Don't ever compare Nolan and Spielberg haha!

Spielberg is behind Jaws, E.T., Jurassic Park and other films that still leave a huge mark to this very day. His films are beyond iconic.

Nolan is a competent director and he's transcending right now, toward the path of a remembered director. But he isn't there yet.

I love Spielberg... But WhilWalready surpassed him. IMO.

While I love Nolan's Memento, TDK, and Inception, I don't think his resume can match Spielberg's E.T., Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park, and Jaws yet. And there are still many more films of Spielberg that I have yet to name.

I can't tell who that is in the passenger's seat.

I love the Jeep representing...

What's going on here?

I thought this was a space/time warp film. I don't want to read the early draft, but are there like flashbacks with the crew or something?

Even mundane spy photos excite me, this is easily my most anticipated movie of whichever year it is coming out.

Part of the story (beginning) happened on earth.

I do wonder how much of the script changed because everything I'm seeing so far matches what's on the script (except for the [blackout]gender change and expansion of Chastain's[/blackout] character). I'm guessing then that most of Nolan's changes were with the events that happened during the [blackout]space expedition[/blackout].

Ah yes, makes sense that's Topher. He's in other photos in the same location.

For some reason I was thinking it was Wes Bentley.

Every director has their own style.

Nolan sticks to what his good at and that is fine. Nolan not being able to make a good romantic comedy for example doesn't make him a bad film maker.

Every director has their critics. People moan about Spielberg movies being overly sentimental and emotionally manipulative but that is what he is good at. Many directors have tried doing what Spielberg does and failed.

Indeed. I believe even Nolan himself has brought this up. He mentioned that at one point earlier in his career, he lamented that wasn't as versatile as... Steven Soderbergh, I think (he was his mentor?) but eventually came to realise where his talents lie, and not to force it unnaturally.

I prefer that he stick to making the types of movies he wants to make, like Fincher does, than try to force a square peg into a round hole.

With Nolan and Fincher I automatically know that those films will be something up my street (as long as Fincher doesn't pull a Benjamin Button again) that will interest and likely entertain me. They just make films that are suited to my taste. I'm instantly excited when a new project is announced.

However, with someone like Spielberg I don't get that feeling cause yes he may have been behind some classics he has also been behind a few stinkers IMO or just films that don't appeal to me.

I'd personally rate Nolan above Spielberg. I have watched Nolan's film countless times (including Following and Insomnia) and through his films you can see someone who has just naturally progressed. With Spielberg I do love some of his films but not always.

I'm also glad that Nolan sticks with what he is good at. He has a 100% record with me at the moment.

Personally I don't want Nolan to be another Spielberg. Spielberg can continue being Spielberg and Nolan can continue being Nolan.

Nolan has already made a mark on the industry though, he single handedly sucked all of the fun and wonder out of a lot genre films so that's a big accomplishment.

I love Nolan's films so I don't 100% mean that disparagingly, I just have a habit of not sugarcoating the truth about filmmakers.

Really? Bad genre movie before Nolan looked like Fantastic Four, Elektra and the Star Wars prequels. Now they look like The Amazing Spider-Man an Star Trek Into Darkness.

He didn't ruin them. He just found a new way for filmmakers to **** it up while trying to copy him. ;)

As for Nolan being Spielberg or Kubrick or what have you...

I think you're never going to have a single filmmaker who is like another. At least not a great one. What makes them great is they have their own unique voice and signature.

However, I will say that I think Nolan is the closest this generation has to a filmmaker like Spielberg who can marry high art with high commercialism, making something vastly entertaining but of great substance and quality. Spielberg also was not the first to do that. In a very different way, I'd say Spielberg inherits the traits from John Ford and, more strikingly, Alfred Hitchcock. I say Hitchcock because he made mostly genre films (thrillers). And for that reason, he never won an Oscar. Spielberg only won one when he made a Holocaust picture. Similarly, the Academy now snubs Nolan and turns down their noses at his films every time when is released.

That is the biggest proof to me of him continuing this trend. He makes movies that both critics and audiences adore, but the Academy resents. That shows the correlation.

I saw Into Darkness twice and honestly don't see much of a Nolan influence, it's far siller than anything Nolan has done. The influence is very, very slight and superficial I'd say (I saw Into Darkness a second time just a few days ago BTW).

I suffered through The Amazing Spider-Man once and 100% see the Nolan influence in that film. The movie is chopped from here to high havens so you have to look closer because it's obvious Sony lightened the tone with the reshoots. I suspect the sequel is going to be less Nolan rip-offy from what I've seen.

I see the Nolan influence most in SkyFall but I loved SkyFall so I don't care...too much.

I think it's fascinating how much influence Nolan has had since 2005. He is just a pimp. He should start getting checks from some of these productions. lol

only JJ wants to be a Spielberg copy.

it would be great to see Nolan directing a fun movie like this . i know it will get dark in the third act but the first acts will be pure joy and energy.

i like the guy as a director and i like his movies. but he is in his comfort zone for 5 years. to long.

Exactly, Abrams is more influenced by Spielberg than anyother director. He desperately wants to be Spielberg.
