Chapter 37- “One of Us, One of Them” – Discussion Thread 9/29/08

I believe that the original quote was 5%. It was also the potential that was referred to not the brain itself.

Yeah, that would suck indeed :csad: Haha, I remember in college when a professor clarified that we use all of our brain, but sometimes only 10% is needed for one particular function, I was like, ooooh :O

You should have seen me when Sylar referenced that... I literally yelled at the tv, "NO, WE USE ALL OF IT, YOU S**TY CHARACTER JACKASS!"

^I was angry when they showed a python out in the middle of the African dessert.

Ugh... people who believe the 10% myth.

WE USE ALL THE BRAIN PEOPLE.

Seriously. If they all now have every power in that very stupid myth 90% of unused brain... show sucks and I'm never watching it again.

Who said I believed it? I'm going with what the show said. That's like saying I believe people really have those powers as well. Within the show's context the 10% myth is not a myth. You can't just change the show's rules based on your own.

Who said I believed it?

My bad.

I'm going with what the show said.

Well. The show used to pretend it was smarter. Heck it used to say genes caused the powers... now it isn't that.

That's like saying I believe people really have those powers as well.

No, it's not. It's a huge break in the suspension of disbelief when they go up against something like that which has been proven wrong.

Sure, powers are easy to believe in because normally something in the story explains it... aka the ole new genes story.

Within the show's context the 10% myth is not a myth.

Which is stupid.

You can't just change the show's rules based on your own.

I'm not... I'm just asking for them to not change the color of the sky to purple for absolutely no reason.

I'm honestly just going with whatever the show says right now. I don't really care about the origin of the powers as much as the stories that result from said powers. I never looked too deep into how Marvel's mutants got their powers. They just had them and that was enough for me.

Now with this show having people gain abilities shown by others I'm curious about their explanation of it. All I have are theories based on what I've been given. The actual explanation may very well suck ass.

There was supposed to be a total of 12 escapees from level 5. So far they've only shown about half of them...

^Just like the tons of villains that broke out of the Raft in New Avengers :whatever:

I don't really care about the origin of the powers

Just for the record - the powers come from the adrenal glands, this was explained during the first episode with a great example from Maya. During times of high stress or anxiety, adrenaline is pumped through the body which activates the powers for the first time.

The 10% figure could actually be true within the context of the show, by some logic. Don't think of it as a reduction in human faculties, think of it as an expansion of human potential. As in, think of it as saying that the powered people on the show are capable of being 10x more powerful than normal people, who only think they're using all of their brains, but really only use 10%--the non-powerful part.

Hey Cap, please never write for Heroes. But it is still better than one season the power is in the brain and the genes... to suddenly just being in another part all together... and that is found out in five minutes... REAL time.

The brain is still involved, adenaline activates that part of the brain for superpowers.

But... rewrites the first season and says EVERYONE has that part in their brain and you can take a magic injection that will give superpowers.

It was never stated as a FACT that the powers originated in the brain or the DNA, that was a theory purposed by Mohinder's father. Mohinder has now found, thanks to the perfect example Maya, the powers are activated through the adrenal glands and controlled by the brain.

Makes way more sense then it just being in the DNA.

It was never stated... but somehow Chandra was able to find that gene and then have a huge list of people that possibly had it. So that means it suddenly changed just for this promicin storyline.

Yes, and that gene is "activated" through the burst of adrenaline.

Yes, and that gene is "activated" through the burst of adrenaline.

But... they have removed the gene all together. Because now Mohinder can just inject himself and BAM super powers. Mohinder wasn't on the list... didn't have the gene... and will hopefully just die and this promicin storyline can be over.

You don't even know how the storyline will play out and you're already complaining....

Mohinder didn't give himself superpowers. He activated them. Everybody has the potential, few ever have it turned on. It's why Sylar is all about flipping on those switches in himself.
