Venom Venom's Box Office Thread

The fact that it will rival the box office of Spider-man: Homecoming despite Venom's considerably smaller budget is proof positive that Venom is connecting with more than just previously-existing fans. Venom's name recognition accounts for some of the early buzz, but the film is obviously standing on its own merits with audiences.

This, for sure

I think we're officially past the point where people can say Venom has a wide appeal, has a big fan base, etc. People are clearly liking this film for what it is, and this is in no way a situation like SS. There's been virtually no change in the narrative/opinions with Audiences -- they generally liked it when it came out, and they still feel the same. This looks like a rare case where people genuinely saw/got past critic reviews, and realize it's actually a good film for what it is and set out to be

Agreed. People are digging this film. It's a monster and will be the most profitable Spidey movie for Sony since the Raimi movies. Remember with the Raimi films, Sony had merchandise profits also. So those were more profitable in the end. But since they sold those merch rights, by far most profitable.

What was Sony thinking by selling spider-man merchandising rights back to Marvel?

The studio was in dire financial straights, so they were thinking of staying afloat at the time. Much like Marvel was thinking back in the 90s when they sold all those film rights to various studios.

I'm no Alanis Morrissette but that's pretty darn ironic.

It's only surpassing Spider-Man 2 at this point. I'll laugh hard if it surpasses the first movie.

John Campea makes a good point at 5:20

Doesn't surprise me in the least bit. I've been saying this for years. Nerds have and will always be in the minority when it comes to box office.

I knew Venom could be a success if they just treated it like an isolated Jekyll and Hyde type Elseworlds story. Far exceeded my expectations though.

Lmao this is incredible. I'm betting they're going to have a chinese star in Venom 2.

Prepare yourself to

I’m honestly not surprised at Venom’s success. I’ve been hyped since the second trailer. Since they announced Tom Hardy as the lead. Since they announced the guy who did Zombieland is doing Venom.

I read the Venom comics and that proved to me that Venom as a character has enough appeal on his own sans Spider-Man

When will it get to $800m?

Wow this movie has out grossed all the X movies including Deadpool and is biting the heels of Homecoming.

I wish I could find the discussion I had with someone online that laughed at the idea of this movie even making money, let alone out grossing the other bigger comic book movies.

The guy I debated was so dismissive and damn near called me stupid for even entertaining the idea that this could do well.

To be fair though; the idea did sound awfully stupid back then.

I think that a lot of people were craving a Venom movie and audiences were very curious about it. I wonder how the sequel will do.
