Just saw the TV spot...

It obviously doesn't excite that much because there wasn't any new footage. Plus, it did seem and little rushed and lazy.

However, at least the movie is now getting some exposure on TV which is a step in the right direction. In the next two months WB are going to have to do a marketing BLITZ. Superman isn't what he used to be in the eyes of the public... so they need to make sure this movie is front and center. They literally can't afford to be coy on this one.

I hope they find the right balance between stoic philosophy and pulse-pounding action with the previews in the coming weeks.
Thing is though, do you realize just how many people watch the National Championship Game? Usually around 15-20 million people. It may be nothing new to us, but it most likely reached someone who wasn't aware that there was a new Superman movie coming out. I think this is an awesome start.

I was kinda hoping they’d go minimalist/creative/impressionistic with the first TV spot. Maybe just tease with the logo, the Snyder/Nolan name recognition, perhaps play up the anniversary angle (June 1938 -> June 2013) and then offer a single “money shot.” Granted, this approach tells you next to nothing in terms of what the movie’s about - just that a new Superman movie exists and is coming soon. But that may be all that’s needed for a first volley; and it might have made a stronger impression than a condensed/rapid-edit version of the extant trailer. To me, the spot (though entirely adequate) looked like a typical ad for a typical summer movie. It didn’t say “this is DIFFERENT,” “this will be an EVENT.” (Admittedly, I don’t have fresh eyes on this; maybe it impressed the average Joe and Jane more.)

This TV Spot did a great job of differentiating Man of Steel from the typical summer movie. And the way they throw in Superman's "What do you think?" question to Lois at the end, just like in the trailer... It really is genius. He's not asking Lois, he's asking the audience. And it forces people to think, if just for a second on what they just saw, and if they're interested in seeing Superman again.

I don't think they can afford to do the kind of TV Spot you described. It would get people who are already fans excited, but it would have done nothing for the general audience. Especially the people watching the game it premiered during. A TV Spot like that is exactly the type of thing I would be afraid WB would do, but at least they seem to understand that they need to sell the story as well as the fact that it's Superman.

I haven't been on Warner's YouTube page actively, but that looks to be alot more views than most of it's Tv Spots for numerous other films.

Agreed. The ratings aren't out for last nights game yet, but this article talks about the final four ratings and I would assume that the championship game (which was a great game btw) would be even higher.

ATLANTA (AP) — CBS is enjoying its best Final Four ratings since 2005.
The network announced it averaged a 9.4 fast-national rating and 15.7 million viewers for the national semifinals on Saturday night. That's an increase of about 4 percent from the 9.0 rating and 15.3 million viewers that watched last year's Final Four in New Orleans.
Wichita State and Louisville earned an 8.7 rating and 14.5 million viewers for their game at the Georgia Dome, while the nightcap recorded a 10.2 rating and 17.1 million viewers.
The Cardinals and Wolverines are playing in the championship game Monday night.

I realize I am being cynical here, but this spot doesn't even mention the name Superman.

Funny how people bring up the number of viewers for the NCAA but for SB which brings in 4-5 times as much viewers it was OK for WB to miss that out because an extra 2 mil that they would have paid for that (compared to how much an NCAA finals cost) would have blown a hole in the budget.:o

So what? Neither have the trailers. I doubt he will even be called that for a large majority of the film.

And even if the trailers and spots don't mention the name "Superman", it's blatantly obvious its a Superman movie.

I actually also don't think the name will be uttered. And if so, not till the end.

It doesn't have to mention his name you see the blue suit with the red cape and\or the S symbol and you know instantly who it is

So what?.....Are you serious?

I'm not saying he won't ever be called Superman in the movie, but I doubt we'll see people calling him Superman most of the time.

We'll probably hear him called "Clark" or "Kal-El" or even "The alien" most of the time.

A SB spot for MOS would have been completely worthless for WB, as:

- it was too soon after the more potent trailer in December, still fresh in most people's minds.

- the majority of SB trailers were for films out in April / May

- If WB showed the same footage as for the first trailer, people would have complained. If WB showed new footage, there would be more expectations for more and more footage to be released up until its release. And yes, there WOULD have still been complaints, even IF a SB spot had been released.

So WB did the best thing - not bother. Now that the film is 2 months away, the spots can start.

To me, the spot played like a “final push” ad. As in, “you’ve now seen all the trailers and posters and other TV spots. So here’s just a quick summary and reminder that the movie will be out next week!” It didn’t seem like an intro for all those people who (allegedly) didn’t even know a new Superman movie was coming soon.

That said, I just had a second look at the spot… and it’s growing on me. :cwink:

How would everyone feel if we only saw Superman fly twice in the whole movie? Once when he is battling Zod and again either at the beginning or end when he takes off from the Fortress of Solitude and leaves the atmosphere (I assume)....

I never said you were and infact I agreed with you. I was merley saying that it was only rushed so they could get it out there.

Gotcha. And that's kind of what bugs me. I feel like they had more time to work on a TV spot and this just seemed like an after thought.

Oh yeah I agree with that, its almost as of someone went oh **** we need a tv spot for this. Errmmm well just recut the trailer. But like I said before it did its job so its all good :)

So elmayimbe thinks a new MOS trailer comes out next week. I'm not convinced anymore. We'll see. Hopefully we see MOS on the cover of EW's summer preview tomorrow. I'll punch someone in the face if some other film get's the cover. :cmad:

So...... Superman Lives? Will there be a giant-spider too? And gay Zod Robots?

I think it will, I wouldn't pay too much attention to the TV spot. They've probably had that cut for a few weeks ready to release when they did and they probably want to save the shots they have in the new trailer for that trailer.
