He may know how to write Tony Stark, and I have no problem with Stark's role until the last five minutes of the film, but everything else...Black just destroyed, imo.
The main reason for the backlash against IM3 for the twist isn't simply due to the fact that the Mandarin has now become the measuring stick to which all drastic deviations from the comic book source material will be measured against...
...it's the fact that it came from a production company that prided, to the point of bragging/boasting, about how important the source material is and how they "believed" in it, painting them as major hypocrites.
Shane Black actually helped out with Iron Man and Iron Man 2 though. A lot of his ideas and writing are in their. He certainly knew how to write Tony Stark.
His track record as far as filmmaking and writing ain't so bad either. I had no idea he was in Predator, holding a DC comic no less! Great thing about movies is that you learn something new all the time.
I still find it hilarious that people accuse Marvel Studios of doing everything "safe."
Make a joke out of your characters main bad guy is not a great way to go.
To be honest IM as a superhero has never appealed to me so I'm not a bleeding heart for keeping to his source material. The changes made in the movie worked for me and most people that I know that saw the movie. Mind you those people aren't comic book readers. Would I have liked to see the Mandarin in his full glory, rings and all, sure but it wasn't a deal breaker for me. Now liberties like this taken to Cap and Thor? Fugetaboutit!
People seriously wanted to see Kingsley in a final battle as the Mandarin? That would have been ridiculous. Tony would have kicked the s*** out of him right away.

Well, its a good thing Iron Man 3 didn't do that. Killian was anything but a joke.
Yeah he was ok, but nothing that special but the Mandarin "twist" seemed to anger a lot of Ironman fans it appears.
Make a joke out of your characters main bad guy is not a great way to go. A Superhero film is only as good as its villain and IM3 dropped the ball badly on that front. TDKR at least had Bane who was great.
IM3 was a bit of a let down.
It's always a shame when a trilogy or a serious of films...

For some reason it upset almost every DC-fanboy.
lol, no most dc fanboys enjoyed im3. as a dc fanboy i had no reason not to, i don't care about the characters i just want to watch a well made entertaining movie and i did for the most part. As a DC fanboy i didn't mind the Mandarin twist, i enjoyed it. I was bothered by the kid sidekick and the faux-trauma of Tony's.

the Mandarin twist was just terrible in everyway possible...But then at the end of "rises"..when the name "robin" was revealed..you actually heard loud groans in my theatre.
