The Dark Knight Rises Tom Hardy as Bane

Am I the only one amused at the thought that Hardy will likely have a better Batman-physique than Christian himself? :o

Hardy's body type is far too stocky for Batman. But then again Bale's bird-like skeleton isn't ideal either.

His "bird like" frame looked perfect as Batman/Wayne with 210 pounds on it in Begins. IMO

But I agree that when he is slender his neck perches more and the adams apple starts becoming more noticeable thus giving the bird kind of look you're referring to.

He looked stocky when he was that heavy, which is typical of people with small frames who put on a lot of muscle. He actually looks better when he is slimmer, but that is wasted as soon as he puts on the Batsuit.

Well thats somewhat a matter of opinion as to when he looks better (slimmer vs stocky).

Personally I think he looks way better as Wayne/Batman when he was stocky. His frame is small but nowhere near as small as Hardys for example who looks incredibly tiny in height when he goes on gains. Christian Bale on the other hand when weighing 200-210 still looked relatively tall and bulky at the same time. So it worked for me.

Mainly due to the filled out face more than anything.

Hardy is short, but he doesn't have a small frame. His shoulders have always been wide. The combination of shortness and large bones makes him stocky, but for Bale his small bones combined with his height does him no favours, he still looks 'small' even when he has a lot of weight, which makes him stocky in a different way.

Just look at the recent pictures of Cavill, only a half inch taller than Bale, for someone with a larger bone structure.

Regardless Hardy still looks way smaller in height than Bale ever did in Begins, especially with more mass on him.

Going back to the point that I don't think the mass on Bale looked as bad as you're making it out to be. I know its really a matter of opinion because to me he looked great in Begins in both weight and height it wasn't a detriment other than for those who may want a slimmer Wayne/Batman.

I'm aware of that I'm just saying that adding muscles to an already short individual doesn't do him any favors in looking taller.

Something that didn't happen to Bale IMO when he added on all that weight. It was better that his shoulders weren't to wide as it still kept the effect that he was relatively tall.

I hate be the newbie asking dumb questions, but how do I add a signature?

Wide shoulders can make you look taller, provided you are actually quite tall already.

My dad is 6'0 tall and 260 lbs. He has broad shoulders. People think he looks taller, not shorter.

Bale in Begins was perfect Batman/Bruce size in my opinion. When he rolls up in the Lamborghini, he looks like a perfect Bruce Wayne. When he's in that bat-suit, his size looked perfect to kick criminals asses. I really didnt get that feeling from DK.

I've experienced the complete opposite.

Strange as 6'0 with wide shoulders with a lot of muscles tends to shrink someone in terms of height appearance. I'm talking from personal experience in this case and based on some of my other Water Polo buddies in high school.

My mom would constantly tell me that I looked way smaller in height when I weighed around 185-200 around Water Polo season. I was already 6'0 feet and my shoulder width is pretty wide. So I guess frame plays into it.

As for your dad it really depends what kind of weight he has. If its mainly muscle its really strange that he looks taller. The only time I've seen someone look taller because of weight was because its mainly just a sedentary stock along with fat. Width in the waist area along with the bigger arms can make someone thats 6'0 tall, taller.

But anyone with a V frame and a wide shoulder width who is mainly just packed with muscles generally doesn't tend to look taller based on my experience. A lack of shoulder width would most definitely help in looking taller. Large width around the shoulder area completely grabs ones attention detracting from that persons height.

Once you pass 6'2 though shoulder width doesn't really matter as much, in fact it works to your advantage.

Agreed.

Hardy is plenty big enough. If he was 6'4 and still looked that big people wouldn't complain. And they're obviously going to make him look taller than Bale in the movie.
Seriously. With some lifts and a foot stool they got at Bed, Bath & Beyond they managed to made Gandalf dwarf Frodo in Lord of the Rings. Honestly, I don't see Hardy's height being particularly important.

I don't see Nolan approaching it in that fashion. Anyone that's watched the entire behind-the-scenes of the LOTR trilogy will tell you how absolutely meticulous they were in achieving that effect. Somehow I doubt Nolan would dedicate so much of his resources to it.

I'd bet there will be very minimal alterations to Tom's actual size.

I was thinking the exact opposite.

Nolan loves the practical stuff. Hell, the man had an actual semi rigged to flip over instead of opting for CGI.

He could have gone with miniatures as well but insisted on having an actual truck do it.

I'm with Boom, the man loves his practical effects. Hallway fight scene in Inception anyone?

I realize that. But Jackson went through tremendous lengths to maintain that illusion throughout the entire production. Often he'd have to utilize different tricks from scene to scene, and also it depended on how he chose to shoot them.

That's quite a ways different from Nolan and his featured money shots. Yes, they are logistically complicated and require calculated measures. But it lasts for one scene or one shot.

Hardy looks big enough to break Batman in a million pieces, which is the general idea right?

Making Hardy a few inches taller is not the same thing as making Ian McKellen look double the height of Elijah Wood.

For this movie, it really would be as simple as utilizing platform shoes and camera tricks. No need for three-foot stunt doubles. No need for blue screen. In comparison to what needed to be done with LoTR, adding a few inches to Hardy is a walk in the park.

Like I've said before, we have no idea what Nolan's plans for Bane are. He could very well leave Hardy's height alone. But I'm personally inclined to think they'll make Hardy taller.
