Exactly. Everything that happened had repercussions on either Bruce or Batman.
TDK was like an experiment. The Joker was the independent variable. Bruce/Batman and Harvey/Two Face were the dependent variables. We saw how two similar "heros" reacted when Joker interfered with them, mainly by killing their girl. Batman used it to push himself to defeat Joker, Harvey went crazy from it.
This is more my thinking, and Nolan's too if you believe some of his quotes at the time.
The Dark Knight was definitely NOT the Joker's story. He didn't have that much screentime and his character didn't have any kind of an arc - he was an absolute from beginning to end. We're only even debating because Ledger's performace was uncommonly good for this genre. Bruce and Harvey did have an arc, the movie was about how they changed.
As Joker said, well put.
There was lots going on, but in the end the crucial plot points and themes were directed at Batman.
As for the epic part. I agree with many on here. I think the problem with many "third" installments is they try so hard to top the previous one, and in doing so they forget about the key aspects, character and story. So I say don't try to go back to BB or try to make TDK again. Just make a good story as he has the past two times. Which I'm sure he will. I think the Nolan bros understand this as well. Make a good story, and that in the end will make a great third installment.
