Duncan Jones' Warcraft - Part 2

@DRZ - Thank you, and that was a joke in response to your Aquaman gif. I saw it and was like, he done lost his mind lol

How long would it take for them to introduce the Lich King?

The Lich King wasn't introduced until Warcraft 3.

Depends on how slow they're taking it. Will they resolve the first war in the first film? How long will it take to tell the story of the second war and Beyond the Dark Portal events... Only then they can start developing Lich King, Artas and stuff like that.

I'm also in the camp that wants to see a Frozen Throne movie. Has anyone indicated if there will be Paladins in this WC film?

Guess the joke's on me!

I don't think Warcraft 2 can be done in 1 movie, so i'd wager to even get to Lich King you'd need to do atleast 3 or 4 movies. But i'm just a nerd, not a film director.

Paladins we're created during the 2nd war. Here's the lore explanation:
The priests never fought battles, but after Warcraft 1 they had to bulk up and thus became Paladins

His theories got shot to hell. Give my man a break, he's having a hard time. :funny:

DRZ or anyone else - does this series feature sentient, soul-stealing swords or unusually cruel humanoid folk descended from dragons?

I know orcs come from another world - what about the trolls?
And that forced him to try and get Reek banned for nothing? Nah, that is troll behavior.

So that 100 million number was incorrect. Good to know.
What you wanted to say is, "Oh my Darth, you were right again. Like I knew you would be". :o

Gotcha, thanks. The lore from WC1 and 2 is fuzzy to me. I need a detailed breakdown of both games and the lore so I can get a refresher.

Is that a baby Thrall that we see in the second trailer?

Damn, she's in great shape. Love her tiny orc tusks. They're cute.

Well all the more reason to go see this movie! :sly:

I'll probably be there opening night with my brother, we both played WoW religiously from Vanilla to WotLK and stopped at about MoP. It'll just be awesome to see what started it all on screen.

So it looks as if you have to have played the game in order to get it according to early reactions.

Some people didn't play the game, but liked the film. Though, if people played WC 1-3, they will enjoy it more because of familiar faces. Well, I think, it's fair for any property.

The fantasy world with wizard, men folk, Elves, dwarves, evil creatures, etc. goes back a very long ways. Tolkien organized it, and gave it a new life in modern literature. Since then, the world has been full of books telling these type of tales. Just type in fantasy novels into google. It is not difficult. It is also why Game of Thrones, even with its obvious tropes, comes off fresh. Because it turns a lot of that on its head. Warcraft doesn't. It just adds a bit of John Carter to the idea, but it is kind of irrelevant as it is little touched upon and is just another take on the old ones, or in Tolkien's case, the Ainur.

Warcraft mythology is what something like Half-Life is to 80s sci-fi action like The Thing. Or Snatchers is to Blade Runner. In other words, it is fine in video game form. Great even. But once brought into the realm of literature or film, this "great mythology" is revealed for what it is. A derivative story not only based on the stories these designers grew up with, but often times lifted directly. Which is great. It is why I enjoy Uncharted. Modern day Indy fun. But if they made it into a film, suddenly the clone nature of it because incredibly obvious.

And if you like that, and want it as a film series, there is nothing wrong with that. But if we are asking how the general public might see it, that is a different question. This series might end up beloved for all we know, but there is nothing I have seen so far that indicates to me this will win over critics and the GA.

If creators want their world to be classical fantasy, then critisizing them for having orcs and elves there is a non-sense, IMO. It's like saying "your sci-fi has aliens? you suck!". I like classical fantasy, much more than pseudo-fantasy like Game of Thrones, I'm an AD&D guy, I love worlds full of ogres, trolls, gryphons, skeletons and orcs. GoT does not feel fresh to me, it feels somewhat bland, if you think of GoT in terms of fantasy, it's more like pseudo-history with some supranatural elements, but that's for another discussion.

Designers were inspired by things they grew up with, no question. It's the most common thing in the world of art.

What's interesting to me is the story of characters in the world. I read the story of Durotan, Orgrim and Frostwolf clan yesterday. And it's a really good read, it's about way the orcs lived on Draenor, about their relationship to draenei, how Durotan did not want to be part of the massacre. It's about Durotan's relationship with Ner'zhul, Velen, Drek'thar, Kil'jaeden, Gul'dan, the Horde in general, it's really rich and it feels rich and well fleshed out. And that's just one guy in the story. You have the whole Human side, and later Elves, Dwarves, Night Elves, Undead, Taurens, Naga, etc.
The story told in WarCraft III and The Frozen Throne, about Arthas, Uther, Jaina, Thrall, Grommash, Tyrande, Malfurion, Illidan, Kel'thuzad, Sylvanas, etc. is fantastic!

I don't get they left one of the most important parts of the business, the promotion, on some company that does not know what to do with it. They need to show that the world is rich and characters are interesting and deep, that it has deep lore and history, that the world feels so complete and real in terms of content. What are you doing Legendary Pictures, Blizzard and Atlas Entertainment?

I think some of the stories in WC has that quality of feeling lifted, for example I never got the love for the Arthas/Lich King storyline, because to me that was just the Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader storyline, adapted for the Warcraft universe. Good guy destined for greatness and to help the good side win, ultimately becoming the bad guy that destroyed everything. But there are plenty of great stories. Illidan has always been my favorite WC-character because he was just more fascinating than most. I think he's an interesting good guy who does certain bad things for what he believes to be good reasons, and ultimately taking the fall for it. (Like saving his night elves in Felwood only to be outcast for destroying the skull of guldan) His methods are questionable but I always liked him as a good guy who wanted to do the right thing, but ultimately kept making a lot of bad choices. Much more interesting than two-note Arthas IMO.

Totally agree with all of this.

I'm interested to see more draenei and elves.

Consona, was the book you read "rise of the Horde" by Christie Golden? Her "Lord of the Clan" is seriously my all time favourite book based off a video game.

i watched 3 featurette videos. its obvious that there is to much story and characters. which will not get enough time

i expect Ducan Jones in 6 month to post a tweet or a comment in an interview that he had a 30 minutes longer cut and that it would make more sense to the general public.
