Duncan Jones' Warcraft - Part 2

Right, I agree and that is my ultimate point. Extra time can fix a film that already had a good core, but it can't fix a rotten to the core film. The reason that I've never watched the Daredevil director's cut is because I didn't like that film at a foundational level so I don't see how the director's cut would change that. It probably made the film better slightly by having it make more sense but I never saw how it could make it good enough for me not to see it as the bad film that I see it as.

Also, as a LotR, I never found any of the extended editions to be "better", even as I love them. I would even say the FotR extended edition is clearly worse then the pretty much perfect theatrical version.

And you should totally watch the Daredevil Director's Cut. Just so you have another excuse to re-watch the Netflix series, and thank Marvel for fixing that crap. :atp:

Oh I already realize that the Netflix show is vastly superior in every way. If I get bored enough I might watch Mark Steven Johnson's DD director's cut.

I feel the opposite about FOTR. The only LOTR Theatrical Cut that bests the EE is ROTK.

If the Russos can do it, certainly a non Disney director can too!
hehe. Warcracft is the first movie. Avengers 2.5....i am sorry Civil War was the third Captain America movie. this is not the same. please. :cwink:

How is it that two novice directors can juggle through characters in their own respective movies, but someone like Duncan Jones who is also new to big Hollywood movies (and wrote the script) can't?

Consona, was the book you read "rise of the Horde" by Christie Golden? Her "Lord of the Clan" is seriously my all time favourite book based off a video game.

I have not read any WC books, thank you for recommendation!

Hearing fanboys talk about the mythical three hour cut that fixes everything is always hilarious
Haha yeah, that's why some Ridley Scott fans annoy me so much. It's like, I don't care if the extended version of Kingdom of Heaven is good. The version I saw in theaters sucked, and it sure as hell didn't make me want to go watch MORE of it. And that's on the director. If you can't figure out how to make an engaging movie with a runtime that doesn't cause audiences' butts to go numb, then you shouldn't be making big-budget, mainstream films.
IMO, I think you see things a little bit easier than they are. Are you a creative person, an artist? Putting things together is not as easy as you suggest. From time to time, I compose music for some small trailers, etc. It may seem to be the easiest thing to do, you have some flowing pictures before you and you just push some keys on the keyboard, right? Man, sometimes the trailer is cutted is so weird way that no matter what you do, things do not sit together well. Now, when I've tried, I'm much more respectful to all those directors, composers, editors, screenwriters, etc. because I know how even the little things and details can change the whole product, the feeling of the whole product, etc. Sometimes you just need more time to tell the story in much better way. Sometimes not! Surprise, surprise, every piece of art is unique, presents another difficulties, you can write stories for your whole life yet find yourself at a dead end with your newest novel, because you put together some different ideas every time you write something, etc. There's no recipe. And sometimes you need another 30 minutes and some more days is a cutting room...
Maybe you are right, maybe veteran big-budget directors should know how to do it without needs of extended cuts, I'm just trying to bring another perspective into the discussion.

I've seen absolutely nothing to indicate anything like that. Jones looks really happy with the film.
Yea, me neither.

It's all "IMO" territory. One of my internet friends said "theatrical Two Towers is the the worst film of the trilogy, extended Two Towers is the best one"...

Okay, if we are fair theoretically a longer cut can feel "shorter". Namely as it isn't wasting your time, stuff isn't incoherent, etc. But there was nothing in BvS or the F4 that suggest any more time was going to fix things with horrible characterizations and crappy stories.

The best thing about the BvS situation is it came less then a year after we got the same excuse with F4.

The best thing about BvS is that it DIDN'T have an extra half hour attached to it. The human mind can only take so much stupidity before it begins to liquify and leak out of the ears.

Good to see some Khadgar and Llane bromance.

Why do I keep mixing those names up. >___________<

Those two latest reviews - exactly what I'm expecting from the film, BUT I didn't expect people to be that wowed by visuals. Glad that guy mentioned Karazhan - probably the ugliest CGI of recent. Really surprising given how detailed and dare a say photorealistic (as much as fiction characters can be these days) orcs (and majority of other backgrounds) are.

Really can't wait to see all easter eggs layed for gamers. And MAGIC.

Glad people appreciated unique aesthetic of the film. I kinda feel they almost found the right look for this particular universe. It doesn't look like LOTR, it doesn't look like other properties, yet it pays a lot of respect to the source.

Also happy the film is quite dark and dramatic, but not without humor and moments of levity.

I was laughing pretty hard at the comments on that effects guide review summary on the RPG site. There was someone complaining that critics can't be trusted...but their reasoning was that Snow piercer received positive reviews and he thought it was trash. It takes different strokes to move the world but dam. So.e people just don't even deserve good movies.

Anyone that thinks Snowpiercer was trash is on an entirely different wavelength from me so there is really no point even reading their opinion about other films. They probably wouldn't know a good film if it came up and kicked them in the balls.

Again, BvS has taught me a lesson. Don't care about reviews until you see the film yourself.

Yeah, it was a great lesson, even though I didn't trust reviewer much even before that.

Well you said you read about Durotan and stuff, so I assumed you read one of those novelizations. Yeah, Lord of the Clans was one of their first novels and it was based off a cancelled RPG adventure with the same title, set after WC2 but before WC3:

I'm very biased towards Warcraft so I could recommend even more stuff lol easily. Paul Cornell wrote the WC Movie Comic and Christie Golden (Lord of the Clans author) wrote the prequel novelization, very excited for those both.

It is amazing you got that lesson from BvS considering the actual reaction of the general public to it. Namely that the critics were right. Which is the only real concern when it comes to how much money will be made here.

Exactly.

What's your opinion on why people like/love BvS?

Hey Hey, take your Batmans and Supermans and Piercers of Snow away from Warcraft. :p
