The Winter Soldier Captain America 2: News and Speculation - - - - - - Part 19

I find it really amusing that after all the great quotes and gifs and whatnots that the MCU has provided since 2008, it is Hail Hydra that has gone viral..lol. I guess we should thank Gary Shandling and Robert Redford.

Please, for the love of Steve Rogers… tag your Agents of SHIELD spoilers… at least until tomorrow, LOL!

We have no cable and I'm watching this on Hulu+ first thing in the morning ;)

oh ok, what the hell...

Hail Hydra!

Don't go to the AoS threads because none is tagging anything there.

I've actually never waded in there - I assumed it was going to be a ton of kvetching over the quality of the show, and I didn't want to get into it with others, especially since I like the show. It's got flaws, but it's better than 90% of the dreck on TV right now.

I've just got to make it through tomorrow morning once it's up! Then WHEEEEE!!

I'm sure this has been discussed at some point, but I was just going back through and trying to remember where all the major characters stood at the end of TWS:

*Cap: setting out to find Bucky.

*Bucky: last seen in hiding at the Smithsonian exhibit, beginning to remember and believe in who he, and Steve, once were.

*Widow: I can't remember where exactly she was going. Given what we know of AOU, it's safe to say that she rejoins Cap at some point during the movie; but does Cap's search for Bucky take him to the scenes they're currently shooting in Korea? And does that prove that Bucky *will* be in AOU, if only as a cameo?

*Falcon: says he's more of a soldier instead of a spy. Reasonable to assume he stays with the USAF; but it's also reasonable to assume he joins Cap in his canonical role as Steve's longtime sidekick. Would that prove that Falcon becomes an Avenger in AOU?

*Agent 13: Sharon has joined the CIA.

*Hill: has joined Stark Industries. (Maybe as his new security chief, taking Happy's old job?)

*Rumlow: burned, battered and bruised, but he's being taken out to (a presumably HYDRA) hospital. Grillo has strongly hinted that he'll be in AOU....will we see masked Crossbones there, as muscle for Von Strucker maybe?

*Fury: he's off to Europe for a mission. Reasonable to assume that he's talking about the scenes in "Sokovia" with Wanda & Pietro and Hawkeye, but there's been no reports of SLJ anywhere on the set, so....?

*Pierce: deader than four o'clock.

*Zola: you can't even remotely assume that an AI would "die" in an explosion. Let alone one as brilliant as Zola. I'm sure he and his genocidal algorithm will continue to wreak havoc in AOU.

Well at least the MCU was able hit all the right marks when it came to their adaptation of "Hydra".

Now if they can only revise their take on "AIM" to be more aligned with how they are in the comics, we could then get some great stories within the MCU with AIM and Hydra either working with or against each other, while the Heroes are caught in the crossfire.

Ok spoilers ahead!!!

You guys think winter soldier will appear in aou? I would love to see him helping avengers out :)

Yeah there has been a lot of complaining and a lot of (imo) unreasonable "I hate character X because arbitrary reasons"

I actually think the first 6 eps or so were pretty poor and deserved the criticisms but it's picked up steam since then and in particular the last 6 or so have been quality tv.

But feel free to try out the general thread or the ep 17 thread after you watch it. It's nowhere near as bad as it once was.

Highly doubt it. Doesn't feel like his place to be. He doesn't quite belong there imo

This article from EW.com has tons of spoilers, so don't read if you haven't seen the movie, but it is beautifully written and well worth the read:

'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' is the most political (and subversive) superhero movie ever made

It's a pretty good read because it shows that while not getting partisan one way or another, Marvel found a way to make a political movie that they really haven't done before in any of their other franchises.
Come one guys, why do people just ignore the political plotline in IM3? I mean, in some ways the movie was just as politically reverent as TWS.

There's a bit of a political message there in IM3, but it's not at the forefront of the movie like TWS' message and not speaking on a topic that has continually been in the news for months now.

A bit? The whole movie is a metaphor for how American businesses are using the image of terrorists and the war on terror as a means of propaganda to distract from what they're doing and boost their profits based on the fear of said image, and how the government is complacent in it. Also implying that businessmen are the true enemy of the country and not terrorists. The whole movie is a comment on our politics and society all the way down to how the Iron Patriot armor is handled. The core message of the movie is really similar to TWS'.

The message in IM3 is "War on terror is BIG BUSINESS!"

I think IM3's political message was less palatable because it was satirized through the Mandarin, which wasn't everyone's cup of tea. TWS played its political thriller straight hence it's easier to digest.

The Winter Solider is bold with its political story, done in the spirit of The Dark Knight, but I'd say the bravest movie is actually Iron Man 3.

Has anyone seen any speculation where maybe Project Insight was all misdirection, instead that the destruction of SHIELD was the real objective?

With the wikileaks like information dump and the collapse of the world's elite black ops organization, the world would probably fall into a state of chaos and be ready for a messianic tyrant, pick one: Zemo, Skull, Strucker, etc. to rise up and restore world order.

There are two differences between IM3 and TWS' political messages.

1) It's much better done and executed in TWS.

2) It comes off very preachy in IM3, whereas it comes off natural in TWS. It felt more like Shane Black had a political agenda and put the message before the story itself, including using the fans as guinea pigs for a social experiment via the IM3 trailers followed by brushing off everyone unhappy with the twist as comic book purists. Much like TDK, TWS manages to be political but avoid all of that.

Agreed.
I think, politically, IM3 and TWS are companion pieces in their indictment of America's sudden self-destructive need to sacrifice freedom for a false sense of security. Truth be told, Nolan explores this a great deal, too, especially in TDKR.

There's a weird sense of irony in the fact that the most politically subversive movies out there today are big budget superhero flicks.

Cap 2 was about sacrificing freedom for false security, but how was IM3 about that?
