Why do people hate the Story films so much? I really don't think they are nearly as bad as people say. Even Alba was decent, despite being terribly miscast. And the other 3 leads did great.

The only real issue is with the treatment of the villains. And even then, the worst by a VERY large margin is Galactus. Whereas, Surfer was handled well, and Doom was half way decent.

Agreed,I never quite got the hate.I'd have been happy with a 3rd Story film.

I think it was the way he was written, because in virtually everything else he's in, he's more like Reed Richards than in those Fantastic Four movies - whether it's the leadership side, the intelligence side etc.

Ioan Gruffudd said he played the character how it was written in the script. If his Reed was better written then he would of done fine.

I don't hate them, but they're not all they could be. They already seem a lot better than this Trank FFINO. The Story films even had far more publicity and promotion than this.

I always did agree that Alba was miscast, even though she is hot. Even back then though, they didn't get as many big actors as they did for the X-Men franchise, showing that Fox have never placed as much value on FF as X-Men. The FF were mostly TV actors at the time, apart from Chris Evans. They could've had someone like Charlize Theron as Sue back when she was young enough.

I don't think many fans "hate" the Story films its just that they missed out on so much potential. And some of the most important elements they took liberty on is what pissed off lots of fans. If you miss the heart of what made these characters special then you already failed.

Personally I find them entertaining particularly the first film because it focused primarily on the origin of the heroes. There are some films that I loathe like Superman Returns and its not entertaining at all to me because its about as far from character as you can go.

Doom absolutely ruins both those films for me. And he is as important to the mythos as the team itself.

They're pretty bad.

I think you can argue that there are some decent aspects but outside of Johnny and Ben except for his look, this ranks near the bottom of CBMs.

There's a lot of things to not like about the Story films, including the attempts at humor that don't work, the Reed-Sue-Victor "love" triangle,
Doom's powers tied into the team origin and the underwhelming special effects.

The key problem, to me, is how weak the team is depicted onscreen. Though each one of the five combatants are equally powered, it takes all four members of the FF to take out a Doom without Doombots, powered armor, or a booby trapped Latverian castle to aid him. And the team simply decides (except for Johnny) to sit out the confrontation with Galactus. Compare them to the similarly powered Incredibles and Story's FF are pathetic.

Yeah, they are slightly above Ghost Rider, Catwoman, Steel, and Elektra....slightly.

Yeah, they are slightly above Ghost Rider, Catwoman, Steel, and Elektra....slightly.

Wow...... I just don't agree with this. They are FAAAR better than the films you just listed.

Could they be better? Certaintly. But the are far from terrible.

People treat those films like they were made by freakin Uwe Boll.

Yeah....that's kind of extreme. I would never put the FF films in the category with any of those.

And it looks like people will be treating those FF movies as great superhero films due to this new one that's coming out. But hey, it happens.

In terms of CBMs, Catwoman, GL, Steel etc. are the worst.

But if we are just trying to put lipstick on a pig and say Story's FF movies are like some middle of the road CBMs that is giving them way too much credit and praise. At best I put it between average and those bottom tier CBMs.

The first one is decent, outside of Doom's...everything. And that's being generous.

The second one is just not good at all.

That's why Trank will be hailed as a genius film maker for making the Story films look so good.

I cracked up at "putting lipstick on a pig". That's gold.
Yeah, both FF movies were pretty bad. They may not be at the very bottom end of the spectrum, but they're pretty close.

SHM, apparently it's already started.

But saying its not as bad as Elektra or Catwoman is no excuse for it.

Crap is still crap regardless of the degree.

Depicting several people with superhuman abilities fighting onscreen seems to be really difficult.

In some ways, we fans, read comics and animation with the ability to basically cut loose in a single panel or animated frames for granted. In live action, fighting a Sentinel would never amount to what it did in the 90s animated series.

It's just the mentality these days to have everything categorized as "genius filmaking" or "an affront to humanity". Neither describes the Story films. In fairness, the first Story film had about as many "pluses" as "minuses" making it more than watchable,(the cast being generally good all around) despite some obvious missteps ( particularly regarding Doom.)

LOL........I mean some of y'all actually put FF slightly above Steel?

Steel?

Cmon now.....that's just cruel. FF is bad but damn.........Steel? LOL

But Trank's movie IS genius film making if it can actually make all previous movie versions of the FF look good.

It's difficult, but it's been done well onscreen. The Avengers battle montage in which we follow Tony through the battle. The Incredibles teaming up with Frozone against the Omnidroid. The New Mutants battling the Sentinels. Of course you've got to commit the requisite resources to make it happen, and FOX would never do it with a "lesser" property like the FF.

It was obvious in the Story films they didn't know how to write a climatic scene that involved all four using their powers together. In the first one, they took out a fire hydrant, and in the second one, they just gave all the powers to Johnny.

It's like the original X-men movies where they don't know what to do with Professor X after the first act so they find a way to incapacitate him.

Or the second X-Men movie, where they found a way to incapacitate him. Or the third one, where they also found a way to incapacitate him. Props to Days of Future Past, though. That one flipped the whole thing on its head by incapacitating him FIRST, and then having him get his powers back. :o

Exactly.
