One of the themes of the story is discovering and becoming comfortable with one's identity ("Mutant and Proud"). The hidden and grotesque nature of Mystique and Hank's abilities is a source of shame for them and is what draws them together. Hank's shame is so strong that he tries to "cure" it and in the process only brings it fully to the surface. Mystique meanwhile decides to shed her human disguise and show the world he true skin (all of it).

There are numerous conversations and scenes surrounding this idea with both Mystique and Hank together and separately.

Erik gave him a compliment. He choked him. That was Hank dealing with a perceived slight not him being furry and blue.
Now if that's what you consider proper character arc then so be it.

Exactly. It was representative of how Hank viewed himself.

Also, Hank's arc is a tragic one and a complicated one. It is sufficiently completed particularly in terms a secondary character so it doesn't need to be tied up in a nice bow.

I'm finding it really strange how many people I speak to think that a Batman and Superman movie is weird.

First of all, the majority don't even know they've ever been put together before. So they think the entire concept just sounds odd and forced.

Then when I explain to them that they have been friends for years in the comics, they are like 'really?' and get this confused, unimpressed look on their face.

It's gonna be interesting to see the GA's reaction to this films marketing and reception.

Yeah, I know a few people whose immediate reaction was "There's NO way that can be good." And granted, these aren't people who disliked the Nolan Batman films or MOS either. They just seemed to think that putting Batman and Superman together on film is a dumb idea.

I don't know. I mean, it certainly COULD suck, but I think that you have to at least wait until we know some more details or see some footage before you jump to that conclusion.

That's probably another reason why it would have made more sense to go the Marvel route with the film franchises: Building up each hero individually with hints of a larger universe helped get people acclimated to the idea of something like The Avengers. Sure, a Batman/Superman team up seems reasonable to us, but the vast majority of people are exposed to them as separate properties with very different tones and styles. They might need more time to get used to it than they're getting.

I've never been a big fan of their relationship because it has always seemed forced. But having recently read at least one good Superman/Batman story, I can see the mutual respect they have for one another and get the necessity they serve in each other's lives. If the movie can accomplish that then we're it'll be fine.

I think the larger point here is that the movie's going to face a huge marketing hurdle if the general audience reaction to the basic premise of the movie is "...wha... huh... ?"

I am optimistic but will wait till the teaser. I am liking Affleck's casting, I get a Keaton Conroy vibe from him.

Agreed. I don't think it's a guaranteed billion like some are predicting.

In a way it's easier to market a Justice League movie to the GA, because Batman and Superman together in a team situation makes for more sense than Batman and Superman in a partnership.
