I do wonder if it's feasible to work with actual (wingsuit) flight footage as reference plates. I think the only time it's been done for a full action scene is in the last Transformers. Which looked damn fantastic. Come to think of it, Bay would've likely blown our minds if he had a chance to shoot Superman in full capabilities...

The hard part about doing this is, that scene in "Transformers" was a stunt team. Guy who if they died, tragic as it may be, WOULDN'T cause a shut down of production for any extended period of time.

What would happen if Cavill did this, then died?

Don't even joke about that! :cmad: :oldrazz:

As was the MOS sequence more "cool-looking" than the Returns one.

The baby was a happy byproduct.

I guess making character assumptions is your last "weapon", 'eh?

I get this feeling you think I'm stating my opinions as fact...

No studio would ever sign off on their lead flying at fatal speeds. That's why I said 'reference', as there will likely need to be a lot of touching up in post to make the final shot look credible.

I'm by no means a vfx guy, but I see them having to film each scene separately; one with an actual expert flying through any given setting, and then one with Cavill in a special rig to match the lighting and such of the first shot. A live-action equivalent of animation dubbing I suppose. Logistics would be a nightmare, so that's probably one of the reasons why no one has even attempted it. I think the final results would be glorious though.

I'm aching to experience one film in IMAX which successfully captures the sense of superhuman flight. I have a feeling I'll be an old man by then. :(

Iron Man used skydive chambers to mocap and give that sort of 'suspended' physical effect of someone in mid-air. I think it added a lot for that. Maybe some little extra movements of Supes balancing himself and making little adjustments in flight would help a lot too.

Maybe someone in something like a wing suit in a wind chamber, with just enough support to hang him, and then use him for mocapping. Could be some cool results.

Have any scenes in particular you can link to which shows the final results? As someone pointed out earlier I can't judge too fairly with Iron Man, because it's not comparable to watching a human being. However, you did just remind me of this action scene in the last Iron Man:

That is damn close to what I want; natural sense of dramatic heights/speeds, along with some nice dynamic shots. I know the last moments the rescue (near the ocean) was shot for real, but I am very curious how they shot the portion above. It looks legit, but logic tells me they had to have done this in a closed environment.

Well, just answered my own question:

They did shoot it for real! WOW.

There ya go, proof's in the pudding. Nothing beats going out in nature with the camera. No wonder it looked flawless. I want this type of filmmaking in Superman!

Truly flawless scenes and one of the many reasons I love IM3. Underrated that movie is.

Am I the only one who doesn't give an airborne copulation about the Mandarin "controversy" either way? Had it been totally like the comic it would have been cool. What they actually ended doing was fine too.

It's getting there, though. Again, movement makes a huge difference when it's right...and mocap has done a lot for it. (I'm not talking about young Jeff Bridges in Tron Legacy, of course). It's there to be done, but it's got to be done a certain way and combined right with real human shots.

You know what's also tough to do well without calling attention to the 'effect'...suit or no suit? Super speed...added motion blurs or filming speeds, etc. I wasn't crazy about a fair share of that in MOS either, but I'm trying to think of where it may have been done well. You don't really see that much in other stories/characters.

Oh of course its getting there and I think it will. Yeah that Jeff Bridges was cringeworthy.

Well yeah that's another point movement, again I think its easier to make a guy in a robotic suit move more naturally than a human cause of the robotic element.

I personally am not a big CG fan but understand when its required and while at times it can look cartoony I don't hold that against filmmakers as much as others do as there are budgets/timescales to think of.

We'd have to agree to disagree there but I get where you're coming from cause I don't think Green Lantern is anywhere near as bad as people make out, infact I quite enjoy it.

I just want WETA to do most of the effects for this film. Is that too much to ask?lol
