What a strange contraption, why not just drive in the lower vehicle?
More and more I wonder.... why does he call himself Batman?...here we have a flying weapon in his arsenal that looks nothing like a bat!

Yeah, everything that he uses must look like a bat!
Let's just call him Lobsterman. The Seafood Rises.

There's this great movie called BATMAN BEGINS, it'll explain everything to you.
"C'mon Alfred! You didn't cut my sandwiches in the shape of my logo! Fancy a game of Bat-minton? Wanna guess what shape the rackets are?! Wayne is such a common name, how about Bruce Batman? No one will know!"
Since Nolan is a fan of Blade Runner, has anyone thought that this version of the Batwing was inspired by those police 'spinners'? (In how it operates and hovers.)

Good catch there. It seems so. It looks like it may not completely fly in the air, or it could completely surprise us Batpod coming out of the Tumbler style and shoot up a building to evade a missile that one of Bane's mercs shoots at him.
