I can't take credit for this thread, ray. Bamfer planted the seed, I just... make sure it grows? It's Bamfer's baby which I and the rest of the mods co-parent because we think it's a good idea.

It's our baby.

It's my biological baby...you're the adopted father:o

Ok... so what's the word on this color name deal? Is it a go, no go, maybe? At least I'll be able to tell the different shades of gray what with me being colorblind and all... but at least others here will benefit from it.

I still like the idea of the rep points thing but since jag says no... let's do it anyway.

I've seen the rep points thing in action on another board that's even bigger than this one, and it just gets abused and used as a way to ostracize people by cliques. It just creates more division and infighting and doesn't cause people to self-regulate themselves when they're being jackasses. Quite the contrary, some of those jackasses amp up their behavior so they can collect negative reps like trophies, so it actually encourages trolling and obnoxious behavior with some people.

jag

strong agree!

That's not going to happen. If somebody wants a super terrific secret forum they can open a forum of their own.
This is the kind of alienating post that's not required.

We're here to get provide and get 'Feedback', not to be dictated to. Why not enlighten us to a little reasoning behind this.

It'll be invitaton only. It could be a diversary means to dealing with trouble makers with rewarding them with a carrot over a stick method.

Again it could be on an invite only basis where mods first invite people in and then suggestions are made for newer members to join up.

i don't mind the points meter as long as it is activated on a time basis.

say when you become a golden member and have been here long enough, you are then allowed to start rating the contribution of others who have been here for less time than yourself which may help them become golden members sooner.

maybe becoming a golden age superhero means having a good time and rating joint combo.

ps, any chance of setting up a messenger function so you can discuss subjects with people in real time without spamming a thread. or combine it with a friend function so we can talk to our friends privately without so much of a lag?

I agree with the latter statement. The former, there's not really as many cliques if you don't include the "gamers", "loungers" and "Batman forum regulars" etc.

I think we are gonna take your idea about voting on a change and select 3 ideas to put in a poll.

The ability to change a thread title will be implemented.

Any decision yet on allowing the person who starts a thread to close it as well?

Spoke to Drak about it, the problem is that if that function was added the poster would also be able to re open it, in which case if a mod closed their thread they could keep re opening it.

I think you'd be surprised at how many cliques develop BECAUSE there's a rep system in place. People band together to gang up on a perceived "enemy" or someone unpopular and neg rep them into oblivion. It just creates more division than anything else in my observations of the system in action.

jag

That doesn't bother me, because I'm pretty e-popular.

is there anyway to stop people making two consecutive posts in a thread to stop double and triple posts.

it also stops people bumping their own threads which have died and promotes them editing in their last post to add more stuff instead of having three consecutive posts?

I guess the only place this may be an issue would be in the fanfiction area where a character limit would prohibit entire stories being told in a block. Could the limit be taken off for fanfiction sector?

Well, maybe that poster that is "perceived to be an enemy" will work harder to gain more respect. Or, they just won't care. There wouldn't be any negative consequences for having a low Rep, but those that want a higher rep would be more careful to not upset others.

Plus, if you limit how often someone can vote a rep point, like one per poster per day, or even just one vote a day, you eliminate the ability to gang up on someone. Who cares if a person gives a bad rep vote to someone, because it would be a one off vote. If that Poster has friends, it could make up the negative vote. But, if everyone just doesn't like the quality of the post, that would affect the rep points, and that would tell the poster he/she should clean up their act. And, that is only if they care about it to begin with.

Just like on Xbox Live, if you have a crappy gamer, that no one has fun playing with, others will vote him down, warning others not to play with him. He'll have to act better to get higher votes. Letting others know that he is ok to play with.

On the hype, if you are having a conversation with someone with a low Rep, you'd know that they can be aggressive, or just mean, but if they have a high rep, then you know you can have a pleasant convesation with them. Like, I'd give you a postitive vote in a heartbeat.

Gotcha, thanks.

Yeah, won't work, for example, I'd neg everyone.:o

I like the addition of Friends, but I fear the 'Social Groups' could become too insular...a lot of them are 'invite only' and it can put across a whole territorial vibe....

All these ideas for implementing rep points and to work out the kinks won't work. You'll get spite points no matter what (that's how people are), people will get upset if Gold people can rate but others can't, etc.

It causes too many problems, and the solutions to the problems cause more problems. I say let that one go.
