I think he'll likely get a nomination.

A career defining performance for Affleck. But it's the Peoples Choice Awards tho.....:/

I, sadly, don't think he'll get nominated for any major awards. I would be very happy if he did though.

I think Best Actor is far too competetive this year for Affleck to land on the list. Great performance, though, and it should assuage some of the doubters' concerns.
Ok thanks.

...Hm well the ol' Ignore list will have an added member.:o
Noone puts me on ignore, I'm too awesome. :woot: Try it, you'll miss me too much. :hehe:

His reviews are GREAT, critics think it's his best performance yet, brilliant and definitively oscar-worthy. Just check Rotten Tomatoes or Metacritic. He has a chance and is for sure in the top 10 contenders list but he only issue is that this is an exceptionally tough year for Best Actor (some think the category should be expanded to 10 nominees!) and The Academy has a habit of rewarding actors who interpret historical figures or inspiring characters and though Ben's character in Gone Girl is very complex, it's not exactly inspiring. I personally loved him in the movie though, more so than in Hollywoodland and think he is well deserving of a nomination at least.

But if I may add, Best Actor Drama at the Golden Globes is not a long shot at all, especially since Ben has already won 3 and has also been nominated for Best Supporting actor for Hollywoodland. And let's not forget the Academy SNUB for Best Director, that snub pissed off a looot of people and the voters sometimes pay their debts on delay so who knows.
Good, hope he has a shot at the GGs. I think he'll be winning/getting nominations for a fair number of awards over the next decade or 2 as either actor or director (especially director).

Performances seen (and praised):

Eddie Redmayne, The Theory of Everything
Benedict Cumberbatch, The Imitation Game
Michael Keaton, Birdman
Timothy Spall, Mr. Turner
Steve Carell, Foxcatcher (for some reason they are pushing him for Best Actor)
Ben Affleck, Gone Girl
Miles Teller, Whiplash
Jake Gyllenhaal, Nightcrawler

Performances to be seen:

Bradley Cooper (American Sniper)
David Oyelowo (Selma)
Jack O'Connell (Unbroken)

Stiff competition this year.
Wow, that is tough.

Well challenge accepted. :o:oldrazz:
I wish you luck friend. None hath managedeth throughout history  but you may be the 1st. :cmad:

You could put Joaquin Phoenix (Inherent Vice) on the list, but that movie is so unusual and obscure that I personally don't think he'll get a serious look come awards-time.

Seeing the previews for that movie, it reminds me of The Big Lebowski so much. And I LOVE The Big Lebowski.

Ben Affleck was great in Gone Girl, and in an average year he might have been in line for a Best Actor nomination come Oscar time.... but the Best Actor category is sooooo competitive this year. A whole bunch of great performances, and showier, more Oscar-friendly roles than the quieter performance Affleck gave in Gone Girl.

I wouldn't put so much emphasis on it not being Oscar-friendly because it's not "showy". That seems to be a prevailing thought, but I don't agree with it. Just off the top of my head; PSH as Capote, Jeff Bridge in Crazy Heart, Adrien Brody in the Pianist, Sean Penn in Mystic River, Benigni in Life is Beautiful, etc.

These are from showy performances. They're simply examples of an actor being outstanding. Particularly above and beyond the competitors for that year. Ben's chances are limited by the nature of the role itself. You could've had Brando in his prime, and if he honored how the character was written, even he wouldn't have grabbed the statue for the part.

Hey do you guys remember a few months ago when this thread was all about how old Affleck was and he'd never be able to get into decent shape for this role?

Which is odd considering he's always had a naturally athletic body. Ah, those were the days.

And then when he was in top shape, people said he was still fat? Good times.
