Just found this interview with Mark Millar from 2012 (back before Kinberg was attached), and it seems downright hilarious now:

In his interview with SFX magazine, Twentieth Century Fox creative consultant Mark Millar talked extensively about the upcoming X-Men: Days Of Future Past movie. He also touched lightly on the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot from director Josh Trank.

Earlier this year, Josh Trank stunned Hollywood when his debut feature film Chronicle opened number one at the box office during Super Bowl weekend. Chronicle was shot on only a $15 million budget, and the film won rave reviews for the young filmmaker. One of the rave reviews came from Mark Millar, who called Chronicle his “favorite superhero film of the past year.”

According to Millar, Josh Trank wants to utilize the classic Fantastic Four stories in his reboot, but also do it in his own way. Millar said, “You can tell from Chronicle that it was a new way of looking at superheroes, and I think he’s going to apply that same slightly skewed way of looking at heroes to the Fantastic Four, but do it in a way that feels incredibly reverential to the Kirby and Lee stuff.”

Millar also added that both he and Josh Trank thought that the first 100 issues of Fantastic Four was the best Fantastic Four. Millar said, “You’ve really got to get into the Kirby and Lee stuff to do it properly, to try and get that same sense of wonder.”

Another tidbit dropped by Millar is that Fantastic Four will have its own style which will be different from the tone of other superhero movies. While not revealing exactly what that style will be, Millar said, “I don’t think you could do Fantastic Four and try and make it grim and gritty.”

Man, that is some harsh irony there. And it's interesting that the guy who wrote UFF understood all that more than Kinberg seems too.

I suspect this may have been related to the Miller/Stentz script - which likely would have cost $150 million plus - so they scrapped it and went back to the drawing board and focused on a simpler origin story that would be closer to Chronicle . . . in tone and cost.

Kind of splitting hairs here, but it's worth noting that Chronicle only had a $12 mil budget, while this film is rumored to have a $100 mil budget. That's of course not blockbuster numbers, but it at least puts us at the level of the first Story film, for better or worse.

Dragonball: Evolution was said to have a $100 million budget and it came in far less than that. The studio (which was Fox, oddly enough) lied about it so it looked like they were making on honest effort at a blockbuster film and not a cheapo job just to keep the rights.

Production has officially started I'm psyched

I'm betting we're looking at way lower than $100 million. You don't start production on a $100 million dollar film without anyone noticing.

I'm going to say that one of these two things are true:

1. Production has started and this will be a very low-profile, low-budget film.

2. Production has not yet started and therefore Kinberg's comments were BS . . . and if Kinberg's comments were BS, all bets are off.

So wat do we think they will do if this bombs?

I think Disney/Marvel will threaten/cajole/bargain with FOX to keep them from holding the Four hostage for another seven years. They will eventually settle on some minor compensation - perhaps a mid credit teaser for XM:A at the end of Cap 3?

Or 3. Production has started, the budget is still the same, and they just haven't filmed anything major yet and/or are afraid of fan backlash if they don't show something impressive.

But if you're shooting a $100 million dollar film, even if you haven't filmed any big scenes yet, there is unavoidable evidence of such a major film happening. Where are the casting calls for extras? Where are announcements for scheduled road closures? Where are the tweets from the 1000's of crew members saying: "Setting up lights and measuring illumination levels for the Fantastic Four film."? etc. etc. etc.

Miles Teller tweets about his bowel movements. I'd expect something from him if filming is actually starting.

I tell you it's going to be filmed Bowfinger style.

it depends what you consider production, really as soon as you start making props, set designs, custom designs, you could be consider in production... it doesn't have to mean already shooting scenes and hiring extras

Sit on it for another seven years.

Ding, ding, ding-----winner

No, what you described is PRE-production.....they have a deadline to do actual filming...not endlessly bide their time by designing costumes and props.

I think I'll be tweeting that the day this is released. "Just took a thunderous dump, a real pan cracker and potential hazard to the shipping lanes. Nearly as big a turd as that new FFINO flick Pixar are happily trouncing".:cwink:

They reportedly starting with filming in the 'Celtic Media Centre' in Baton Rouge a couple of days ago. I think that's a studio lot so no surprise there's no onlookers posting spied camera shots/fliming clips etc.

Presumably they will be leaving that lot to shoot on an actual location at some point so we should get something then.

There could be any number of reasons why we haven't heard much. It's a lower-tier comic book property (in terms of GA awareness), a production without any major stars that's been getting nothing but bad WoM for months now...I have a hard time believing people are interested enough to be taking spy photos of the set or tweeting about being involved.

And even if they were, there's probably not much to see just yet. If I've interpreted my rumors right, they might just be shooting scenes of Reed Richards' childhood, so it's not like there's any big action scenes or recognizable costumes to get peoples attention.

Dude share the time machine! How did you get that tweet from a month from now? Of course it was one of those celebrity tweets that they quickly try to delete but history showed it was too late and Trank never forgave him. Jordan told him that he had alienated all those fans who hate this version but would break down and watch it anyway.

They were kind of a big deal. . . before Fox got their hands on them.

And as for Fox's reluctance to talk about them, when are they going to start? Will this film come and go with Fox pretending it never existed? If Fox is so embarrassed about them and unwilling to treat the property with the respect it deserves, they should give it to someone who will.

I'm not surprised Fox is keeping things hush-hush. They clearly don't want to do this film. They just don't want Marvel to get the rights back.

Perhaps our beloved cast is over in Europe as we speak, filming surreptitiously during the Avengers production?

"Look out, that Ultron-like creature is in actuality a Doombot! Let's shoot at them with our dark and gritty machine guns. We totally have powers even though they were temporarily taken away by a Doom device of some sort. Go read the comics, nerd. Pew! Pew! Pew!"

"Oh no, it's Marvel Studios Securi.....Doom's minions! Coming to throw us out of Latveria! Pew! Pew! Pew!"

Found these pics of Bell, Jordan, Teller and Mara in a supermarket (taken a week ago?) and at a restaurant (24th April) in Baton Rouge courtesy of Enid Fong and Team Mi Tell.
