EVERYTHING Black Panther - Part 2

It's too bad that we're getting an Ant-Man movie, but BP is nowhere to be seen. Marvel has had a real opportunity to introduce a superhero of African decent in their Avengers movie, and it looks like they will skip on that chance. I doube we'll see Falcon and WM in TA2 either.

I don't think there is a need to be so pessimistic or negative.

I never would have thought that Starlord would be cast before T'Challa

I don't think Marvel are actively skipping BP. Feige said the reason Ant Man is getting made at all is because Wright wants to do it. So if some talented writer/director approached them with good ideas for a BP film I'm sure they'd grab on with both hands.

Exactly.

It's a stroke of good fortune that Edgar Wright wants to make Ant-Man. What more can you ask for? A talented director with a passion for a project. Just the thought of it makes me giddy, you know that combo is going to be all kinds of awesome.

We'll see. If it's any consolation, I doubt Ant-Man will be done anytime this decade.

Marvel seems very intent on doing Ant Man.

Isn't he on their slate already officially?

He is, but with Wright, you know.

If he's going to do Lang I'd rather not have on at all :o

Falcon is definitely going to be in Avengers 2. He's going to be on the new cartoon, which is the movie's cast with Falcon. They're not going to show kids that, have Falcon in the MCU & then NOT have him in the sequel.

Ant-Man is going to happen. Don't know where you got that doubt from, I haven't seen anything so far to point to it not happening.

On another note, I wonder how Sean Nelson would do as T'Challa.

I think the problem this movie is facing kind of the opposite problem Captain America did. Where as Captain America faced the issue of not coming across as a jigonistic, backslapping "America **** yeah!" film in the vein of Battleship and Transformers, Black Panther could potentially alienate Conservative American audiences if they're not careful.

A big part of Black Panther's storylines is that he's at odds with the West, and is 9 times out of 10, justified. That's not the sort of thing that will go over well in the red states, and whenever you make a movie that costs $100-200 M to make, you can't really afford to alienate half of the nation that will make up 1/3rd of your ticket sales.

I think they're trying to find that a-political take on BP equivalent to the relatively a-political take on Cap that popped up the MCU.

I don't know. If Django can make 160 m domestic and almost 400 m worldwide without help from conservatives and red necks then why couldn't a superhero movie, which has a wider appeal then a quasi-Western.

Django also had kind of the luxury to allow pretty much every white actor in it to use the word ******, so it was a give and take.

I don't think the anti-affirmative action crowd was really excited to see a black man shoot down dozens of white people in an anti-slavery revenge fantasy.

Plus almost every white person who used the N-word was promptly shot and killed.

Also look at Avatar, one of the most blatantly liberal blockbusters ever made.

How many war hawks and conservatives hated that movie with a passion.

It still made 2.7 BILLION dollars.

Yeah alienating conservatives will not hurt a movie at the box office.

Marvel will probably side step any of the political stuff from Black Panther like they have done with changing Mandarin, not featuring swastika in Captain America and making Raza's group mercenaries instead of islamic extremists.

I think some of the politics is ingrained into the Black Panther character.

It adds to his contentious and distrustful relationship with the Avengers and explains why he maintains his skeptic, outsider status. The fact that the Avengers' noble heroics change an impassioned isolationist and anti-imperialist into willing team player speaks volumes about both the Avengers and Black Panther himself.

This doesn't suggest that Wakanda's attitude toward foreigners is unwarranted but that the Avengers' heroics go beyond the scope of geopolitics and BP is wise enough to recognize and respect that.

It would be a terrible waste if they neuter Black Panther of his idealized, African self-determination and justified self-reliance. I'd rather they not use him at all is it comes down to that.
