claim it to be the ONLY way when in reality, it isn't. It's a close-minded approach that hurts the character in new adaptions such as Man of Steel.

As for the big spoiler mentioned, to me, Superman isn't about making the right decisions ALL the time because he simply, can't. It's how he responds to big decisions or maybe mistakes that make him Superman to me. There's more to him than meets the eye.

Some fans should really allow change to their favorite adaption and enjoy the story of what makes him tick rather than being upset with a decision made that doesn't connect with their view of a 75 year old character.

As I said, it's easy for me to say. I look at Supes to where I'm OPEN to the fact to add different dimensions to the character and be open minded. He'll always be Superman at the core no matter what but I don't expect EVERY action to be flawless.

What poni boy posted makes the greatest superhero off all time, look like a complete coward.....
all to hide his identity.

That goes against the very core of superman.

I can't emphasize this enough:

Iron Man 2 - 73%, Certified Fresh, Average Score: 6.5
Man of Steel - 57%, Average Score: 6.4

Expectations are everything.

I like the new Star Trek even thought is basically a retread of its predecessor. I still think TDKR doesn't quite deserve it RT rating.

the negative reactions to this movie is getting out of proportions! it's like the movie did not even get anything right! sure it has flaws but they are so minimal that I don't think anyone could hate the movie. to be honest the great and good things in the movie overshadows them.

Ugh I can't believe I live in a world where "we'll fix it in the sequel" is a viable selling point for a movie

I'm finding this so hard to believe. It's early days... but still.

IDK about that. Batman Begins did a hell of a job erasing former (BF / B&R) perceptions of the character. Hell - the TDK Trilogy has done a better job at lowering the amount of BAM! POW! SNICKT! ideals than Burtons did.

Same with Star Trek 09. Focused on the characters and making them the stars of the film. Not the explosions.

I will post my well-thought out review somewhere probably on this forum not long after I see the film. So then I will know if I agree with you or not.

First of all, if you actually look at some of these "negative" reviews, on their actual site, they're rating it B- or C+, 2 stars out of 4, things of that nature, which to me doesn't equate to a rotten rating.

But more importantly, I think this is a way for critics to stand up to what they see as a trend of the darker, more somber superhero movie which to them is always gonna make a movie about a comic book terrible, no matter it's true quality. To them, it has to be silly or else, especially something like Superman.

Feel free to PM it to me as well because most likely it'll get lost in the mix and I won't get to see it.
