Avengers isn't really any smarter than Transformers.

Oh, it wants to be. Marvel fanboys think it is...but it really isn't.

They both are popcorn blockbusters that end in hour long action sequences.

For me, as a cinephile, what was bizarre is all the folks last year who acted like Avengers not only was the best comic book film of all time, but the second coming of cinema...that Joss Whedon was brilliant, revolutionary filmmaker up there with the all-time great directors. The truth is that the general audience enjoyed Avengers for the same reason they enjoyed Transformers movies...as a mindless action film. Explosions! CGI HULK! Dumb jokes! Just replace Optimus with Hulk and it is the same thing. Transformers isn't high art. Neither is Avengers.
I disagree. I don't know anyone who thinks Avengers is high art, and I do not think it is the best cbm of all time, but it certainly is not the crapfest Transformers was. Popcorn blockbusters that end in hourlong action sequences describe a great number of movies(it sounds like MOS is one of these too). I had no clue what was going on in the Transformers action sequences and stopped caring especially since the main characters were completely uncompelling. Avengers at least had heroes you could root for. Explosions and dumb jokes go with almost every action movie. Even the Dark Knight series.

Touche.I just thought it was pretty obvious and they would agree with me.

Eh, it's in the eye of the beholder, really. I think TA had obviously terrible cinematography, but I never dared say that in there.

+1.

Or TDK, or TDKR, or TASM, or any movie in its own forum respectively. Standard Hype Practice.

As much as I love the Avengers, I still regard it as a kiddy movie, while I look much more serious at the DC movies as far as Batman, and most likely MOS, as a more adult oriented movie. I much more prefer the more adult aspect then the kiddy, and this is the reason I am sooo glued on MOS. Can't wait till next Thursday, have 8 people going with me, and on Saturday I have another 8 going with me! :)

It's Disney.. it's a brand for Kids and Family Friendly, so don't expect to see 'dark or realistic battles'... in fact, I am sort of glad that WB's going the 'not so kid friendly' and more 'realistic' approach compared to Disney's Avengers approach. This would give us two completely different flavour.. .both are good in their own ways, but seeing too much of one or another would be tiring, and boring...

Well, I guess I know what you're saying. They're using the Alexa Arri and perhaps they should've played a bit more with the grain and resolution. Look at Oblivion for example; digital camera and it looks film-like. I think what you're saying is that there's too much clarity in the images. Which may work on TV but with movies, the DoP needs to rethink their approach.

I actually prefer the 'absolute clarity' in movies.. the clearer, and saturated and true color the movie is the better... i don't like grainy movies.. even if it's for artistic purposes... but that's me...

I think it's easier to do CGI effects when your picture is grainy to begin with.. it's easier to hide shoddy work...

I got you. Well, it all has to do with how popular the character is and how succesful his movie was. You won't get flayed in the Ghost Rider, Catwoman and Green Lantern threads.

More stuff

I was at this screening as well, and unfortunately I did not enjoy it as much as OP. Don't get me wrong, it is a technically well made movie, and there is plenty of action, but there seemed to be something missing. I was hoping they would go for the lighter tone of a movie like The Avengers, but it felt a lot more like Superman starring Batman's mood. I guess I have too much affinity for TAS and the Donner films, or maybe I don't relate well to Synder films. However, there are some great moments and it is definitely worth seeing. I just think I got my expectations up too high.
I'd give it a B or a B-. If you want some baromters on my movie taste, Dark Knight - A, Avengers - A, Iron Man 3 - C+, Star Trek 2 - B+

To answer some of the questions:
Cavill's got the look and attitude of Supes, but they don't give him much n the way of dialogue, which was odd. I think he could really blossom in a sequel, kid's got potential.

No hint for a sequel, but I think it's a forgone conclusion.

The first hour felt a lot like Batman Begins, and I enjoyed it a lot.

Michael Shannon was a bright spot as Zod. Really good performance.

"I was at the SF screening as well. I loved the opening of the movie, had issues with the next 40min. but once General Zod arrives on Earth it's just massive destruction."

Saw an advanced screening of #ManOfSteel meh it's alright, too Sci-Fi for my standards, very Star Wars storyline like.

All the same guy:
The cgi specifically stood out to me. Nothing seemed too flashy and it was all seamlessly done. There was also a lot of casual cgi usage comparable to hologram displays in many recent movies like Iron Man 3 but it was a really unique alternative that didn't show off. I saw it in 3D and although it added great casual depth to the footage I wonder if I will like it in 2D better to better appreciate the cinematography which was great. It was not as distracting as in most other movies now a days which I liked a lot. Zack Snyder really did a great job and showed a new side I personally think that I really appreciated. No, there was no over usage of slow motion if there was any at all. 8.3683/10 personal rating.

Compared to other superman movies I was really pleased. It seemed more focused on, "this is a good movie and it's about superman." Opposed to "this is a superman movie that's good" if that makes sense. It had a feel similar to the Dark Knight series where it just felt real. Even with the characters having superpowers it never felt over the top. There was a significantly positive lack of one liners unlike recent superhero movies cough cough avengers cough cough but there was a few good laughs for good reasons. To me, the Avengers really captured how I picture a comic book movie to be, although I feel as if Nolan is herding a new version of superhero movies that seem a bit more plausible. I really hope he stays on for more DC movies because he's on a roll.

I was really pleased with (Shannon's) performance. He was honestly perfect for the role and you even kind of almost feel for the dick at one point. He's a good villain because he's not 100% bad. Albeit he's like 92% but you get the point. This is one of his roles to remember. Almost as good as his role as Frankie Lombardo in Kangaroo Jack.

I think it did great. I loved how they told his origin story especially, but you're going to like the story I think. There MIGHT be one plot hole that I need to discuss with someone to decide whether or not it is but I didn't have the time to do so yet. I can't tell you what it is because It would include a spoiler, although not a major one. The context is that it involves a potential way they could have solved the conflict so even if it is a "valid" plot hole it wouldn't be very damaging at all. I would love to discuss it once you've seen it and you may not even catch the hole as the people I was with didn't.

(How does it compare to the Dark Knight Trilogy? As good as?)

Not THAT good but it is very good. I wouldn't say it's nearly as unique as the Dark Knight Trilogy but it's worth being compared to I suppose. It's EASILY my favorite Superman movie. I didn't know until recently that Nolan only basically had pre-production influence but you can sense his touch. Although it really was great for Snyder and showed his skills and I was weirdly proud of him.

The score was a subtle complement to the movie that really fit and it was cool to see the continuity in the epic scenes' scores and the dramatic slower scenes. It felt a TINY bit repetitive at points but I can easily see people disagreeing with me.

I saw Man of Steel tonight. I'll have all of Henry Cavill's babies now. Please and thank you.

Stuff

But I will confirm that my skull imploded from this movie. And in a good way. Henry Cavill was the correct choice for this role, and Zach Snyder was also the correct director. Also, I want to hug Hans Zimmer, because the score is something i'm definitely buying next week when it's released.

PS: Michael Shannon is a lunatic. A LUNATIC. I'll always have a special place in my heart for Terrence Stamp's Zod, but Shannon killed it in this movie.

Nice to see Snyder getting the dues in some of these reactions.

Snyder deserves this. I hope this movie soars. Only thing I'm scared of is the random complaints about the story.

@st3phani
Just got back from a advanced screening of "Man Of Steel" it was interesting and cute, but not my type of movie.

Maybe its my lack of sleep but 'cute' made me laugh.
