Is anyone else not impressed by the marketing and thinking how that will affect the returns?

I feel like 2016 is not even halfway done and there are already like 3 films that earned over $100 million in just 3 days, with Civil War being the fourth film and I don't think that is supposed to be a good thing for X-Men. Then next May, there's a couple of Family movies (Angry Birds/Alice 2) sandwiching X-Men. Then after X-Men's opening weekend, TMNT comes out, then after that, Warcraft/Conjuring 2 then Finding Dory during its 4th weekend and its just a LOT of genre films! And X-Men films tend to have big drops especially the 2nd/3rd weekend.

Then the marketing doesn't seem enough to excite people IMO unlike the marketing for Civil War and BvS.

I'm sure it will kick in full force here soon, they are slowly starting now.

Back to X-Men

I'm impressed by the marketing, especially by 'The Ages of Apocalypse' and that video, but I do think it doesn't reach new potential fans/viewers. It's not mainstream enough (if that makes any sense).

The TV ads and food/drink promo's should give the movie some visibility, but they're not really artistically impressive or original.

We should get a 3rd trailer, some character spots if its anything like DOFP and obviously clips soon

DOFP had more viral marketing than this one. I think by April 2014, we already got 3 viral sites, then 3 trailers then a clip shown at Movie Awards. Then the Empire covers promo was amazing even if the covers weren't so amazing.

Well technically Olivia Munn was supposed to present at the MTV movie awards but couldn't so we missed that opportunity for some free publicity.

Yeah, I know, it could be better, but the things we already got, worked for me.

I always wonder if the viral marketing of the X-movies really works or if it's just something for those who already are big fans or interested in the movie. It could be clever and generate some buzz, but does it result in significantly more seats bought in the cinema's? Still, this kind of promo is far more innovating than some boring posters.

well when those at cinemacon say the trailer they see is action packed you know that there is a lot of cool stuff they are not showing yet, so it's not so much a case of not having anything to show they just haven't done it yet

I know it's most likely a case of them holding stuff back, but that's silly.
Not saying they shouldve released stuff like 4 months ago, but next trailer better show personality from some of it's characters.
You have Cyclops, Jean, and Storm. 3 of the most recognizable and prolific X-Men and we've seen so little of them in trailers. 3 heavy hitters

None of the action scenes other than Quicksilver's have really drawn me in from what we've seen either.

All the action they described from that trailer sounded like scenes we already saw in trailer 2. If anything it just sounded like trailer 2 with some added Raven.

I concur with the general opinion that the marketing has been fairly lackluster. I went back and watched the trailers for DoFP and those were much stronger than the ones for XMA. I also agree that most of the problems come from focusing too much on the foe and end-of-the-world stuff and not enough on the team. I get that Apocalypse is a very different movie but still, the heroes (and frenemies like Magneto) are why people watch the movies. I don't think we've seen Storm, Nightcrawler, Psylocke, or Angel even say anything; Scott had a few words and Jean was at the top of the teaser trailer but its not enough.

Exactly

Part of marketing though isn't needing to show them all talking, most of the DOFP characters didn't talk in trailers

But DOFP had the novelty of having Wolverine and the original cast back. That's all they really needed in the marketing

I don't see the harm of showing their personalities in trailers for this.

This is coming off 2 previously critically appraised X-films, and DoFP made good money. This is the last of the prequel trilogy...I have to think its going to do very well.

A lot of the DoFP marketing was the "heroes" interacting with each other, mainly Logan, Xavier, and Magneto. In the XMA trailers, we've mostly gotten dramatic one-liners instead of a real dialogue. They do have one notable back-and-forth but that is with MacTaggert and not terribly interesting, really just exposition so the GA knows who Apocalypse is.

So far, I think one of the best trailer moments was the beginning of the teaser with Jean and Xavier, when we actually felt some emotion through our heroes instead of the eye-candy destruction and ominous monologues of the rest of it. I also enjoyed the shot of the missiles firing as the Clarity song comes in. I guess I just want to feel some emotion and in this case I think they're shooting for something like dread and coming up a little short.

So long story short, I don't need everybody to have a line in the trailer. I want to see some meaningful dialogue exchanges between the characters that informs me why I should care that Apocalypse is trying to kill most everyone.

Christian Kane remains my pick. He basically played Logan already on Leverage.

Has his acting improved bc I remember him from Angel and I liked him there but was nothing too impressive. Even so, I think he's too old. Whoever they get next, they should aim to be able to have the same longevity as HJ and an actor in his 40s wont cut that, especially for a character thats not supposed to age much

So, the complaint is that Logan is too old???

I would just go so far as to say the trick is the trailers are not showing enough of why this movie is new. Apocalypse wants to destroy the world? Well so did Magneto (to a degree) in X2 and so did Kevin Bacon in First Class. So does every villain the Avengers fight. What else? It has Magneto going to the dark side and Xavier being concerned while Jennifer Lawrence prepares for "war?" Well... we've seen that too.

It just needs a hook. Days of Future Past had the nostalgia hook of the old cast back and then seeing them interact with the new cast, which gave it a novelty, as did the emphasis on time travel and the Sentinels.

I do predict that Apocalypse will at the very least be a decent movie and solid end to the First Class trilogy. And I have a fanboy hope that Singer will pull it out of the hat again and deliver something really special like he did in X2 and DoFP. But even the latter is true, the trailers are doing little to differentiate it from other superhero movies. Meanwhile, BvS and Civil War both looked quite different with the "brother vs. brother" marketing. Sure BvS ended up being awful, but folks didn't believe the critics until they saw it for themselves.

Maybe if Singer does make another really good superhero movie, the reviews will help give this some lift.

I feel if they want to portray a "younger Logan" Scott Eastwood would be a good option especially considering Hugh looks like his father and Scott looks just like his dad.

i get what he's saying. Not that Logan is too old but it doesn't seem like they're gonna cast someone who might not play Wolverine a long time because of his age.
I personally expect the next choice to be in his 30s

I wouldnt mind Kane though

no one said anything about the character; the actor is too old. HJ will last play Wolverine next year and I dont see them using him again for at least 2 years. 2019, CK would be 44/45. Thats too old to step into the role. They should ideally get someone thats in his early 30s when he starts. Thats perfect for a 10-15 year run
