Damn. I still haven't watched the film.

I don't think anyone has denied that. It's just that it's a very close second to writing/performance. So it's importance is fairly significant, in spite of not being the highest priority. You're right, his appearance does tie into his personality and serves as a great visual metaphor for the sort of threat he represents to Batman. But I think his appearance is secondary, like the Joker's skin being perma-white: it could weaken the character, depending on how he's portrayed, or it could end up not being an issue, as was the case in TDK.
Perma-white is not comparable at all. That was a detail, a reason for Joker's appearance, but the Joker still looked like the Joker. The white face, the red lips, they were all there. You're right, his appearance does tie into his personality and serves as a great visual metaphor for the sort of threat he represents to Batman. I wonder if anyone would have been bothered if Two-Face would have been a lumbering giant in TDK. Played by a good actor who totally dwarfs Bale.
And if Nolan had put him in Riddler-green suit. Or would we not have minded because he acted so well.
See, I would argue that it's like saying that the Joker can still capture the spirit of the character without the perma-white face. There's a considerable difference.
I really want to infract everyone that says "camera trickery" or some version of it. Just sayin...![]()

That height difference is in the wrong direction, unfortunately.See, but this is irrelevant, because the actors have a two inch height difference--negligible at best.

This Bane has the mask that is loosely based on his comic appearance but not his most defining attribute; his size. Unless they do something to make him look bigger he is unrecognisable.
People use it quite often. Haha.
Nolan said "more tactical and less sexy". I don't think she be wearing any type of leather at all.
Well, considering very little else resembles his comic counterpart then I don't know what I'm supposed to recognise. You can't seriously tell me that just because he's the same height as Batman you are completely unable to recognize him.

You got it wrong. I wasn't talking about the perma skin. Like I said, imagine a Joker without the white face paint and red lipstick. Would that be acceptable as long as they capture the spirit of the character?
I don't know about you but I can spot a height difference of two inches quite easily, providing that both postures are equal. But two inches nonetheless. If you're more than five feet away, you'd probably estimate they're the same height.
I think if somebody showed me a picture of Hardy Bane and said "Who's this?" I'd be confused. If they said "Which Batman villain is this?" I think I'd probably say Bane.
For me, Bane having a South American accent is pretty important. It would be like having a James Bond movie, where Bond has a regular American accent. It just doesn't suit the character properly.

And he's not the same height as Batman, he's shorter.
Bane to the general audience is "that big, strong guy with the mask." Show them the promo pic of Hardy and they'll see a big, strong guy with a mask. Show them the spy pictures and then they'll say "Okay, maybe he's not huge, but he's still that strong guy with the mask."
